  • Before Hendrix, before Elvis, before rock music was even a thing, there was #LinkWray, the "father of the power chord", whose song #Rumble sold more than a million copies and was the starter's pistol for the entire pop music era. But Wray, like so many Native American musicians, from every conceivable genre, has largely been forgotten, his achievements assumed by his whiter successors.
In Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World, documentary makers Catherine Bainbridge and Alfonso Maiorana set out to reinstate these Native American trailblazers to their rightful place in the pop music pantheon, and for their efforts they won a Special Jury Prize for Masterful Storytelling at Sundance in addition to the HotDocs Audience Award. Featuring one of the most impressive line-ups you'll ever see in a musical documentary - including Quincy Jones, Iggy Pop, Steve Tyler and George Clinton - Rumble is the lively and eye-opening story of the Native American renegades who invented rock‘n'roll.

I think one reason there hasn't been a larger presence of Native Americans in mainstream music is because there hasn't been a Native American rooted music style that they were able to commercialize.

Jesse Ed Davis' slide playing on Taj Mahal's version of Statesboro Blues was the inspiration for Duane Allman to learn how to play slide

Steve Walsh, Lead Singer/Keyboardist for Kansas (Carry on Wayward Son, Dust in the Wind, Point of Know Return, People of the Southward, Cheyenne Anthem, etc), is a Native American (Adopted) but he doesn't make that known, like the gentleman in the Trailer says. Walsh is probably the most famous Native American Rocker in the World.

If you listen to the intro of "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath, there's a direct "link" back to "Rumble" by Link Wray with the drum pattern working with the guitar chords. You know Tony Iommi was listening intently to Link Wray

He has Choctaw ANCESTRY. He is not directly part Choctaw. His father was not HALF Choctaw. Howlin Wolf was Black, take a damn look at his pic.

I'm very curious as to why this otherwise very interesting, and good documentary, conveniently, happen to leave out, the proclaimed "king of Rock&Roll🗣🎶🎸"mostly by whites", the late Elvis Presley!🕺🎸
Elvis Presley also had Native American/ Cherokee blood from his Mother!🌹

It's interesting to note that almost every person who's family has been two generations or more is on some level of native American heritage.

Also Elvis Presley! The proclaimed King of rock&roll, by whites, was part Cherokee, from his Mother's heritage!
