The mystery engine is a class 26 not a class 33 as the majority thinks. The class 33 has a full height middle window, unlike the class 26, which has the shorter one due to the double heading door (which was later replaced with a blanking plate because it was rarely if ever used). For reference, there's a class 33 parked in the siding at 27:13!

I purchased the blue one from Rails of Sheffield for £79-50. Great value. Had to buy the Dapol DCC Imperium decoder to make the lights work correctly.
With this decoder you get realistic light operation.
Front cab only, back cab only etc.
Rear lights can be turned off when pulling a load. Very clever. Well done Dapol.

That sounds much better William - if only they were that price all the time!! Sounds good too - I'll look into that! :D

These were called baby warships because they were a scaled down version of the original class 41 built by north british. The bachman warship class 42/43 was based on german design. Sorry if sounds like that i'm picking faults in you're review

Can't fault it, Dapol have made a very good realistic looking creation in 00 gauge of the class 22 diesel.
I'll certainly be getting one for the layout.

I think they are priced pretty reasonably as you get a small detailed loco and a fully detailed wagon with it. I have one on order from Hattons, should be soon here.

As a huge fan of BR (W)'s NBL locos I can't say how happy I am to hear the Baby Warship is not a lemon. Now that Dapol is putting out a second run of these stubby guys I will be happily purchasing one once I get the money. I already have KR Model's Class 41 so it will be nice to complete the set. They are small and reliable locos perfect for my modular layout.
Once again your marvelous reviews have influenced my purchasing power Sam! I can't thank you enough! :D

I’ve been curious about these locomotives and a model from Dapol so this was a welcomed review. The class 22 is a nice looking model. Might add it to the to buy list. The detail is very nice on this and a great runner. Thanks for reviewing this and uploading, Clint at Leila Central.

Dapol make superb models and am glad you got one . I have got exactly the same model as you were showing from Rails of Sheffield for the superb price of £79.99 . Had got one from Kernow Model Rail when the models first came out in the weathered BR blue livery and paid the full price for it . Love this model, solid and well built and such an interesting and unusual locomotive. Could not resist getting another one in different livery at the bargain price. Interesting and informative video from you again Sam and I knew you would be very pleased with your purchase. Another great purchase I got was a North British Class D600 Warship " Active " from Kernow Model Rail another superb model from the North British locomotive family which you may be interested in

Been thinking of getting a class 22 for a while, it's one of those lovely grimy "transition era" locos that saw the end of steam. They're so dinky, and I can't help but agree the spoked wheels bring the loco an air of character, just like old Soviet electric locos and EMUs have! Enjoyed the video Sam well done!

Great review Sam at £80 it's a steal at £150 it's just a bit too top heavy, having said that the detail is very good and it looks like it runs very well. Great to see it featuring in the little running session at the end there, keep up the good work.

Excellent review of the Dapol Class 22 aka ‘Baby Warship’ Sam 👍
I will be seeing the real Class 42 ‘Warship’ in action tomorrow during the Spa Valley Railway Diesel Gala and look forward to see this fantastic locomotive in action.
I know this isn’t the subject of this video, but I watch your video of the Bachmann LMS ‘Ivatt’ Class 2MT No.46521 and I went to see & ride the real version of the locomotive on the Swanage Railway.

This is one of my favourite diesels. I own the British Railway blue with yellow strip on both ends version Dapol did a very good job of it I got mine from Rails of Sheffield for seventy nine pounds and very happy with it. Sadly none of the Class 22 survived after been withdrawn in 1971 they were not the most lucky of diesels that's for sure. The company who built them went bust so no spare parts were made making it hard to maintain them hence there short working life . One diesel nearly got saved but was accidentally cut up after a mix up but their is plans to rebuild a new Class 22 and an original engine has been found. Fingers crossed we might see a Class 22 running again.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks a lot Peter - glad you were able to get one too - they really are excellent! It is such a shame that they had their service lives cut short - but the models serve as a nice reminder until they get a new one built!!

At around 6:00: I actually have not seen a class 22 in person, or model form. I do know that Great Northern (US) had one in the 60's or 70's though. Sadly it was either scraped, or deported, shortly before the merger with the Northern Pacific Railway, the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad into Burlington Northern (now BNSF).

Hi Sam , nice video . Haven’t had a good experience with Dapol over the last month. The class 73 came last month and opening the box there were no instructions, I contacted Hattons they said that was correct, I then rang Dapol who said that as they had been making the class 73 for the last ten years they didn’t need to include instructions including where to fit all accessories and how to service and remove the body . The person at Dapol was quite unconcerned and couldn’t see what the problem was !
This week the Dapol Class 52 Western arrived , before I fitted the numbers and nameplates on (Yes you have to do that ) I thought it would be best to run it in to make sure it was ok . After running in for an hour I fitted the numbers and nameplates , backed it on to its first train and off it went 90 secs later it came to standstill with the lights still working . So it’s gone back to Hattons . Dapol aren’t at the top of Christmas card list at the moment . David

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 ปีที่แล้ว

That sounds preposterous mate.... what on earth does having produced the model for 10 years have to do with not providing instructions for new buyers - if that's true, then that's very foolish of them! Sorry to hear you've had such a problem - oh dear!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hi Sam, just been looking over your review of the Dapol class 22 from a year ago, really nice review, these dapol class 22s are excellent little locos, yes a bit pricey for a small loco, but as you said in the review dapol know what there doing when it comes to diesels, Dapol class 52 Western is another excellent loco, and dare I say it, not that bad in the price department either for a large locomotive. Dapol probably make the ultimate ready to run class 52 western at the moment, for some reason dapol locos always seam to be very pleasing to the eye, so they must be getting something right, anyway nice review sam, be it an old one.!

