People in the west cannot imagine the magnitude of adoration people in Eastern Europe have for Frank Zappa. He was a prophet of freedom when there was no freedom and he is the voice of warning whenever tyranny rears its ugly head. He and Lou Reed are considered very important people, not just artists, here in Hungary for that exact reason.

Yes and I’m proud to be a backer of its Kickstarter campaign. However, I wish all FZ fans could celebrate his genius together in person at the movie theater. Meanwhile, my local Regal multiplex ( the only one around) announced last week it is permanently closing due to COVID.
Why is this a good time? It's being released well after the election, so it can't hurt Trump, and during a COVID-19 peak so that many theaters are closed.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Frank for about 15 magical and terrifying minutes, in 1969, the same weekend as Woodstock. He told me that whenever and wherever he travelled, he brought with him a portable electric pencil sharpener, a box of HB pencils, and a pad of music paper. He was constantly either composing or devising arrangements, whether on the bus, or in the hotel room. That kind of work ethic leaves an impression on you.
I suspect his brain was wired in a particular way, that actually gave him satisfaction (ie. dopamine) to be so immersed in music. It might not have felt like work to him, but more like following his own interests in music composition and performance. He capitalized on his strengths, found something he realised he had a passion for and that he wouldn't get tired of.

In 1966, she was working a temp job at Canada's National Film Board, and the Mothers came by to use the recording studio for something, while they were in town for a gig at the long-gone New Penelope club. One of her co-workers came back from the cafeteria and told her she just *had* to see these "freaks". She dashed over and and spied Frank in the black Persian lamb coat he was wearing at the time, that often appeared in pics of the band. I was stunned and envious when she came home from work and told me. Of course she had no idea who "this Frank Zappa guy" was.
As someone with a degree in Music with a fair amount of study and analysis, I can predict Zappa will go down as among the greatest of the 20th century composers, right up there with Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Ives, Glass/Reich/Riley, and a few others that will be remembered down the centuries. We perceive the others as Very Serious Music compared to FZ, but that won't diminish the sheer quality and inventiveness of his oeuvre...much like we think of Mozart today, who also performed for the crowds using humorous references relevant to his time, but whom we also remember today as Very Serious Music.
There's a reason people still quote Frank Zappa today. Because this man could see the truth through all the bullshit around us and made us look at it too. This man is terribly missed and I am glad to see this documentary exists to make more people discovering and remembering him.
He said "politics is the entertainment branch of industry". He was not against governement, just against the activities that the governement was taking. He said something about politics beign about sales, and that governement was suposed to be about state, but the state was beign dominated by sales and the government by politics. Politics are bullshit on his words.

Everything a society does during peacetime ultimately serves the purpose of the security of the state, whatever it's called, art, entertainment, the economy, organized religion...its ALL in the service of maintaining social stability which, to the extent it *appears* to be working, serves that sense of security--in our case, of the military-industrial-congressional complex. The problem comes from not recognizing the link, and not being able to agree on the terms of 'success' of that apparent stability and the definition/meaning of the word 'security'. Frank, I think, perhaps without necessarily being conscious of it, tried to rise above these societal 'blind spots' and these convenient distinctions between politics and 'entertainment' that are forced upon us by our collective culture, to live his life as if they didn't exist. That is a demonstration of a kind of 'freedom' we should pay attention to. To us, who continue to make these distinctions, Zappa appears to be groundbreaking and genre-busting, involving himself in all of it, art, entertainment, the economy (being a business man), and yes, organized religion (as a critic). For me, Zappa is the embodiment of what American freedom, a very particular, individual-centric, yet communitarian, kind of 'freedom', *should* mean for post-industrial, democracy-respecting, Man.
I agree, I recorded it and I'm soooo glad I did. However, I am gutted that a week before this film they showed on Sky Arts channel "The Making of Freak Out". It was an excellent hour long documentary. I watched it but couldn't record it since I wasn't at home. Anyone know if that is available on DVD? There was a little bit of crossover between the two films, but not much....When I came across FZ as a teenager in '72 I instantly liked him but it took a few decades for me to realise what an amazing musician he was.

He embodied the American ideal of the rugged individualist, breaking new ground on the musical frontier.

