Maybe you could show some of these projects that don’t go well, what happens, and how you deal with this when it does happen. I would like to watch something like that - and don’t know anyone who does that.

Thank you. I needed to hear this. A lot of my crafts don't turn out well but crafting is more of a therapy for me. I lost my oldest son and crafting helps to keep my mind in a good place even if the project looks like crap lol. It helps to be able to laugh at my fells.

I started "hard core" with DIY about 3 years ago because I wanted a lot of new decor stuff and new Christmas decorations but didn't have the budget for it...😂😂 I love it! it's like therapy for me. And yes the first things I tried turned down awful, but you get better. Time is always an issue for everyone these days, especially with kids, but if it's something you really love doing you make time for it. Somehow, someway 💪🏽💪🏽

I fear failure forsure, but I also fear success, weird I know, but I do. Maybe it's a fear of failing at success, if you know what I mean.

Thank you so much for addressing this issue. I have been sewing and crafting for over 30 years now. Fixing mistakes is a huge part of every project I make! I made a no sew fleece blanket for my granddaughter yesterday and ended up cutting one of the corners incorrectly. I had to do really work to fix my mistake! But, she absolutely LOVED it when I gave it to her last night, and NO ONE can tell that I messed up😌

What turns me off is the cost of all supplies and tools for one project. Some tools I might never use again. So The total cost of a project might be higher than the cost of the readt-to-use item in the shop.

Hi Christina 👋 I used to be afraid to diy or build things but I don't anymore. First of all, most of my DIYs are Dollar Tree items so if I mess up it only cost a few dollars. I also joined a few crafting groups on Facebook and they are so inspiring! I'm learning and growing! I'm a TH-cam fanatic so I'm watching videos to learn how to better my craft. The biggest compliment I got this year was from my daughters! They told me I could sell some of my DIYs 😳😍 Thanks for sharing 😊💞🍁🎃🦉🐈

This is such a great video!! There is a learning curve in any sort of making or cooking. But it’s part of the process. It’s fun to practice skills and eventually have finished projects you love. But process is part of it. People need to learn to love the process and figuring things out. And if something doesn’t work, oh well. 🤷🏻‍♀️Start again. 🙅🏻‍♀️ This is how to have a hobby. I think people have forgotten how to simply enjoy hobbies. It’s not all a competition and making or baking for the sake of doing it is so rewarding. ❤️

    Dear commenters,
Know that I say the following with love and because I, myself, have had to call BS on myself with using the “I don’t have the time” or “I don’t have the money”, excuses. I’ve already had to go through re-programming my mind and figuring the secrets of the successful.
    #1) STOP using excuses. Period.
Reasons must have viable consequences or outcome to explaining why something can’t be done.
Fear, fear is what will keep you from the other side of life.
The fun, spontaneous moments memories are made of. You’ll never get there if you stay stuck in your comfort zone.
That [excuse] reason, for NOT doing something [anything] is nothing more THAN an excuse.
If you want that Starbucks but still need wipes, you’ll cut the wipe brand for cheaper to save that extra $1.40 for your Starbucks, right?!
    Simple.
If you want something BAD enough, there won’t be any reasons [excuses] that will get in your way.
    Period.
There’s no 2 stpries, no 1 single, Exception of a reason, that hasn’t ALREADY been heard or told.
We’re all human, we all have the same 24 hrs in a day. No one has “an extra hour”, you FIND or MAKE the time by sacrificing what’s not fulfilling or serving you, to do what you want.
Otherwise, the pain of your situation, has to become unbearable before you’re ready to make a change.
    Don’t wait until then.
Start. Start slow. Start today. Start with a tutorial. Just start.
Money won’t just flow into your bank account or hands without doing something.
Many millennials are hunting for secret formulas. There isn’t one. Trust me, I searched as well. The internet + tech may make our lives easier, convenient, etc, that doesn’t mean to stop doing the actual work, sacrificing, hard work (with crafting + DIY) etc.
start today. Fail often. Fail forward and fail until you succeed.
You can only fail if you don’t learn from your mistakes.

