Learning how to incorporate little extra hi hat stuff like this into grooves has taken all the straightforward beats I've been playing and made them so much more interesting. Good stuff, Gabe!!
Aside from the already great information he gives in his videos about drumming, I like the editing, clever camera tricks and the graphics used in the videos. Great work! 👍👍
I’ve been playing drums for about 40 years. I’ve done that in the past without thinking about it, just to add something. Great someone coined it in a lesson!
Dude...this gotta be the most comprehensive drum lesson I've ever seen. You explained it well. And you were so kind to put the tempo & notes on screen, making my practice much easier🤘👊
I feel as though I'm in high-school band class. 51 years and now as a church drummer, any and everything extra helps. Gospels a hard task master at times with deep soulful critics🤣. Ill use this again since I hadn't thought about it in years...THANKS! 🙏
I Learned this technique In 1971/72from FRED GRUBER when I was taking lessons from him He used the Frank Higgins 92 rock ‘n’ roll Beats book and had me doing this, something very similar to this I still use this technique to this day this is a great video this technique really works it’s been around a while but it really works! There’s also some Great high hat techniques In the Gene Krupa book Using Sticks!
I have utilized this technique before but I use it more when I am on my ride cymbal and throwing the "flick" gives it a more noticeable nuance. Even better if you can do the "flick" as an open hat followed by a close with the left foot.
thank you for that...I haven't played for the past 3 years and just had to go down to the kit and try it. makes much more sense than the way I had done it all my life!
Always another great video. Keep up the great work. Very informative, and helpful. Make sure you all get on the waiting list everyone. Gabe is an amazing teacher. You can not go wrong. This is my 2nd year in the Academy, and I love it. Make sure you also get Gabes signature sticks. They feel great in the hands.
Tour tutorials and ideas fit SOOOOO MUCH into what and how I want to olay.. I'm gonna buy your lessons when I get paid on the 11th man. Mint ! Cheers from Poland
Been doing this for years, it just felt natural for me to do, I've never took classes or anything, self taught, I don't even remember when I started playing because I was so young I've just always known how to play drums and have always had drums lol
Thank you for yor great effort. I'm always wondering why people try to find random names for all of their stuff. Flick trick...WOW. I think the main problem is the standard drum setup we are using and we are so caught up in building it up again and again. Unfortunately, this is also determined by the music market. But please all try it once and place the hihat relatively low and directly in front of you (i.e. behind the snare drum). Of course, you can't open the hihat while playing (unless you have a cable hihat or some other shaft). It's not only a kind of open-handed playing, but much more, because you can use both hands equally!
Hi! Just tried it but for me in my position of the hihat it is actually more simple to get a hit in the normal way. The flick makes me crahing my sticks together 😂
Thank you for this Gabe. What should I do if I’m left handed playing on a kit setup for right people?(I actually play with open hands, not crossing my hands)
Nice tutorial! This channel is my go-to because it feels like home. I would like to ask regarding Double + Flick, I noticed that I am almost always doing this because the sound really looks sick. However I am doing it in a fast RLR instead of RRL. Is there any advantage for double stroke instead of what I am doing (RLR) so that I can be inspired to do doubles? Still a beginner here. I'm still mastering single stroke before I jump on to double strokes.
When I first started playing drums I was playing a groove and I messed up and my left hand hit the hi hat and I thought it sounded cool so I found out about this trick by accident .😅😊
My hi hats are about medium height I'd say. But this can definitely work with higher hi-hats as well! You'd just have to lift the left hand a little more.
We use something called a "hair light" that separates me from the background. I think having direct white light on my hair is giving it that effect 🙃 Thankfully there's not that much grey in my hair (yet!)

Hail for DaVinci Resolve!
Nicely done😊

It’s cool that you’re sharing this…I’ve been playing that for many years…I do the same on the ride cymbal and crash cymbals 👍
Never really thought about it. Way cooler than just straight doubles on a hi hat.
Gonna try it for sure!
Heck yes!
I already knew the flick trick but thanks for posting
Could you make a video on how to set up drum mics for studio purposes and live performances?
Potentially!
Yes, I'd love that!

Hi hat flares and tricks are so fun
I totally agree!
This just helped me in fast grooves, fills and in beats
I was literally learning the flick trick in dbo academy when this notification came from TH-cam 😁😊🥁🥁
That amazing Sivam! We love having you in DBO Academy!!

I just heard about this from an old Larnell Lewis Drumeo video. Sick technique, thanks for explaining it!
You bet!
The HiHat is quite the essential to drumming, just as the entire kit is! Awesome work man!
I totally agree! One of my favorite parts of the kit for sure!
@@DrumBeatsOnline Mine too!