He had some interesting advice for those pursuing a career in composition. "Make sure you have a day job." He said composers were forced to work in media to survive.
My true appreciation for music didn’t start until I was turned on to Sheik Yerbouti when I was 14 years old. Thanks to my older brother, the world of Zappa changed my life. He will go down in history as another musical genius like Beethoven, Mozart, Stravinsky, etc. He was that great. He pushed the envelope and redefined what music truly is. It’s more than just an art. It’s a way of being, it’s a way we find our place in the world, it’s mathematical. It’s so much more than notes being played. It’s the human experience. Frank’s encyclopedic knowledge of music and unending inspiration will always have the respect of our world’s greatest musicians for generations to come...
So happy that this is coming out. My dad showed me Zappa when I was 3 or 4. A truly amazing and unique musician, you can't even compare him to anyone else
One of my friends growing up was the son of a famous British rock guitarist from the '60's. We were like 13 or 14 in the late 80's, playing guitar at their house, and they had the most insane record collection. I listened to everything there; all the Sabbath records, Genesis, Floyd, etc, but one record stuck out most of all Studio Tan, and one song.. "The Adventures Of Greggery Peccary" has been stuck in my head ever since then... Then I got into all of his records and kept playing guitar.
They both stated that politicians were in a club that we weren't a part of. The documentary shows him saying that Congress only looks out for number 1, and their constituents aren't even number 2. (he emphasized "number 2," to make sure everyone got the joke.)

Saw Zappa at the Swing Auditorium Arena in San Bernardino California when I was stationed at George AFB, Victorville......what a fantastic concert, one of the best of many I have been to.
I saw many Frank Zappa concerts back in the 70s always a lot of fun, great musicianship from the whole band and Frank just played his ass off like always, great times.
It's about time for this. I saw Zappa and the Mothers play live exactly once, at the Fillmore East, and was a huge fan from the first day that I heard him on my local prog. rock station in the early '70's. He was a genius.
Never been a big fan of his music but I have always been a big fan of the man himself as there have been very few people as interesting as Frank Zappa.
I was 15 when Frank Zappa passed and I was devastated. Heard it on the morning news and immediately called my best friend, we were and remain total Zappaheads
I still maintain 35 years after first hearing Zappa he was and still is the epitome of Pythagorean musical development Frank was doing things with time signatures and harmony in the early 70s these kids with ableton are just discovering now. I don't know about that. He was probably the only "rock" musician to seriously study classical composers like Varèse and Stravinsky. Look at the score of the "Rite of Spring". Doesn't make him any less of a genius. As far as I know, no one else in rock could write for and conduct a symphony orchestra, maybe John Cale too.
But these "ableton" kids dont have the musical knowledge of Zappa, his intense rehersals and fearless public personna. Most of them end up doing hip hop or something.

So psyched for this!! Zappa was way ahead of his time in the 60s And throughout his life. I only got to see him 3 times between the beacon and the old pier 84 shows here in NY..but those were some of the most incredible concerts I've ever seen. This looks like it's gonna be such a great Documentary! Man I'm jumpin out of my skin I wanna see it so badly right now!! This is something to really look forward to though!
Looking forward to the interviews with Ruth, Ian, Bunk and the rest of them. These people should be interviewed more. We need more ambitious, in-depth Zappa documentaries, with minimal hype.

Just saw the entire film. Masterpiece! I blubbed and bawled at the end. Hard to imagine all he achieved in 52 years. Zappa has always been my favorite composer, recording artist, and guitarist but this documentary succeeded in capturing the real person.
I discovered Zappa when I was on a trip to Europe, in 1991specifically in Düsseldorf Germany, I haven’t stopped listening ever since!!! I’m 47 now!!! I can’t wait to watch a documentary about my favorite idol and influencer!!!!

Zappa was amazing. I stole a cd of Freak Out when i was about 14 because i thought the cover looked cool. Ended up drinking the Kool Aid and buying as much Zappa stuff as i could get my paws on after that. Dude was a musical genius and interesting individual. Curious what his thoughts on current events, pop culture and our political climate would be nowadays

I was at the filming of "Baby Snakes" at the Palladium in New York...It was Halloween 1977. Right before my 17th birthday in the 5th row. Anyone who's been there knows 5th row is like being on stage. There are no words to explain it. Went back the next year. It was phenomenal too. But nothing compares to your first Zappa show! In my opinion...Frank Zappa would have been a great President Dee Snyder Vice President Absolutely..they would have Rocked it! Rest Peacefully with 💕💓💕 Frank Forever & Always 🎶🌹🎶
I'm looking forward to seeing the doc. But without Chester Thompson, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Flo and Eddie et all I can't see how this could be definitive. I want to hear from Mahavishnu John McLachlan about their supposed rivalry. I want to hear from Tina Turner about recording the backing vocals on Montana. I want to hear more about Zappa the musician and less about Zappa the anti censorship crusader. I'm glad he testified before congress, but I'm not glad that his testimony continually eclipses his musical achievements.