Hi Sam! Yes, love the detail on this one & would see it as money well spent. Speaking of warships I took my new steamer to a hobby shop for repairs & almost as an afterthought I took my 2 OO diesels-Hornby 37 & Mainline Warship in for servicing as well-they’ve been idle for over a decade! Good news is they managed to reattach the whistle to my Britannia & get my diesels running smoothly as well- for $25 - hooray!! However he said the warship sounds as if it has a broken gear & parts no longer available, oh well will enjoy it while I can! Thanks for a great review, definitely on my Wishlist-David 👍👍

Just received my class 22 , As it was a prezzie I am not sure of the source, suspect my wife's favorite
    Rails of Sheffield.
Mine is in the blue livery , with the full yellow ends ,
Just inspected it from the box .
As usual Dapol have gone to town with the details.
I will be Running it in Tomorrow,
If it performs like my Dapol class 73
I will be more than happy ! .
The details on the class 73 are unbelievable, and I think that this will be the same.
Good Models of Diesels at a fair price.
I will be purchasing more !
    As a professional
Model maker in the Aircraft industry i know what i am looking at !!.
Forget all the messing about, and use the Grown up vernacular , no swearing obviously, and don't do any reviews on loan models, or even worse with free samples,
( not that I am saying that you have !!) .
And your testing channel will do even better !
    Yours , the engineer.

I've got one of these, love it. It's always a big plus when the loco remains in one piece when you take it from the box. I like a bit of trash and scrap around my railway, but not falling from my locomotives. The lights are really great, I do miss lighting when running my UK collection. Got mine on sale, a good bargain from Hatton's at the time. wish Dapol would do some more popular engines like maybe a class 20.

Sam, the class 22 dapol model you have just reviewed, reminds me of the class 29's that Hornby made in the 1980's. Very impressed with the class 22. More information about the u1s the engine you review no. 6060 was built in 1944 as a coal burner but turned in to a oil burner after the war it would have been more effective to replace with diesel but the railway company's where broke after the war so that was the solution. 6060 ran until 1960 and was given to the province of Alberta in 1980 and than restored. She currently is living at the alberta prire railroad but shes been out for the last few years under going major boiler restoration, there also a u1 in a museum not far from where I live.

Hi Sam, brilliant loco there! Dapol really seem to be the king of diesels- Bachmann are too expensive, Hornby can lack detail, Heljan locos fall apart, but these do everything as they should and look great! Just to let you know, SYP means Small Yellow Panel, relating to how much of the loco end has yellow. To start with BR only specified a small panel, but later it became Full Yellow Ends. Disc H/Code means that there are 4 discs fitted on each end to use, like lamps on a steam engine, to display what type of train the loco is pulling. In reality these fold out and have white insides with a small light on the bottom half

The winning answer in your mystery Diesel pole is wrong, it’s not a class 20. Class 20s have a single cab at one end. The Mystery diesel is a class 26 or 27 as they have near identical body’s. Class 33s also have the same body, but different windows and vents, and all 3 types slightly differ on vents and or lights locations. But they are near identical to the untrained eye. Under the skin however they are very different especially the class 33s.
I think it’s D5307 from pausing the video. But motion blur make it hard to see, however if I have got the number correct D5307 is a class 26.
    Great video again Sam.

Given that D63xx were notoriously unreliable, is the 2 year warranty a promise that they will send you another one if the model doesn't break down regularly like the prototype?
In the 1960s Playcraft made a model of the D6100 class and I see there are several available on e-bay for around a tenner. Playcraft were really children's toys rather than being aimed at modellers but it would be interesting to compare their model with the Dapol version. (D6100 were pretty much identical to D63xx from the outside).

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes actually - I'm sure they regretted that 2 year warranty after some of the issues their models have had (at least in my experience!)

Hi Sam, a very nice loco with a ton of detail.............Your comment about these locomotives being called "Baby Warships" I hadn't heard of before, you learn something new every day. However they don't look anything like a Class 42 Warship, but they do look like a Class 41, D600 Warship, like the Kernow exclusive model.................Could this be how they got their nicknames? Great video, best regards Dave.

Very nice review of a stumpy diesel. You probably heard this many times but, I would love if you reviewed a American diesel. I recommend one made by Bachman (most likely easier to get for you). I recommend a freight GP, SD, FA, RS, S, or F-unit. Or you could go for a passenger E-unit. Your choice.

I hope you find some more dapol diesels Sam. We need to find a feature of dapol diesels and identify the stereotype of dapols models. Bachmann and heljan have major stereotypes. It’s quite strange hearing of extinct diesels. I’m used to steam engines being extinct, but you don’t tend to think of their replacements being extinct too... but, I’m more of a steam fan, so it’s not like I’ve looked it up. Wonder how many extinct diesel classes there are?
