    I feel like LM just pulled a giant “you can’t sit with us.” Hair care does not need to be exclusionary. Call your hair care whatever you want. Do whatever works for you and don’t let anyone bully you into feeling bad about taking care of yourself properly instead of following their dogma.

      I just went and looked up that post on her Instagram. I can’t respect her for that and it is very petty. She could easily have her method and say she gets why it doesn’t work for everyone and work need to modify it. She could have had grave and said she was happy to give a starting off point for those of us who have struggled with our hair.

    I feel like Lorraine Massey’s curly girl method was developed for her hair. It’s really only good for people who have hair and scalp like hers. It was developed at a time when hair care was awful. Everything was INTENSE shampoo and weak conditioners or a lot of silicone. So her no poo idea was revolutionary at the time. Not washing your hair everyday was revolutionary. Products are so much better and diverse today.

      Right? In the last couple months I've also started hearing more about the "tightly curly method". So she even seems to have lost people on the other end of the spectrum with hair curlier than LM along with those less curly or with different scalp types or porosities.

      Idk, my dad was telling me I didn't need to wash my hair every day back in the 90s because he grew up with women who were raised during the Depression, who only bathed once a month and got thier hair "set". 🤷‍♀️

    • @lisamgrimsley8974
      @lisamgrimsley8974 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really, the idea that you had to bathe every day was promoted by the soap industry, back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. My family didn’t fall for it- my sister was regularly seeing a dermatologist as an INFANT, and he was horrified by the idea. He FORBID my mother to bathe my sister daily, because it is so bad for the skin. This was before ‘microbiome’ was even a word. So, by the time the 90’s rolled around, and the ‘wash your hair every day’ campaign started (yup, by the shampoo industry), I already knew better. Many of my peers (I was born in 1970) thought I was gross for only showering 3 times a week, and washing my hair 1-2 times a week. And yet, they couldn’t figure out why I had healthier hair, and far better skin than them! Advertising can be a really toxic influence on people.

      waves and one or too curls here and there. But i have to embrace myself and just treat my hair good. I have also many strands but fine hair. I just
      hated my hair when i was younger. Because it was frizzy fluffy and sometimes wavy and a bit curly. I have litterally done it all to my hair to straighten it

    I guess Lorraine does not remember what she put in her book. In chapter 5 she says that wavies can use sulfate free shampoo (page 52). In the same chapter she mentions that you can use a diffuser or hooded dryer (page 57). I think there were 2 editions of the book, so the pages may be off from one edition to the other.

      I can understand that the Curly Girl Method is a brand. And that like with other brands for example Nike and Apple and so on, they don't want people selling products under the name Nike or Apple because that could bring them in trouble and it could cut into their sales.
      But at the same time, she didn't start it as a brand for as far as I know. But just as a way to make hair care more inclusive. And her brand is called Curly World. Not Curly Girl Method. And now she is closing the door, making it less inclusive... Sigh...

  • @Wingsofscarlet
    @Wingsofscarlet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    I guess I'd just call it "Textured Hair Care" since that basically covers all the wavy, curly, coily hair bases. Honestly, with the term "Curly Girl Method" now being restricted to what Lorraine states it to be, it's kind of freeing in a way. Now I feel like I can branch out to other products outside of what's "Curly Girl Approved" without the guilt of not following the CGM rules. I always felt bad using products with silicones or using higher heat with my diffuser because it wasn't "CGM approved", even though I could use certain silicones without issues, and my hair looked better and dried faster with higher heat. Now, since all the products and methods I use are not at all in any way "CGM approved", I can use whatever I want without guilt 'cause it doesn't have the stigma of not being "CGM approved".

      That’s what I felt. I was always feeling guilty when I brushed my hair. I was constantly checking labels and getting frustrated because there was so little I could use. Berating myself for not following it to a tee. It wasn’t fun, and making my hair healthier shouldn’t be something that keeps me upset. I finally let go of the strict CGM and I get recommendations for products to try from Courtney and other “modified curly girl” TH-camrs. I figure if it’s safe enough for them to use, it’s safe enough for me to try it. 😉

    I explain what I do as “curly girl inspired” I never did CGM directly but take some concepts...

  • @jaimecroft8532
    @jaimecroft8532 3 ปีที่แล้ว +68

    What "I" think is important to remember about strict CGM is that it isn't an all-inclusive method. It works for a specific hair, curl and scalp type. Generally hair that is more coarse, has a tighter curl pattern and a drier scalp. I doesn't work for me because it isn't meant for me and my medium fine, 2B-3B waves & curls, and my normal to oily scalp. It also doesn't really work for where I live and the climate/weather I deal with. Your method tries to be inclusive, and show wavies and curlies the path to healthier, happier curls, waves and scalps, and the need to find what works for THEM. You may have been inspired by CGM, but you haven't allowed yourself to be limited by it. I love your channel and all it stands for. Don't worry about those who don't.

