    If you look at the under belly of the calf, it appears to have an umbilical hernia. It has probably become infected, and emitting a foul odor, which in most cases will lead to a calf being abandoned. When this cow got close with her trunk, she probably caught the smell, and attacked the calf, hoping to drive it away.
    Although, as a whole, it's uncommon for elephants to have umbilical hernias, when they do occur, they usually become infected. When this happens, it's considered a death sentence for the calf, rarely will one survive. Around 25% of all rescued abandoned calves have infected umbilical hernias.

    A fine example of elephant compassion and maternal instinct--orphaned babies aren't abandoned by the herd (according to elephant myths)! That rejected baby elephant will make a fine meal for the hyenas or lions.

    • @alvexok5523
      @alvexok5523 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They need not be seperated from the herd then. The adult elephants will trample those hyenas and lions if they try harming the little ones, they are good at protecting the smaller more defenseless elephants. If they are around. If the little one is abandoned though, you're right, the lions and hyenas may kill it and eat it.

    My guess: Baby elephants apparently cannot see very well and reach for the nearest big moving thing... so this baby may not necessarily be an orphan (although the poster says so). If it really was an orphan it would not survive. And to her credit, the non-mother was not really aggressive, but just precise enough to force the baby to find his real mother.

    • @alansparks4600

      Elephant mothers are the best in the animal kingdom, and elephant herds are very kind and loving towards each other. That being said, we are still dealing with animals, and they still do animal things. Pregnant Cows still leave the herd, deliver a calf and just walk away. Sick calves, ugly calves, and disabled calves are abandoned along the trail destined for starvation, and predation. Often the mother, and herd encounter the calf on it's return leg down the trail, the calf screams for it's mother, who by this time is emotionally finished with that calf, and will stomp, kick, gore, and run off the calf.
      Elephant herds are known to take in orphaned and abandoned calves, but only if they have an agreeable milk producing female with no calf of her own, and again they will pass completly on sick, ugly, and disabled calves.
      As I said elephant mothers are the best, but their benevolence is somewhat overstated.

      I think a lot of these seeming maladaptive behaviours can also be attributed to lack of land and resources for the animals, due to industrialization and encroaching of humans into their spaces. I go past Hluhluwe Game Reserve every 2 months and the animals there are much calmer and tend to be more inclusive because, altho harsh, their environment has been so well protected that they aren't in distress at all times, and that's due to South Africa doing very well in terms of conservation (not perfect, of course). Hluhluwe is so well protected that being unable to get somewhere because traffic came to a standstill because animals were on the road, is a valid excuse and no one gets mad because the locals prize the animals and their environment above anything else

      A dump, in the animal world, is not considered bad. Only humans think of feces in a bad way, in spite of the fact that ALL humans are walking around with feces in their bellies, which does not bother them. It only bothers them when it is out of their body! Humans are not logical, but emotionally driven. Elephants are not.

About how dreadful the smell is, we don't have to be taught that it smells terrible, we have automatically discovered that ourselves. So that's what I don't understand about some animals not minding it. It doesn't bother us because we're taught that it's disgusting, we've already known that. So why doesn't it bother the animals?
