Good evening. My wife and me are now on holiday on the Isle of Arran. We are from Dortmund, Germany. Thank you for your videos. We watch them every time. Arran is so fabulous. Stay safe. Bye.

My grandmother used left over oatmeal from breakfast and formed them by hand into patties and fried them in butter

THis is the first I've heard of cheese oatcakes. I'm going to try them with my next bowl of tomato soup. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this recipe, since Brexit it’s been impossible to get hold of oatcakes and I’ve been planning to make my own. You’ve given me the inspiration.

Made these 3 times now, I adore them!
Yet to find the really fine oats in NE U.K. I even went to Glasgow to buy the correct oats. OMG how wonderful are these!
I’ve been eating them with boiled egg and avocado and basically substituting them for bread ❤

They're just braw. I love cheese oatcakes. Give me plate of proper stovies with pickled beetroot & a side plate of cheese oatcakes & I'm a happy man. Or for a quick snack some cheese oatcakes, slathered in butter & some rollmop herrings! Yum.😋
Cheers for making my Friday with happy food thoughts.

Am I the only person who tries to join in with Cheryl's "well hello there folks" at the beginning of each video? I reckon I get it spot on 95% of the time, but I don't do the accent because I can't.

I wonder where I might find the right kind of oats in Texas. Perhaps l can grind some steel cut oats. Other than steel cut, all we have is rolled oats.

I always thought that was the way they were meant to be cooked. I’m just about to watch Cheryl’s video but thought I’d check the comments first lol.

  • @dorothyrushforth888

I think I’m about to embarrass myself here! I’ve wanted to make oatcakes for many many years but was never sure what type of oats to buy. I can’t quite see what they are like in the video (my eyesights fault). Are they like rolled oats that have been cut finer or is it pinhead oatmeal cut fine?
I can get Scott’s Porridge Oats or ‘own brand’ porridge oats but I’ve not seen this brand.
Shame on me being Scottish and not knowing. 😖

Sitting here in Australia where that is NOT a gluten free recipe. A protein in Oats called Avenin, also known as glutens cousin (it might be a prolamin actually, but don't quote me) mimics gluten in most Coelaics, not to mention only organic and steel cut oats are not contaminated with wheat during harvest or transport.
Due to this, the labelling on this video (while an innocent mistake) could actually be quite harmful to someone in Aus who is newly diagnosed and doesn't know any better. It is technically dangerous to ALL Coeliacs who haven't done an Oat challenge, but that is the rule here, and there is a reason our Coeliacs have some of the best outcomes (here, to be gluten free something has to be under 3ppm of gluten, compared to the 20ppm of the US, meaning most US Coeliacs are ingesting small amounts of gluten).
Another thing we teach new Coeliacs here is BROWN= Barley, Rye, Oats, Wheat = No
Due to this, it would be wonderful if you could either label your videos differently or add a disclaimer that this is only gluten free in some parts of the world and to clarify if Oats are deemed "gluten free" and Coeliac safe in that person's locality before ingesting.
I am not doing this to pick at you, but I don't want you getting in trouble because you unintentionally gave some advice that isn't universal, there are lots of Karen's out there. I recently had an Australian website have to change and review all their recipes for this reason.
You are welcome to verify this also, if you wish, I have worked as a GF Ambassador for a few websites and am certain this is all still relevant, but feel free. Only good intentions with this post.
For overseas Coeliacs who want safer oats - get steel cut from a health food store because they won't be wheat contaminated and bear in mind a small amount of Coeliacs can tolerate avenin, but most will get equally sick and have the same damage gluten causes, which is why we have to do a special challenge in Au to ensure its safety.
Otherwise great video, thank you for sharing.
Also had to edit because I could listen to you talk all day!

Be careful! Most oats are NOT gluten free. You have to check, and usually buy from the free from section, particularly if you have Coeliac Disease.