My favourite pastime had always been making dolls. The first doll or should I say a miniature figure of a baby in a crib made out of clay. I was 8 yrs old when my youngest brother made his version of my clay baby except there's a difference & my brother asked, "how did you make the blanket stay up?" Instead of making him feel bad (I'm not that evil), I gave him the only answer to give him, "Your baby needs a body. Always pay attention to the details. In this case, you need to roll another ball & place it under the blanket. Your baby will be happy." I showed him my baby with a smile on his face. Years later, he bought model kits, built them & painted with details based on the sticker decals which came with the kits. As for me, I bead my 1-inch fairy dolls & boy, they evolved from TONS of mistakes (6 yrs of mistakes) & became the flower fairy dolls I made today. Each of my 1-inch beaded flower fairy dolls take a little over 8 hrs (mostly knotting embroidery floss on size 11° seed beads for the hair) with a LOT of TLC & patience. I felt very happy when I reached the finish line.

Waiting to get our house done. Lost all my craft stuff & tools. I never thought I would want a hot glue gun so bad in my life... But I hope I can get one some day. My biggest enemy is time. A while back before the previous manager was replaced by the current manager, I worked full time night shifts 6 days a week. The current manager had to cut my hours down to 30 hrs/week which split up to 3 days/2 nights. For the 3 days, I spent 2 hrs on my doll. As for the 2 nights, I spent my time until my eyes felt heavy & fell asleep on my craft table. My cheek had tiny indentations where my beads were.

There is a couple of things that keeps me from creating what I’d like. It’s that I don’t know how to use or have the power tools I’d need to make the kind of projects I want. And also the space. I pull out all the things I need to do a project but then never get to finish because of time restraints. So ultimately I have piles of project stuff all over and it makes the house look so messy and disorganized. I know that is frustrating for my husband also. I have dreamed of having my own craft room or shed, but I don’t have a designated area. I just have piles of craft stuff in the basement. Another thing that makes me crazy is that I don’t know how to organize all of my crafting things/supplies.

My biggest fear is not finishing it. I use to do a lot of crafting and would frequent the craft stores mutiple times a week. I would start a project and be enthusiastic and excited then eventually fell bored of it and went back to the craft store to start another one. I eventually ended up with two large cupboards stocked full of supplies and unfinished projects. Cost me tones of money so I stopped crafting. Haven't done hardly any crafts in 4 years. I want to try quiltting cause I saw a great tutorial for beginners but too afraid of having another unfinished project. Maybe I should just stick to small quick projects lol

  • @cheleholsted

My biggest thing is when I start a project and it doesn't go the way I want it to I won't finish the project. I totally agree with going smaller. Because I think my projects that I start might be to big. Thank you for the encouragement. Now I need to finish projects that I started. Lol

I keep lists for “important” things that I have to do so I don’t forget as well as set timers on my phone with the task written out! How did I not think to do this for crafting?! 🤦🏼‍♀️
The other thing that I did was to make a section so I can save the videos I want to keep as projects in different categories. I need to go back and make more categories as some were quickly saved where they don’t belong where they are, but your idea has definitely lit a fire under my butt!!!! Yes, the most ‘seasoned’ crafters became seasoned by the fails just as much as by the successes! We learn the most by the trials in life, even in crafting and home decor! The failures actually give me courage to continue because I know better what NOT to do..and that is extremely valuable. Truly, I haven’t thrown anything in the trash yet because I have just changed and adjusted my project while working on it and even though the end result was NOT what I first intended it was not a loss because it became something else and all was not lost. Often it became a neat gift for someone or for a different area of my home than planned. Some things have to be completely restarted when things like the wrong glue turned into disaster and that is SO frustrating, especially if it was not a cheaper project to begin with. There isn’t many things I make that don’t get pulled apart and repurposed from one year to the next and knowing this allows me to feel more flexible about my crafts. I love CHANGE and could not afford to mix things up any other way. There are a few more costly pieces that I think long and hard over before purchasing so I don’t make the kinds of decor mistakes you were speaking of because of trying to compare with others. I have learned to be a rogue (urban definition) about some things and simply never jumping on the proverbial ‘bandwagon’ of certain looks unless they truly make my heart sing. This video was SO important for ALL of us to hear and I thank you so much!

