really enjoyed watching this episode :) sadly I dont really get the time to shoot my Mamiya RB67 and when I shoot it is so much easier and faster with the regular SLR. just keep goin with these shootings, maybe try shooting landscape or street too?
Awesome ... moody grimy london. Haven't been there since the (maybe before you were born) haven't shot medium format since I broke my Yashica twin lens. I was poor back then.
Great video but I wish you'd give us more of a commentary on what you're doing. The images are lovely but it'd be nice to know more about how you achieve them!
Nice work guys. I love the format of the video, the images you took are excellent. I look forward to more like this. I'm a BIG fan of natural light film photography portraits. So a big thumbs up from me.
woaw the photos inside are just incredible... great job with the light. The red of the sofa gives a good mood. In the next episode maybe a shooting in the nature with the snow can be cool !
Thank you! We just shot episode 003 a few days ago, which was filmed outside in the Hertfordshire countryside. But unfortunately there was no snow ;) Stay tuned!
Really enjoyed your video, your photographs are just beautiful, really lovely work! I also think its great that you've introduced us to XP2, its nice to see someone try something different for a change and I think the XP2 has a distinct feel to it. Great work and looking forward to more videos!
Really fkn love the tones of the interior portraits. I think that in the exterior ones you underexposed the portra film and that causes green shades in the shadows. Not quite a fan of that but great job in general. Fantastic work
Dude this is so refreshing as apposed to negative feedback. Love the analogue cameras and portrait work. Got abit bored of ppl shooting buildings and streets. Could u also let me kno the last location, looks great! Keep up the good work. Subscribed 👍
Thanks very much Phu! I'm personally much more into people and portraits, so you'll be seeing more of this kind of thing here in the future. The last location is top secret haha, but i can tell you it's in Wapping by the river. (I'm not actually sure of it's exact name though).
Eye Culture Magazine I thought it might b wapping! Love the whole portraits with analogue photography. If u like u can check out some of my work on my webpage also. 😁 www.phuhy.com
Beautiful! The indoor shots looked spot on and quite saturated for Portra 400! Yet to figure out how to do that on my Portra 400. How do you meter? Overexpose?
Hey Levi, thanks for the comment and support! Jonny uses a lab called "Eye Culture" (that's where we got the name for the channel!). It's located on Bethnal Green Road.
holy cow dude, those portraits rule. That fairly low-contrast look in the black and whites is exactly what I've been looking for lately, did you do anything special in development or metering or did you just shoot and develop at box speed?
Thank you! These were all pretty standard processes. I think XP2 plays a big part in achieving the look, as it's very different to HP5 or Tri-X (which are the only other black white films I've tried). XP2 tends to have a lot less contrast from my experience.
Thanks for the response! Were you metering for the shadows or mid-tones specifically, or just going with a general reading? I'm gonna have to try some XP2.
XP2 is a c-41 film, and thus not a true black & white film stock. The low-contrast look of the film attributes itself to that fact. However, you can achieve lower contrast effects with black & white film by doing something known as 'pulling' your film. For example, if the box speed is 400, you may shoot it at 200 or 100. effectively over exposing the film and thus resulting in lower contrast
Hi, how did you meter the shots of the model inside of the apartment? I've always heard to meter for the shadows with the dome pushed-in, but it looks like you metered for the highlights since your shadows are so dark in the first few images (they are beautiful, btw), unless you darkened the shadows in post.
Thank you! To be honest I just used a crappy app on my phone, which I'm guessing is metering the highlights. Or at least that's what I'm trying to do. But yes, the scans on XP2 usually come out quite flat for me, so i do a few tweaks in post. Including bringing the blacks down. Hope that's helpful!
Yeah, it makes sense that you meter for the highlights and darken the shadows in post. I'm one of those guys that goes crazy trying to figure out how a Photographer achieved a certain look. Thanks for your honesty!
Thank you! I bought mine from Ebay, which is probably your best bet. Try the Mamiya Sekor 110mm f/2.8 Lens, that's the one I have, but is also the only one I've ever tried. I'd also recommend trying a Pentax 67 which is similar to the Mamiya in terms of results, but is far more portable IMO. Our next video features both of these cameras so stay tuned!
@@radicaleyemag if you don't mind me asking, what do you use to scan them with, I just got a mamiya c220 and I'm new to film and I know I want digital copies and if I can do it myself I rather do it that way

how much post work do you do may i ask after you scan in? I've been messing with my Mamiya and Hasselblad 500cm for some time now and it seems that my consistency is off sometimes. I love the light and shadows in your shots. Thanks for the help.
I don't have a proper light meter at the moment, so my results can sometimes be a bit mixed. For the black and white images I'll usually just play with the contrast. These came out quite flat (which I think is common for XP2) so i wanted to boost them a little. I sometimes do very minor skin retouching, but often avoid this where possible. With Portra I like to focus on skin and getting the tone really nice, so will often play around to match my preference. - Hope that helps, and thanks for you kind words!
HI guys. Just stumbled across your channel. Some top work and very inspirational. Can I just ask how you go about getting hold of models. Are they friends or are you shouting out on social media etc. Any thoughts on this would be helpful. Cheers guys

borregodanet thank you for your kind words. We really appreciate it! I'm not sure if any of the shots in the video were taken at 1/60 (the viewfinder clip may have taken before I adjusted my camera settings). Excellent, your videos are pushing me towards the RZ67
It's a great camera, but I'm keen to get my hands in a Pentax 67ii ;)