I just love your drumming
Hi Hat is the most underrated part of a drum kit.
I hear that!

at first i was like oh yes a flick, alg, then the beats he made using it were actually sick.
Niiiiceee 😌😌😌 am learning
🤘🤘🤘
Been a minute...but its always a good day when Gabe posts
Haha heck yeah Easton
Used this alot in the 90's its back again! 😄
Thanks man. This was helpful and a great opportunity for us to add something new and spiced. Great job!
INTERESTING!!
Good god. That's game-changning.

Amazing! So glad you liked it so much!
@@DrumBeatsOnline I just love to see vids about hi-hat and cymbals tricks
Double + flick feels very trappy! Nice!
Super video!

Great stuff
Awesome video bud.
Hi! Just tried it but for me in my position of the hihat it is actually more simple to get a hit in the normal way. The flick makes me crahing my sticks together 😂
Very good
🙏🏽🙏🏽
That's fantastic
Yo that’d be cool if you could add a bit of drum history on those, so we have a bit of context of where it comes from. Just to dg deeper etc.
Any gospel/r&b drummer e.g. ladell abrams, Marvin McQuitty, Calvin Rodgers etc
Nice 👍
Hey thanks!
Hey my remo black dot coated did the same thing... The dot chips and sticky flakes can be really hard to get out of your drum after.
Can you do a kickflip with the highhat?
would love to know what mics you're using on the kit, they sound great.
Gospel has been incorporating this for ages.
Right. I've been playing this way since i seen Ladell Abrams play in the 90's
I like using this trick for when I want to play 16th note partials on the hats but for 8th note I just use my foot instead
Thank you for this Gabe.
What should I do if I’m left handed playing on a kit setup for right people?(I actually play with open hands, not crossing my hands)
you can still flick the snare stick to the high hat.
Cool.... Just a quick question did you plan on using these patterns in your examples in halftime because the snare accent (backbeat) is on beat 3.
Tks
I actually do that sometimes lol that’s good to know it’s ok
Great video🤍✅
Aside from this hi hat which i learn alot from,
How can i have a strong hand when playing the drums?💔
It's is awesome bro
I love to play drums but I don't have it because of my family situation I saw all the videos of you bro it is very useful. 😅😁😁
What if you are a left handed drummer and or play open handed on a right handed set up drum set. Will that trick still work?
🌺Super
❤️❤️
So simple but so effective, time to rewrite all my songs lol

Awesome, this is great! I will be applying to my playing.
What is the name of the tune you have playing in the intro, it's sweet!?
How to learn solem version?
Interesting Gabe. I heard this resource in fhe song "I found you" from L.A. Guns. Am I right?
q Series Zultan Great Work Thank you
Beginners will appreciate
Can you name what cymbals you're using please
At 2:39, I have felt that. I have raged so much just by not knowing where to go.
Looks clumsy but I’ll give it a go. Being a lefty I use open on a right handed kit. I might even be doing the flick already
Much easier if you take the plunge and start playing open handed. No hand crossing required so easy to move hand from snare to hats.
Thank you G.!(+++)
This is That much easier when you play open handed. Switched to left hand lead as a righty years back and the "flick" is then sans stick smack.
Clearly showed the hi-hat technique
Wow
So that’s how Stewart Copeland does that trick!
When I first started playing drums I was playing a groove and I messed up and my left hand hit the hi hat and I thought it sounded cool so I found out about this trick by accident .😅😊
Haha that's awesome!
I also figured it out on my own. nice to see it officially sanctioned.
I use the flick all the time
Hi sir i am from Philippines do you have an extra Drum set.i want tO be a Good Drumers but i dont have any Budget to buy
❤❤❤
Carter Beauford is the god of this! Don’t know if that’s how you spell his name but…. Dave matthews!
Y do you have more and more cymbals on the rack bro 😳?
The Meinl-Lisa doesn't let me play them all at the same time 😅
Tony royster been doing this since he was like 6 lol.
You can only really do this if your hats are low
My hi hats are about medium height I'd say. But this can definitely work with higher hi-hats as well! You'd just have to lift the left hand a little more.
left handed drummer on a right hand setup does this naturally.
nice stuff...but I find the metronome is too loud on the track - it overwhelms the hi-hat sound.
These exercises automatically take me to Carter Beauford and Mike Portnoy...
Why do drummer uses different types of sticks while playing drums?
This is some really good stuff but I speak English....the subtitles are very distracting. Thanks!
😲
Mate whats going on with your hair ? looks like you got some undercoat ( grey ) sprayed in it. :)
We use something called a "hair light" that separates me from the background. I think having direct white light on my hair is giving it that effect 🙃 Thankfully there's not that much grey in my hair (yet!)
@@DrumBeatsOnline Your only a young fella bit early for the grey stuff. I thought all the touring and partying may have aged you.
Its already been done by a 15year old Filipina but much.better 3years ago by a song "weak"... I dont know the exact date or year she did it
Um Did you forget the drum objects of 2021😕?
Can't you give me two high hat lids sir I am in Sri Lanka
no click bait pls
