I'm not a Beckett fanboy, but I do have a problem with loosing Beckett, competition will always help us as the consumer. One less player in grading will hurt us. Heck, i don't think i even had a single card in a Beckett holder, I'll have to change that.
The company I've been most impressed with is CGC. I think their growth is a significant reason Beckett is in decline. On a customer service standpoint, they are excellent.
I got into cards after comics and was amazing when you grade or crossover I’ve never once gotten grader notes to explain why a card got a grade…..and Beckett is inconsistent in my opinion….CGC was great w comics maybe need to try them with cards
Definitely agree. Hope beckett stays around. And really they should. 34k sucks for them, but they still made over 1MM last month. Personally I want my pc cards graded. And I just sent 18 of my best cards to bgs for under $300 with their 25% off special. It would have cost me over $2,000 to send to psa. That's a huge savings on cards that I just want to display nicely.
I favor the BGS grading system. To much variation between PSA 9s and 10s. Some 10s look like 9s some 9s look like 10s. The hobby has given PSA way to much power. Long live BGS!
It’s all hogwash anyway, psa slaps 10s on cards with easily visible flaws, I’ve seen hundreds. And will slap an 8 or 9 on a perfect card if they’re pop controlling it
Becketts advantage was their authentication slabbing but they haven’t run specials like they use to. I’m just not grading currently. PSA is expensive and inconsistent.
Beckett is nostalgic for me collecting from the 80s never going anywhere without my price guide. My entire PC is in BGS slabs. I think they are the luxury slab and I love the subgrades. PSA baffles me with their extreme upcharge for cheap plastic slabs that allow the card to move potentially getting damaged and labels that look like dated library index cards. I hate their business model and their being #1 baffles me. I so hope a collector is able to take over the business, someone who love the hobby and understands it.
I'm still subbing with Beckett, for the subgrades and solid slabs. Haven't heard not one card being affected while in a Beckett slab like cards in PSA slabs,...moving around, cards fading, easy to crack, etc. I think the hobby has been hard on Beckett but hopefully that changes.
I actually love BGS 9.5s… can save a lot of money when buying, looks awesome with gold label, and highly reputable grade on par with PSA 10. Plus ready for future crossover OR BGS scale update to 10.
Beckett has MUCH better information on parallels, print runs: pack odds etc from pre panini era than tcbd or cardboard connection, etc. That’s what they’re good for now, researching those cards from the tricky 1994-2010 era
Beckett and the Beckett slabs shouldn't suffer because of a parent company owner. Unless proven that he had actual interference in the grading process, Thier slabs should still hold the value regardless. Even if Beckett dies off for whatever reason or any of the top grading companies the slabs should still hold the value of the grade. *but we all know regardless of the company, we all have a few cards that were graded by someone blind and drunk*
The hype machine/IG made it seem to newbies that PSA 10s are somehow better than 9.5s....this is especially troubling for true BGS gems or higher. Looks aside which is collector specific, the slab and 'grader notes' on the BGS label are superior. Wake up... PSA is making you pay for grader notes, but BGS already gives them to you for free lol. I would just hold BGS stuff if you already paid for it. The disparity between a PSA 10 and BGS 9.5 is a clear bull exploit. The astute collector and investor realize this.
Just bought a bgs 9.5 Marcelo Mayer 1st bowman black refractor auto /76 for around 550. Insane price compared to the last PSA 10 that sold for almost 4k
This card entered is categorized as "vintage" (This is taken from the Beckett site) Cards 1981 or older ... NO SUB GRADES but you pay for Sub Grades ! Beckett only assigns an overall grade to vintage era cards. This is primarily due to the production quality of vintage era cards and the overall aesthetic of the card being the main focus. Additionally, cards deemed as "vintage" are not eligible for the Base Without Subgrades service due to the meticulous grading process required for these cards. Despite not receiving subgrades, all vintage era cards must be submitted using a "With Subgrades" service.
