  • This episode of Grounded takes a look at Gill Airways, a regional airline considered "The North East's own airline" which ceased operations in 2001 following some underhandedness from their main creditor...
Gill Airways, formerly Gill Air and Gill Aviation before that operated several aircraft types over the years with the pretty unique Shorts 330 & Shorts 360 turboprops as well as ATR 42 & 72s and even some Fokker Jets.
I hope you are all enjoying the "Grounded" series, there are plenty more episodes coming up soon. This episode had been specially requested, if you have an airline you'd like to feature in a future episode do let me know, you never know - I might already be working on it ;)

As an ex flyer myself, I've got many memories of see Gill in and out of ABZ.
Your videos are really interesting. I'd love to see one featuring AirUK, the first airline I flew for. It's true what they say when you fly - you never forget your first!

Thanks Martin, I really appreciate that :) I do have AirUK in the works, along with both incarnations of BIA and AirUK Leisure. I agree though, you never forget your first (mine was Islandsflug for Excel).

Thank you for this. My easiest aviation memory is the Gill 330 over my house. Such a shame how it ended!

Pretty much yes, the old adage was that to make millions in the aviation industry was to start with billions and start an airline :/

    Another great video.
Would love to see some of the following :)
European Air Charter, bmi/bmi Regional, Air Southwest, Airtours/MyTravel, Monarch, Germania, Spanair , Futura, Small Planet and any other interesting 90s/00s charter airlines

      Thank you :)
I have completed the research and script for Air Southwest, I just need to record the audio then piece the episode together in post. Palmair is in the late stages of research, this will touch on European Air Charter which will eventually follow.
I will be doing a Monarch episode, only fitting that I do really however it'll be a little while off yet as I need to wait and see what the final administrators reports reveal plus any legal action against the owners. It is the same reason I have not covered Primera, WOW or Small Planet - yet :)
Airtours and MyTravel will be separate episodes as I do prefer to keep them specific to the airline, they will be covered in due course but given their merger with Thomas Cook it means going through the history of TCX beyond Flying Colours, Caledonian, Air World right back to British Airtours and even BEA Airtours before that.
Remember Air Scandic? Well the research and script is complete for that episode, it just needs audio and the episode that has had to have a last minute re-write covers Virgin Sun ;)

@@ExpoAviation Oh wow that all sounds great! There are so many airlines you can do, even ones I have forgotten about!
Air Southwest have a special place in my heart, I started my aviation career as a dispatcher at LBA and grew very fond of the airline when handling them, they had superb crew many of whom I made good friends with. Many of the airlines have such histories and so many airlines they can trace their roots back to.
I sure do remember Air Scandic and their awful 'microsoft paint' livery! I flew with Virgin Sun in 1999 from Manchester, they were fantastic so look forward to their episode too.
I now live in Jersey in operations for a little airline called Blue Islands, don't know if you have heard of us, we fly 5 ATR's :)

I flew with Air Southwest once, MAN-BRS and thought it was pretty good. I guess it was a novelty for me at the time as this was the first time I was on a turboprop and also my first time on a plane "on my own" as I was 18 (not counting flying lessons though). I have got a model of one of the Dash-8s which I bought online from their website which at the time I think they were the only airline in the UK to offer such a thing. It was certainly a shame to see them go but in the end they were a victim of their own success :(
I haven't heard of Blue Islands until you mentioned it, or maybe I have and just forgotten. I hope you are having a great time with them, it's one heck of a lifestyle in the industry :)

Expo Aviation yeah they were a great little airline, glad you enjoyed your flight! You’re so lucky to have a model, I always wanted one and have looked for years with no luck :(.
Thanks! Life is certainly good fun in aviation, good and terrible days but i wouldn’t change it for anything.