Hi Cristina. Thank you for this video. I am one of them, who are afraid to take this journey. I watch many videos of diys from many people to learn, to have ideas and enjoy the creativity that i share as well. I want and wanted time ago to start a channel, a store online something like that to work from home because i find it relaxing and i enjoy but guess what, I haven't done. my excuses are exactly the same that you mention in this video. I have several containers with supplies that i buy every time i go to stores, thrift stores and they are in clearance or cheap and the other big excuse I always give is: i need a craft room :) but watching your video it was like listening to you describing me. Hi! This is such a great topic! I like to craft and do DIY’s. I love what other people craft and DIY. The imperfections in handmade things are absolutely beautiful to me. For me, I like being in the process. Sometimes the results are fantastic and sometimes they are a disaster, and everything in between. I had to change my thinking to I CAN do this or that. You and Shannon from the Daily DIYer helped with that thinking change. I also have some of the right tools for the jobs and love to use them. I recently made a coffee table out of stuff in the garage...extremely rustic but functional. Because of that success I then became inspired to take out the carpet and install a wood laminate floor in my craft room. I bought the cheapest laminate I could and did it a little bit at a time and watched a lot of TH-cam how to’s. (It cost about $200.00 and an extra case of flooring was available if I needed for about $20.00). Sometimes we have skills that we don’t realize....like skills for cutting fabric can be applied to cutting wood. Measuring stitch gauge can be applied to measuring other things. I love that saying, “She thought she could, so she did”. I believe in all of you crafters, so if you are experiencing fear, borrow my faith in you, and try!

Instead, if something doesn’t turn out how either one of them wanted their project to turn out, I tell them it’s a learning process and maybe their idea was meant to turn out the way it did; so if they are disappointed by the outcome, there is “NO” rule that says that they can not try it again. As a mom who had my children doing crafts since they were 1.5-2 years old. I let them get paint on themselves to making mud pies in our backyard and other things, they learned and had fun doing what they were doing. My only rule I had for them after they were done crafting was to clean up and at present time they both continue to create and build things as they both have confidence.

I love that! I think it's so important for kids to be allowed to experiment & get a little messy. 😊

Hi Christina, again brilliant content. I loved your give it a try attitude, it is amazing what you would discover about yourself. Two months ago I learned to do freehand embroidery and loved it so much that, I am running embroidery workshop at work in 3 weeks time. The hardest part is to give people the confidence that there is no wrong way, just give it a go and see what happens...the possibilities are endless, and you have so much fun whilst you are giving it a go. 💟👍👍👍thank you for talking about the pile of projects that you'd rather forget, 😂😂😂we've all been there and they are part of learning and growing as a creator

I love DIYing but can't find the time to do much of it. I'm a stay at home, homeschooling mom of 5. So, finding time for anything not related to homeschooling, cleaning, cooking or just moming in general is hard most of the time. Honestly though I love my life and my oldest daughter is such a creative DIYer so when there is extra time we have a lot of fun creating together. It is so neat to see the things she comes up with that I would have never thought of.

Thank you for this video! The timing of this video couldn’t be better as I have been on the fence about starting a DIY journey myself. You look beautiful too🌸

I think that my worst enemy is time and in addition- sometimes, one can but the same for much less/ better quality.

True! I only Diy things if I can make it for less than I can buy it or if what I want is not available like a certain pattern or style, etc.

Great tips! I did a video recently about failed DIYs and what no one talks about. DIYs are hit or miss, but I love doing them! Thank you for sharing!