When I found out how hardcore she was years ago, and then that she had her own hair products (devacurl) she pushed on people, I simply ignored her “method”. Then came reading online about people’s scalp issues from following the cgm. So I read her book, then learned about the devacurl mess (that thankfully I never used), and now after hearing this and about her NEW products, wow, just no. Thank the Lord I never skip my daily washes, bought her products or care anything about her. I respect the good take aways from her method, but she’s just way uptight and her full method works for VERY few.

Changing products, wet brushing after conditioner, plopping, high heat diffusing, product recommendations, layering styling product, etc... Have been the saving grace for my hair. It is healthier and growing longer and my curls are shiny and more defined than ever before. I appreciate all of your videos and your genuine kindness and sharing your knowledge with this channel. So... I'm with you! Guess I'm not following curly girl method either. I'm okay with that. Thank you for helping me love my hair again!

    I feel like the term "Curly Girl Method" has evolved past Lorraine. For many, it's just "No sulfates, sillicones, or parabens." I can understand why she might have issue with the word "modified" but I also feel like her book is seen as dated now and that the fact that people still use the term is a win on its own for her.

Not all the same products you use work for me, but I still feel included in your videos because the information I’ve learned has helped me improve my hair and scalp health dramatically. You and others in the curly community not doing the cgm are seriously helping us all who don’t fall into those strict guidelines. I picked up the handbook a decade ago and have struggled my way trying to go shampoo free and brush free and all kinds of nonsense. I ended up much like you did- with an inflamed and angry scalp that smelled bad and hair that looked weighed down, greasy, and dirty. I have been feeling ashamed of my lack of follow through with the method until I found new curly girls like you who are promoting hair acceptance, not judgment. We ain’t going back! CGM shouldn’t be turned into some kind of sect. When I started educating myself about my hair I was really overwhelmed. I came across your videos and for the first time I didn’t feel overwhelmed because you simply explained what worked for you while stressing that it wouldn’t necessarily work for me. I still watched you because you gave me a perfect amount of information. I kept looking for simplicity and found curly susie. But I needed your videos for theory as much as I needed curly susie videos for practice. And sometimes it was visa versus! So you two will always be my go to and I am really grateful that I have started my hair care journey with your help. I never went 100% curly girl method. I looked at what the “strict” rules were and immediately knew some wouldn’t work for my hair. It’s too fine, too subject to buildup, it needs to be clarified periodically. And some of the super strict rules don’t make sense to me (like why are silicones OH SO BAD but other emollients that are hard to remove are ok??). I’m not too worried about being a part of anyone’s exclusive club? I just do what works for me lol

      I actually found CGM to be very restrictive too, so I'm actually glad we'll be parting from the "official" name. I've personally applied it always only partially, because my hair absolutely need a "proper" shampoo every 3-4 wash days to not look dirty and itchy, clarifying cgm products do absolutely nothing to me and actually irritate my scalp further.
      In the Italian community we started using the name "My Curly Method" (MCM) and embracing a more carefree approach~
      (Also I've stopped being against sulfates and silicones in both haircare and skincare, especially after checking the general scientific/trichologists' consensus + talking with my own trichologist and my dermatologist... and also because going to university - psychology, but the scientific method still applies - allowed me to study and get hands-on with research methods and how to understand the quality and reliability of a research paper. I'm not the right person to explain the hows and whys, but I'd suggest to watch LabMuffin's and Sarah Ingle's videos, they kind of give a tl;dr on how to avoid pseudoscience-y haircare/skincare marketing claims.)

    I'm new to the curl girl method. I started in March.. I just bought the book a week ago and ironically after your posted this video I reached the chapter in Lorraine's book about homemade products and potions. She says the wash is a 3 step method but then encourages using other homemade products for more shine, added protein, frizz control, etc. So technically you are following the curly girl method you are just using already made products that are sold in stores instead of making your own with essential oils. Could be interesting to see you make and try those products in a video but since I have started going "all natural" with the "curly girl method" you have been a huge huge help. Thank you, Courtney! Keep up the great work. :)

    I just got into embracing my natural hair (2b hair, with some 2a/2c strands--- used to brush out my hair and braid it while wet cause I didn't understand how to help the waves) and honestly some of the stuff is a major turn away for me. The CGM seems so strict and exclusive, and it really discourages me and I've only started trying products like 4 weeks ago. I really like how helpful your channel is :)

    I read the book and have always understood what the "Curly Girl Method" entailed. I knew all the restrictions were not for me. Cowashing does not work for me. I need an actual shampoo. I like to layer my products and sometimes I only use a leave-in and cream. I like using different products. My curl pattern is such that I can brush out my hair on day two or so and it looks good enough to wear, kind of like I rolled it. I deep condition every week and I clarify at least once a month. I don't really give a dang what we call it. I do whatever I want to my hair.