This is real interesting to me. As someone who's been in the game for a long time, but hasn't exactly followed any news about grading companies, this is surprising. My gut reaction is that I'm still completely fine with ordering cards in Beckett slabs, because in pricing, I've still seen a price structure at the tip top where BGS 10 > PSA 10 > BGS 9.5 > PSA 9. But... I think if any of my 9.5's have those 10 subgrades and I give them a close look, it's probably worth sending over to PSA to be regraded. Then again, I thought that already before I knew about this stuff. I found this video because interesting enough, I sent a message to FANATICS COLLECT recently about a card I had sent to Beckett to be graded months ago. And I was told that it looks like the delay is because they are currently undergoing an acquisition that might be slowing things down. We'll see what happens there.
I already cracked my cards out of BGS slabs months ago, as their values just continued to plummet and cross them to PSA. I also look for Beckett slabs to buy cheap then crack them and send those off to PSA. Either way I don’t want to touch Beckett for anything.
Im just coming to slabbing, and i love BGS cus they put their cards in sleeves before the slab. If its in PSA your damaging your cards 100%, ehich is a fundamental design flaw i cant ever get over.
I've recently received a card w/ 9.0 surface ... I've checked it out under good lighting, and everything looks perfect. I believe whoever did the grading at Beckett got lazy and just eye-balled it after he/she re-sleeved it using sub-par penny sleeve ... there are several small scuffs, dust specs, and even a small warp spot, all from the penny sleeve. It's easy to see as you rotate the slab around different angles that the scuff/debris are not from the card itself but from the penny sleeve. (you can also tap the slab on the edges so the card moves a little bit, to see whether the scuff/debris are actually on the card or sleeve.) This makes me question the standards and how the card was graded at Beckett. I myself work in a clean room at a tissue bank with a good air filtration system that removes all the dust in the air ... so I would expect the card grading service to be under such a environment (and using better penny sleeves) ... or was I wrong? did the card grader took the cards home to "catch up" on the grading? was the grading process outsourced? (Unlike other grading services, they don't even archive an image of the card for you to look at) cert# is 0017493126 Based on this experience, I have very little trust in submitting anything to Beckett.
I can't speak for everyone but I've personally enjoy subgrades. However, I do not like how thick their slabs are. You can at least expect a level of transparency with subgrades. Beckett is worth keeping around but I don't know at what price. I think there are a lot of graders that have worked for Beckett for long enough that they're people are at least worth the money for someone to buy and keep going. Certainly the best graders should stay and the rest we'll have to go until the company restructures to a profitable model
It would be too bad if Beckett as a company just went away. They've got a rich and historic history. I'm not a fan of monopolies of any kind, even in the hobby, and even if doesn't affect me directly. The more card manufacturers there are the more competition and innovation you'll get. Anyway, I think that the owner's legal issues are separate from Beckett, but its such a mismanaged company. My concern is that the hobby - or perhaps more appropriately, card manufacturers are such a niche industry that the pool of potential experts is really small and everyone knows each other. And that's not great either. I'd like someone with longstanding experience in media and with the hobby take over Beckett - I'd buy them if I had financial backing, but I'd probably get out of grading.
I like the Beckett subgrades. I like the slabs sometimes, but for a larger collection they're a little bulky. PSA has done a nice job with the QR codes on their slabs linking right up to the website and pop report.
I don't believe that BGS scans the cards that they slab. You need to be able to see scans to see if you are being scammed or not. You should be able to go online and see scans of all the graded copies of a card to see if a card has been cleaned, trimmed, etc. between grading attempts or whether a raw card was previously graded. You can't do all this with CGC, SGC, and PSA, but at least you can see a scan where you have the certification number.
The only benefit of grading is the authenticity element. No one is putting their high end cards in screw downs or binders anymore. Pretty much every modern card will grade an 8 or above so it’s just pointless to put such a premium on a psa 10 when it’s so subjective
