Hi guys, Elayna I’d like to thank you for your lovely response to the message that I sent to you the other day on Instagram. It was very nice and shows that you are a beautiful person on the inside and outside. When I make conch, I usually trim the dark color off of the meat before I cook it or before I make a salad out of it. Cheers from Florida.
We used to have a real love for conch chowder. But here's our question for you Riley: Considering queen conch is endangered in the Caribbean and Bahamas -- and prohibited from collection by foreign yachts, do you think that maybe it would be a good idea to use your massive following to be a good steward of the oceans? Conch aren't everywhere. They're on the way out. What do you say? Future generations? Don't you have a baby on the way? Cheers Mate!
Please cite a source for that claim that Queen Conch are "endangered." I was unable to find ANY. While I they are likely being over-fished in some areas of the Caribbean, and we personally will forgo collecting or eating conch when we visit, that is not the same thing as endangered.
Kent Fletcher, when you check into the Bahamas, by law you have to ask for a fishing permit. The permit is free. The permit comes with a list of regulations. It's unfortunate, but the queen conch is being dragged into oblivion just like so many other species in our oceans, while no one seems to notice or care. Just search "queen conch endangered" and start learning. Regardless, thanks for doing your part and forgoing conch. Here is one link of many with the Bahamian regulations: www.myoutislands.com/things-to-do-in-the-bahamas/bahamas-fishing/regulations
I'd still love to hear what Riley and Elayna have to say about ocean stewardship, and how they play a part -- whether they like it or not. It's a real shame that as one of the most popular YT channels out there they can't make themselves a little bit more aware of what's happening. They're setting a really bad example here. Here's some more reading for the uninformed. news.mongabay.com/2018/02/queen-conch-dying-out-in-the-bahamas-despite-marine-parks/
In all of my trips to the Bahamas and dealing with the local fisherman, not once have I ever heard that they are endangered. Every time a diver goes down for conch, they would come up with at least 5 or 6 per free dive. That doesn’t sound like a problem to me. At worst, I can see them maybe creating a short season for the conch but I have not heard anything at all about the conch being endangered.
Thanks for being honest about the taste. Your genuine reaction is refreshing . On most ( if not all) TV shows theyd just pretend it was the best thing they'd ever tasted. Love the show as always. Cheers
best video you've had in a while. not over-polished, bland, jumpy and hard to follow. just simple, funny, and all smiles. i like the focused narrative while remaining spontaneous and light hearted. this felt really genuine and I could see a part of your relationship that is hard to communicate through video. your personalities and true love really shows here and to be able to watch this and escape the gloom is a really special thing. I haven't smiled like that in a long time. thank you. this video really touched me
Hey guy’s, I am a chef - I chose to be a chef when I was 15 yrs old. I think the best way to eat the conch is ceviche. I understand for the safety of the baby that was not possible. I will be following you people for as long as you make videos. You’re beautiful. I wish you both health and happiness always.
Ceviche would still not top our delicious Bahamian conch salad and furthermore, even though there are a couple of dishes that could have been prepared, cracked conch might be top choice for people who really know about conch.
One must not like every exotic concoction- eat what you appreciate and appreciate what you eat that is what respect to our wonderful mother nature is all about.
As others have mentioned, conch is very much like abalone and they require a lot of tenderizing to make them soft. I've tried cooking them many different ways and have found the best way is not to overcomplicate it with seasonings or frying. Grilling them and then adding a Spritz of lime and salt and pepper is all that is needed for a lite tasty treat. Thank you for your shows and all the hard work you put in to make them entertaining! Nicely done!
Another method to remove the conch without destroying the shell is to tie a line to its foot then tie a five pound dive weight to that. Now set the conch on two sticks over a five gallon bucket with the weight hanging, the conch will get tired and fall outof its shell. This takes a few hours so you what to do this ahead of time. you can put ice in the bucket if you what to do this while your sleeping.... I know it sounds silly, but it works.
Riley, YOUR HUMOR is OUTSTANDING!!! Don't ever modify it for the camera... well, not for me anyway. You often have me lol.... which is SOOO therapeutic AND GOOD FOR THE SOUL!!! Goodonya you two!! Can't believe I am finding old videos I hadn't seen before, yay!!!
I was pondering why your channel gets better by the week and came to the conclusion that it's because you two are so real. There was a period of time, right after you got the new La Vagabond when you were getting new "sea legs". But now you are back to the La Vagabond that I fell in love with from the very start. I subscribe to just shy of 40 TH-cam channels. Some have 10-20 unwatched episodes. But not yours! I genuinely just love you guys. Fair winds!
Agree, new boat, teething problems, new location, Mediterranean upper middle bogan syndrome kicking in, some guy with a knot top changing their original style, great he taught you some skills guys but I much preferred your original style blurry images and all. Anyway the old style is back with a bit more polish camera work and editing thrown in. Good learning curve for them. Great to see them back.
Hydroman 7 I tried to be completely complimentary and say something similar because about 3 weeks ago I binged watched every episode in 5 days and he didn't appreciate my comment at all. I was crushed because I always leave the most adoring comments because I adore them and their channel so much. Wonder why you got away unscathed 😉 oh well I still love them.
Growing up in the Bahamas there was always a rule with conch. You have to cook it for under 2 minutes or longer than 2 hours. Anything in between and you got rubber. Love you guys!
Bless your hearts. You need an old time Bahamian to show you how to cook conch. We need to get you a proper mallet to tenderize it too! Good effort for the first try.
You two inspired me to do so much with how little i have and to be happy on any given day, you two are so funny and i can't imagine how amazing it would be to spend an evening together, two very humbled and great people live you guys!

