    Seems pretty clear this team is going to have 1-2 more years before their window to win starts to close. Draisaitl's extension is going to be VERY pricey, same for Bouchard's. And then in 2026 they're going to have to be prepared to pay McDavid about $15mil... It's going to be quite hard to build a deep roster with McDavid making ~$15m, Draisaitl making $12-13m, and Bouchard making ~$10m.... And then there's the Nurse contract.

    Future cap outlook for the Oilers is abysmal. Already over the cap and we're talking about giving McDavid a "huge raise," then of course you're setting a very high bar for Draisaitl. You have Holloway and Broberg as RFA's. Of course, Evan Bouchard is going to need a crazy Canadian-level contract...because players obviously aren't considered good by Canadian standards unless they make over $9m. The hope lies in Kane being too unwell to play...or trading an injured Kane after next February to a team on his list? Or maybe do a Vegas and keep him on LTIR until the playoffs? Additionally, Oilers are paying a goalie tandem $3.6m, which awesome, but maybe not sustainable. I haven't looked at their prospect pool, but haven't heard there is anything with a lot of upside there, other than maybe Matthew Savoie?
    Interesting sidenote...no amateur pundits seemed to predict the Oilers hiring Bowman as GM.

      @@Marixa1979 Their d-group is average at best. I give more credit to Knoblauch for how he coached the team to play better team defense. The Oilers defense still has weaknesses that can be exploited by other teams. Stuart Skinner is a decent starting goalie(he still can be inconsistent at times as the Oilers high powered offense can mask his weaknesses), but Pickard is a journeyman backup. It should have been they upgraded the backup.

  • @Peksisarvinen
    @Peksisarvinen 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Oilers are so much better than last year. Not just because of Arvidsson and Skinner, both of whom could easily post career highs in points and goals if they stay healthy, but also because the young players (Bouchard, Stu, Holloway, Broberg) look like they're ready to take another step forward.
    Their PK is godly, the PP could be better than ever, the top 6 is ridiculous, the bottom 6 is ridiculous, the forward group as a whole is the best in the league by a country mile, Stu is going to silence a lot of people with his play, the defense should be improved now that Desharnais is finally gone and Broberg is in, and the team is motivated, experienced and hungry. I would expect this team to be an absolute wagon next season, and anything short of winning the cup is an unforgivable disaster.
    The only question marks are a) why the hell did they resign Perry, and b) who goes to create cap space? I would think either Ceci or Kane, and I'm fine with either one. Or maybe they just put Kane on LTIR and bring him back for the plaoyffs, Vegas-style. Whatever the case may be, this team is going run over a lot of teams this season.

  • @KptKrunch9481
    @KptKrunch9481 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A lot of Bouch's success is playing with McDavid and Draisaitl on the PP. Oilers will sign all three and people will be surprised how cheap we get them for (not saying they will be cheap). Also, with cap set to be around 100m 3 years from now (without the money pit known as the Arizona Coyotes gone and their 40m deficit a year drain on the NHL teams and assuming UTAH does the exact opposite which is being predicted) Oilers will be fine.

      ummmmm..... the oilers in '06 were mostly an AHL team, with a few deadline acquisitions via the TDL, and the fact St. Louis was WAAAAAAAAAAAY over the cap. Even with Pronger, they were a scrappy underdog all post-season. fun fact, that was the first time that both cup finalists failed to make the post-season, the year after. It's far more likely --- given the personnel both on the ice, and off... that we are on the cusp of witnessing a dynasty...?

    not an EDM fan or hater. given that the oilers have no GM at this time, with ken holland out and jeff jackson filling in...the double-J did a pretty good job with free agency. most , if not all of their assets are returning.
    that said, the oilers best chance for the stanley cup is 2025. once they get the new contracts coming in for bouch-bombs, draisaitl and mcjesus, that's going to be $40m to pay 3 guys. as a team achieves success, guys make a name for themselves and you can't afford to pay everyone what they deserve.
    i like that they figured out a way to get rid of campbell's contract. there's still fat to be trimmed, with ceci and nurse's contracts. that's $12-13m of garbage walking around. to stay competitive you gotta make as close to all your salary cap dollars count as you can. if EDM can legally use LTIR to put evander kane there, i say go for it.
    for now, barring injuries, i see EDM as the presumptive favorite to be the western rep in the SCF.

    To answer the title question: no. not in the slightest. The Oilers still lack scoring depth, they lack a competent defense as long as Darnell Nurse and Cody Ceci are taking valuable roster spots, and their goaltending is still rough, Skinner can be solid but very inconsistent and Pickard should not at all be in the NHL let along as a yearly back-up. They'll make playoffs because they have Draisaitl and Bouchard but they'll be out in the 2nd round probably.