It does not matter for rare and vintage collectors on low pop low numbered ssp stuff it's more about the card. If people want to use the excuse of beckett having issues to devalue cards fine but I'll tell people to shove it on lowball offers because of a slab sorry george my mj /50 in a beckett 9 is still a /50 jordan lol who gives a fuck what slab it's in it's more about the market and big money wanting control of bigger cards. Dealers and channel people like you do this every single year and it gets old I'm going to hold while the market is in termoil until trump get sworn in and then release when the market is high in March and people are flush with tax dollars and most likely around march 15th payday for most people
Beckett needs a rebrand. Starting with the font of their name. Then move to electronic submissions when at card shows. These people still fill out paper forms in triplicate. But this all has to start at the top. So we need to start first with new leadership that can implement fresh ideas and a reinvestment into their brand!
My first 50 cards were all BGS...my next 700 cards were PSA and some SGC. The BGS website was so poor and I had no idea where my cards were but I do miss the sub grades.
Sorry for the hate, but the Pokemon card craze is starting to have a negative effect on the hobby. 90% of the monthly cgc graded cards are most likely tcg cards. My local Gamestop has become a tcg card shop and is now an authorized PSA dealer (which won't last long). it cost you less to submit through gamestop than sending them to PSA even as a PSA member(with shipping). This will end quickly when people really start using this service and gamestop realizes you can't ship 100 psa graded cards(max 100 cards per order) for 5.99 , in reality PSA charges about 44. to ship and insure 10 slabs. I'm calling PSA out too, I personally think they are grading these tcg cards alot looser than they grade sports cards. Just look at a Pokemon card every Pokemon card is an extremely tough to grade card yet they have a high Gem rate. Another thing pokemon has created a bunch 12 yr old thieves running around the shows. For the hobby's sake I really hope this TCG card craze ends quickly.
I’d be okay with Beckett going if PSA would stop putting wrong size border around cards where the card moves inside and giving obviously off centered cards 10. They legitimately suck at what they do just as bad as any of the other big names
Love bgs slabs but guess ill have to hold my collection and see what happens to this company. May go with cgc cause psa isnt accurate. I think TAG may see a rise in the future as well. They may turn the tables and be the next big contenders
IMO there is zero reason to grade with BGS. Personally I’m looking at PSA and CGC. Both grading guarantee both gem mint 10 both better looking slabs especially cgc the best looking slab on the market now and no subgrades. People don’t want confusion so to speak 10 is higher than 9.5. Min Gem or quad gem or true gem or true gem plus or true gem plus plus. It’s too much. Psa is now grading/card insurance king, cgc is growing rapidly in only 3-4 years and Bgs has truly become Nokia.
Beckett has done everything they could to destroy their company including sticking with clunky no tech outdated slabs, expensive non-competitive pricing for lower end, really slow grading times, high shipping costs, outdated submission process etc. it’s almost as if the US government is running Beckett.
What benefit would there be for Collectors to buy Beckett though? Their grading numbers are not worth the amount of money and effort they would have to put in to reviving the brand, unless they get it for pennies on the dollar.
It’s a shame, because I like the BGS slabs. I think they have the heftiest, most solid slab, they have subgrades as you said. But I also like uniformity in my collection. The only slabs in my collection are PSA slabs, not because I think their grading is the best or most honest, but I just like the look of their label, I like that I can clearly read the player name, set name etc, and I like uniformity. I wouldn’t enjoy having mostly PSA slabs but then a handful of SGC slabs and one BGS slab.
100%. I’m doing that. Getting PSA 10 quality at a huge discount, then ready for a crossover to PSA or in the event BGS updates their scale to 10 and high 9.5s get bumped up.
Yeah definitely is to an extent. So many scams happening alongside grading companies. PoP control…x amount of tens per order …. Consigners getting higher grades ….CT scanning …possible swapping of cards within grading companies ….list goes on