Ive always liked Conch. Conch fritters are diced conch mixed into a cornmeal batter and fried like a hush puppy. Excellent with a sauce. In Jamaica our dive instructor cooked us conch. I did not see it prepared but suspected it was skinned and cleaned very well then pounded and steamed in tinfoil on the grill with lots of butter and garlic. YUM! It was so tender and not greasy. The best ever was when it was steamed lightly in the shell, extracted (no hammer, just a hook to pull it out), cleaned and sliced very thin into a garden salad. The meat was sweet and tender. Your video made me hungry!

Conch is a lot like abalone and even squid, gotta pound it to smithereens and cook it fast or it toughens up again. Breadcrumb batter requires a long cooking time, a beer batter less so. Also coconut oil is too strong a flavour for conch. Nice video though. A bit like hanging out with you for the afternoon.
You guys should probably try that conch in a gumbo or seafood stew. I think it would be better after an hour or more cooking. cheers, from Ottawa Canada P.S......retired chef.

Some good points. But I believe your grace under pressure is remarkable. An example to all having courage to set sail from safe harbor to open seas... Mucho gusto Senior Rhyles 👍
Their lazy this is ages ago they only care about patrons ._..._.. Like the rest of the sailing channels make 3 episode out of what could be one great episode ! After 4 years of edit video should only take 10 -12 hour for 45 mins their just lazy conch's bwaaahaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!
Your suppose to skin the conch. Then you beat the hell out of it till you can almost see through it. Conch when deep fried is golden brown and tender. Serve it with tarter sauce with lemon or lime.
I so miss conch fritters and conch salad. I spent about six months living in Georgetown, Greater Exhuma and I just about lived on them. That and red beans and rice from the Two Turtles. I've always thought Conch tasted like clams, but a bit stronger. :) Oh...by the way...just how many rancid, salty cat feet have you eaten man?
Hello, Im from The Virgin Islands. The best way to eat conch is "Conch with dumplings in a butter sauce". Absolutely Delicious!!!😀 Now cooking conch like fish does have a sea food aroma. Just goggle, Virgin Islands conch in/with butter sause or conch with dumplins in a butter sause. I belive it's one of the best tasting seafood dishes period.Oh if anyone is wondering my icon photo is a drawing. That one of my young daughters Elizabeth loved to draw. Oh Congratulations on the Pregnancy Absolutely Beautiful News.!!!
Yeah, just recently saw it. Worth watching...it is super funny, just shy of the first one. They hardcore make fun of Canadians though (french canadians) and they sound awful. Being Canadian, I think they over did it, but thats what makes it funny I guess. I'd recommend watching it to anyone just as much as I recommend them to watch your channel. Solid gold you guys. Cheers!
I always thought the conch could only be eaten raw. It is really tough when cooked,eh! A Mayan dive "master" made conch ceveche with little raw cubes, cilantro, onion, lettuce, lime juice, tomato diced and ginger. Yum Rieley, you are a blessed man!
We need to take up a collection and get Riley a helmet, mouth guard, knee pads, elbow pads, shoulder pads, wrist guards, and 3 layers of bubble wrap. (and probably steel toed shoes)

