The Humayun's Tomb is a 16th-century Mughal-era tomb in Delhi, India. It is the first example of a garden tomb on the Indian subcontinent, and it is also the first structure to make use of red sandstone at such a scale. The tomb was commissioned by Humayun's first wife and chief consort, Empress Bega Begum, in 1569-70, and designed by Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, a Persian architect chosen by her. The tomb was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
The tomb stands in the center of a Persian-style Charbagh or quadrilateral garden, divided into four parts by causeways (crossed by water channels) representing the four rivers that flow in paradise. The complex also includes several smaller monuments, including the tomb of Isa Khan Niyazi, an important noble in Sher Shah Suri's court. A visit to this historical tomb can be an educational and cultural experience. The best time to visit is sunrise or sunset when the red sandstone glows beautifully.
