    Wow, thank you! I tried like 6 times last night and kept getting a small leak. I decided to hold until morning and find a TH-cam video to see what I was doing wrong. It was the damn cardboard! I definitely thought that was packaging garbage. Apparently not. I disassembled everything and added the cardboard ring in as you instructed and voila! No leaks! Thank you so much!

    Thanks, I didn't use enough putty and had a leak. You showed the right amount of putty yo use,glad I checked for leaks before I started hooking-up drain lins. Good tip on using the needle nose pliers.

    Thanks for the teaching. I didn't use enough putty the first time. The needle-nose plier tip worked but I tightened a pipe wrench on the handles of the pliers that jammed against the side of the sink and prevented the basket from spinning without a helper.

And I had trouble cutting the counter top hole big enough jigsaw wouldn't cut close enough so I finally figured it out I flipped counter top over then finished cutting .

    Awesome video! I have a question about the large strainer nut. How tight are you suppose to tighten it? I did it myself while holding the strainer with the ridged tool from the top. It never really tightened. The nut slipped teeth and it was loose until I got tired of turning the wrench. It didn't leak but I assume it will soon. Thanks for posting this video.

    • @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel

      Hi, I have always used a wrench to get the nut snugged up and the putty compressed. If you have someone press down on the sink basket as you tighten it, you may get a good seal.

      @@FIXITHomeImprovementChannel Thank you for replying. I have a pliers like yours, except small with only a max 1.5" mouth. So I'll do my best by hand. If it drips, I'll start looking for hacks/tips or try to find a buddy with a big wrench. Thank you again for taking the time to reply. Most guys don't, especially when they have as many subs as you do. :)

    • @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel
      @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, if your nut is smooth, you can replace it with a nut with tabs and that will give your pliers something to grab onto. You can grab the tabs on one side to tighten it. Here is an example www.homedepot.com/p/Glacier-Bay-Kitchen-Sink-Strainer-Nut-and-Washer-7049-900/207144224

    • @Kube_Dog
      @Kube_Dog 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For anyone reading this, it worked like he said. You do need to do more than hand tighten, but if you can't get your wrench around the whole nut because the wrench is too small, as long as your wrench can get some grip on a couple of tabs, you can get the nut snug enough. Don't forget to like and sub, because as you see, he took time to help a novice like me. Others I asked did not. A+

    • @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel

      Hi, plumbers putty will fill the space and shape itself to create a watertight seal, even if there are irregularities in the surface. You get a custom gasket.

    My sink strainer was leaking,, replace it with the type that has 3 screws underneath to tighten up, instead of screwing it on as shown here. Two advantages. One person can do it, do not need the tool to hold strainer because your not screwing it on. I will never use the screw on type again,,the washer turns and makes it leak sometimes. Bought from Home Depot, it is twice the weight, and cost 29.97.. worth every penny...

    I tightened the heck out of it with vice grips, which completely destroyed the paper gasket and deformed and pushed out one side of the rubber one??? so should I not tighten it that much or what?

    • @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel
      @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, did you grab the nut on one side only with the vice grips? If so, a large pair of adjustable pliers will spread the force more evenly on the nut. You can purchase a replacement rubber gasket and cardboard friction ring if you damaged them. Have someone hold the strainer with a sink strainer wrench to keep it in place while you tighten it down. You want it snug, but not overtightened.

      thank you so much for answering, sir. I really appreciate you.! Although your answer confuses me a little bit . How on earth would I grab the nut on only one side with vice grips?😂. Hi, if your nut has tabs for a pair of pliers to grab onto, and you only are grabbing 2 tabs on one side, it can put uneven pressure on the nut. Here is one style with tabs www.homedepot.com/p/Glacier-Bay-Kitchen-Sink-Strainer-Nut-and-Washer-7049-900/207144224

    You dont actually need putty, any water that manages to pass through the top of the drainer will become trapped and forced to enter the waste because of the rubber washer. It's amazing how many times iver seen these washers placed at the top incorrectly.

    Sorry but this does not work without the tool to hold the basket AND a helper. The job really sucks buy your self. Additionally, the plumbers putty sucks and does not seal most of the time. You will find small leaks from the threads on the bottom side. Best find an alternate method with silicone or other.

GOOD TIP about saving the cardboard friction ring, i would have thought it was just for packaging & thrown it away.

      @@FIXITHomeImprovementChannel Got some oatey stain free plumbers putty in my hand right now. It clearly says "Do not use on abs." You decide for yourself what that means.
      I get it. I was once thinking wtf. Why do they make 2 types of putty. Why don't they just make the 1 putty that is stain free. Then i did the research and the regular putty is better in all instances except 1. Staining. So if you aren't worried about staining, then use regular putty.
      It's okay. People make videos giving out bad advice all the time. Luckily there are people like me who catch this and make things right in the comment section. Much smarter people then you have made mistakes. Don't be so hard on yourself.

      Hi, I took training from Oatey. The gentleman who trained me said the Stain Free plumbers putty can be used on any surface for plumbing projects. The only problem with ABS is the finish can be discolored or stained. For sink baskets with ABS bodies, the ABS is not seen.
      The oil based plumbers putty can get absorbed into soft sink material and create discolored veins. If you have an old cultured marble sink, the oil based plumbers putty can actually break down the bond and cause the area around the drain to break away. New cultured marble uses a different material to prevent that.