Aquarius61 - Yeah ... I’m with you mate. Seeing Riley swinging that hammer around - with his accident-probed nature - was a tense moment, I must say.
Yeah no more weapons for captain Riley. :-D
Well, apparently, they snuggled at least once.
William Dykes *LOL* ... totally caught me off guard reading a comment or two!! Well done .... *Brilliant!!* 🤣
You guys have a great sense of humor, you make me laugh in every video. The description of what the conch tasted like was hilarious! Safe travels you two!
Riley, any chance you guys sail the St. Lawrence Seaway to Lake Michigan in the future? Would enjoy following that journey! Safe travels.
You guys are hilarious entertaining educational and just downright amusing.
Riley your suffering from the perfect life boredom you have it so good and you probably can't remember when your life sucked and was full of suffering ...hahaha ...most of us ugly old men would have cut off any appendage to be living your life hahaha you lucky dog do not forget to be grateful and just look around you and any ennui should dissipate immediately ...anyway you will soon be to busy to think haha...busy being the papa ...viva la Vagabonde CHEERS
C+Crook Book Bitter much?
Riles won the award for funniest man sailing the seas
Bubba Approves
that little guy .......i wouldn't worry about that little guy ! Super troopers
Your suppose to skin the conch. Then you beat the hell out of it till you can almost see through it. Conch when deep fried is golden brown and tender. Serve it with tarter sauce with lemon or lime.
I really enjoyed the addition of a local recipe. I love cooking channels, and when you mix them with sailing...well dang!
I so miss conch fritters and conch salad. I spent about six months living in Georgetown, Greater Exhuma and I just about lived on them. That and red beans and rice from the Two Turtles. I've always thought Conch tasted like clams, but a bit stronger. :)
Oh...by the way...just how many rancid, salty cat feet have you eaten man?
Why do I picture conch salad as being raw or did it just have that texture?
Ha, thumbs up as always, but in this ep especially for the Super Troopers ref.
Cheers!
So beautiful honest, had a blast watching and laughing ! Thanks for sharing your reality. Will be awesome parents!
Hi Guys, who told you to fry conchs, We in the Caribbean cook it in a soup, and will taste beautiful with spices. We never fry it.
Regards Chris
I always thought the conch could only be eaten raw. It is really tough when cooked,eh! A Mayan dive "master" made conch ceveche with little raw cubes, cilantro, onion, lettuce, lime juice, tomato diced and ginger. Yum Rieley, you are a blessed man!
Riles! Bilge loves you.
lol! ... very funny intro to conch. Thanks so much for your video!
I would do anything for some you and Riley bloopers , conche you try ?
After more than 1 year, today I managed to see all your episodes! 🍾You're great! Greetings from Naples (Italy)
Did Riley tell say “shouldn’t be a problem, you’re usually over cookin things? 🙀
Had a good laugh. I really enjoy your music selection.
here for the comments, have a good carribean trip you guys, awesome underwater footage of the conchs more spearfishing vids riley
Love this channel. It’s like a vacation from my reality here. Thank you for the vids.
We need to take up a collection and get Riley a helmet, mouth guard, knee pads, elbow pads, shoulder pads, wrist guards, and 3 layers of bubble wrap. (and probably steel toed shoes)
Mark - You forgot the “athletic cup” ... Hammers and crotches are not a good mix ... especially the way Riley swings! 🤪
Only 3 layers of bubble wrap?
How much do those suits that bomb disposal experts wear cost? Or a kevlar body suit :-)

Never had conch or conk or whatever, yet very adventurous so we'll see when I get there. Some great free diving lady 👍👍👌👊