What you said there about PSA is exactly my thoughts. Especially the labels. They just look horrendous.
I'm relatively new to stabbing, but BGS is my favorite and will use them for high ticket items. Biggest pro is that they sleeve their cards.

Thier explanation or wording for grading vintage cards is stupid. Get rid of all that dumb shit and just make a "Vintage" submission selection. 🤦♂
Growing up with Beckett as the price guide to go to it’s strange in general that PSA is more valued.

Beckett's comic book grading (CBCS) seems to be thriving. I'm not a fan of their card grading, but I have had comics graded with them.
I already cracked my cards out of BGS slabs months ago, as their values just continued to plummet and cross them to PSA. I also look for Beckett slabs to buy cheap then crack them and send those off to PSA. Either way I don’t want to touch Beckett for anything.

It’s sad that grading has become more about a label and slab design rather than the actual condition of the card.
The only benefit of grading is the authenticity element. No one is putting their high end cards in screw downs or binders anymore. Pretty much every modern card will grade an 8 or above so it’s just pointless to put such a premium on a psa 10 when it’s so subjective
You can tell PSA thought thier biggest competitor was SGC because thats who they bought
I love Golden Card Grading Co because you can't grade a friggin card but so good and Goldens Micro grading is as good as it gets!!

CGC graded 12K more sports cards than Beckett. That is just crazy to think about.

i hear of alot of lost packages with bgs
Sorry for the hate, but the Pokemon card craze is starting to have a negative effect on the hobby. 90% of the monthly cgc graded cards are most likely tcg cards.
Cgc is very heavy on tcg i would guess that 80% or more is non sports
IMO there is zero reason to grade with BGS. Personally I’m looking at PSA and CGC. Both grading guarantee both gem mint 10 both better looking slabs especially cgc the best looking slab on the market now and no subgrades. People don’t want confusion so to speak 10 is higher than 9.5. Min Gem or quad gem or true gem or true gem plus or true gem plus plus. It’s too much. Psa is now grading/card insurance king, cgc is growing rapidly in only 3-4 years and Bgs has truly become Nokia.
Checking out the MJ rookie card poster.
Very cool!
Appreciate it!
the move is to BUY BGS 9.5s
Personally I think people put to much faith in ALL grading companies in general.
Beckett has done everything they could to destroy their company including sticking with clunky no tech outdated slabs, expensive non-competitive pricing for lower end, really slow grading times, high shipping costs, outdated submission process etc. it’s almost as if the US government is running Beckett.
I have been taking advantage of the bgs arbitrage game since 2021. Buy the card not the slab.
Dr Beckett can't be happy what has happened to his brand name, pretty sad 😞 tbh
What benefit would there be for Collectors to buy Beckett though? Their grading numbers are not worth the amount of money and effort they would have to put in to reviving the brand, unless they get it for pennies on the dollar.
Pretty much exactly what you said, because they would most likely be buying a distressed asset at a discount
if Collectors buy BGS and watch prices to grade at PSA double.
Hey, at least your Saints are one up on the Jets and "The Great" Aaron Rodgers!!! 😆
Buying good bgs 9.5s is a genius move.
100%. I’m doing that. Getting PSA 10 quality at a huge discount, then ready for a crossover to PSA or in the event BGS updates their scale to 10 and high 9.5s get bumped up.
What’s up SCD
Morning!!
Who dat?
PSA is going to acquire BGS
I’m not a Beckett fanboy because GRADING IS A SCAM!!!!!!!
Yeah definitely is to an extent. So many scams happening alongside grading companies. PoP control…x amount of tens per order …. Consigners getting higher grades ….CT scanning …possible swapping of cards within grading companies ….list goes on
For modern, totally agree. When the only grade a card can really get is a psa 8 or above, what’s the point?
Snowflakes grading modern during covid boom created grading into a scam.
Why do all the people who have commented on this video have such atrocious grammar?
I dunno good kwestion
Becuz are edjewkashion sisdum iz shit!
I will gladly take any BGS slabs anyone wants to send me!!! 😊
:)

More like sports card is in trouble. Sports cards suck=)
What would happen if TAG took over the #4 spot in the grading world