    Kudos, Court! 💖 I'm a 3b & have hung back from commenting even though I've loved your channel for the longest! I was so over CGM a couple of years ago when it started to seem very cultish & exclusionary. I never used Deva but was appalled that not only has LM been silent about what ppl have gone through with Deva but seems to be doubling down on a 'method' which, by definition, can't always work for everybody. It has always concerned me that women especially are conditioned to think they need to adhere to all kinds of restrictions, diets, detoxes, trendy 'challenges,' endless product shopping as if there were anything wrong with their natural selves and as if they ought to blame themselves if they can't stick with all of that instead of just living their best life. Most of all, it's a distraction from all of the other wonderful, productive, talented gifts that women/ppl could otherwise devote their intelligence and resources to, esp. in these already challenged-enough times. This was a brave & thoughtful video. Btw, I've always wanted to tell you that your hair, even on your worst hair day, reminds me of a silver-screen goddess like Rita Hayworth or Veronica Lake, & your hair colour is stunning! Love you girl, keep doing you! Oh, & just saying 'hair care' speaks volumes more than CGM. xoxoxo 💖💖💖

    Now I am totally confused. I see her (LM's) point that she came up with the original "Curly Girl Method" so maybe we should use a different term if we are not following it the way she describes it. But I REALLY have to agree with Courtney that the price of LM's products are prohibitive. With the amount of conditioner and gel that I go through on a weekly basis, I simply could not pay $34 (plus tax and shipping) for 12 oz of product. We live on one income and have 2 children to feed and clothe. So I greatly appreciate Courtney's analysis and advice on what MORE AFFORDABLE products might work for me!

As I started using the products in accordance with your tips, I genuinely swear my hair has improved phenomenally over the last year. My previously frizzy, separated undefined strands are now so defined into semi-curly waves ngl.
    Tbh, that time when I was researching on the CGM, I had never heard of LM in the first place. This proves how irrelevant she became to her own method because of the strict "patenting" rules she was imposing on it.

    I so appreciate your thoughts on this subject. I am a "Curly Girl Method-er" and use this method still but like everything else in this world you have to find your balance and what works for you. On wash days my hair is great but by the second day it would turn frizzy, frizzy, frizzy. I tried CGM method of refreshing my hair, but it seems to get dirty faster and had to wash it again by the third day, which had me going thru lots of product $$$$. Today it seems to be worse because I stopped dying my hair and have gone naturally grey. I came across your You Tube channel and I have been following your REFRESH method and it has worked for me!!!! I love how soft and shiny my hair is now and so manageable days after "wash day". I have been able to stretch my washing days to twice a week. I think I typed in "wavy curly girl" or maybe "wavy hair" on TH-cam when I found your wonderful channel (my hair is barely wavy).
    Whatever you end up calling it, it's *your* online community.
    It started with TH-cam for me. I forget now which video led me to the Curly Girl Handbook, but I got it. I thought it was a good book and I found the stories inspiring. But it was only one of many influences.

    So glad I found you. My hair became wavier & curlier with multiple surgeries & menopause. It’s coarse & thick, with an oily scalp, but I also have super sensitive skin & allergies. I like getting it clean, I like brushing it, I can’t use anything that causes build-up or weighs my hair down or has a strong smell. I won’t spend more than 15 minutes in a day on hair & makeup, because I’m a low maintenance sort of girl. I’ve been lost as how to care for it since it’s changed. Straightening has been my go-to for decades, but my hair is simply too unwieldy these days. We are so connected to our hair. Not from a vanity perspective, but emotionally & psychologically our hair is somehow connected to our inner selves. Thank you for your authenticity & practicality. It’s a welcome change in a world of slicked-up social media.

    Great Video!!! Its been a heavy subject that's for sure!! I think you addressed everything so beautifully!! I recently changed my bio to say #mycurlymethod and wrote a post all about what I did and what I continue to do for the health of my curls. Thank you for all the work that you put in on your IG page and TH-cam channel!! Embracing my curls was the hardest thing I've done and it's been 100% worth the journey!!

    Great video. You were very respectful to Lorraine and her wishes for her brand. I will no longer be saying I do the Curly Girl Method and using that phrase since that is her wish. I find it very sad though and from a business perspective, probably not a great move on her part to distance so many people from herself. When we hold on to something so tightly, it can stifle growth and opportunity, and strangle the life out of it. Just my two cents.

    It’s like reading a book or the news; It’s someone else’s viewpoints but you learn something from it to form your own views. You’ve done a marvelous job in creating what works for you, Courtney, and have helped others to find what works for them.