If Zappa's legacy is going to controlled from beyond the grave, why can't it be Frank's dead hand rather than Gails? Frank would have wanted and honest documentary, warts and all, not a tightly curated hagiography.
Given the breadth and depth of Zappa's career and the sheer number of people and projects it's hard to see how any documentary less than 15 hours long could possibly be definitive. Really looking foward to the 15 hour cut😉
I've been saying for a while Sacha Baron Cohen needs to play the main character in a Frank Zappa movie seeing that he couldn't agree with the queen boys and left the Freddy mercury role he could play a great Frank Zappa!
People have told me for the longest time I should play Frank “Shrank” Zappa, Christopher Moltisanti, and a Baron-Cohen-esque character. Sometimes Josh Groban. I don’t know, you be the judge.
I had the privilege of seeing Zappa live in New York in December of 1976 on his wedding anniversary. There was no warm up band. He was on stage less than 5 minutes after the stated start time for the concert. (Anyone around in the ‘70s should know how unusual that respect for an audience was.) When Don Pardo came out in a white tux with tails, a top hat and cane to introduce “The Illinois Enema Bandit” we just about lost our minds. Even while he and Terry Bozzio were kicking a stuffed poodle around on stage, the sheer musicianship was astounding. About 3 years earlier, I recited the lyrics to “I Am The Slime” in English class when required to read a poem. Several classmates crapped on me (maybe they watched too much TV) but Mrs. Collins stepped up and defended my choice of a “poem”. Good for her! The idea of a 2020 Zappa documentary fills me with dread. However, hearing bits of “Peaches en Regalia” sprinkled in this preview gives me hope.
Ok now how does one go about finding it to watch. Streaming service like Netflix, Hulu etc? I mean a theatrical release would be sweet but with all that's going on not good time. Available on blu ray/DVD? Inquiring minds would love to know.

We've never needed the mind of FZ more than now. His clarity on confusing subjects never fails to impress me.

Gregg Pecc is my fav Zappa piece. I've listened to it a thousand times. Not many people seem to know of it.

Saw Zappa at the Swing Auditorium Arena in San Bernardino California when I was stationed at George AFB, Victorville......what a fantastic concert, one of the best of many I have been to.

I saw many Frank Zappa concerts back in the 70s always a lot of fun, great musicianship from the whole band and Frank just played his ass off like always, great times.

It's about time for this. I saw Zappa and the Mothers play live exactly once, at the Fillmore East, and was a huge fan from the first day that I heard him on my local prog. rock station in the early '70's. He was a genius.

Frank was doing things with time signatures and harmony in the early 70s these kids with ableton are just discovering now.

I don't know about that. He was probably the only "rock" musician to seriously study classical composers like Varèse and Stravinsky. Look at the score of the "Rite of Spring". Doesn't make him any less of a genius. As far as I know, no one else in rock could write for and conduct a symphony orchestra, maybe John Cale too.
But these "ableton" kids dont have the musical knowledge of Zappa, his intense rehersals and fearless public personna. Most of them end up doing hip hop or something.
I just watched this on another channel and am happy to watch it again. Aww, the scenes with Frank and his kids make my heart melt. :)

So psyched for this!! Zappa was way ahead of his time in the 60s And throughout his life. I only got to see him 3 times between the beacon and the old pier 84 shows here in NY..but those were some of the most incredible concerts I've ever seen. This looks like it's gonna be such a great Documentary! Man I'm jumpin out of my skin I wanna see it so badly right now!! This is something to really look forward to though!

in one of his interviews he said something like he created music he knew wouldn't sell ... of course he had his very specific audience ... got to love him
Just saw the entire film. Masterpiece! I blubbed and bawled at the end. Hard to imagine all he achieved in 52 years. Zappa has always been my favorite composer, recording artist, and guitarist but this documentary succeeded in capturing the real person.

Zappa was amazing. I stole a cd of Freak Out when i was about 14 because i thought the cover looked cool. Ended up drinking the Kool Aid and buying as much Zappa stuff as i could get my paws on after that. Dude was a musical genius and interesting individual. Curious what his thoughts on current events, pop culture and our political climate would be nowadays

I saw Zappa in 1980. It was the only concert I ever waited in line for and I have seen damn near all the big ones.

I was at the filming of "Baby Snakes" at the Palladium in New York...It was Halloween 1977. Right before my 17th birthday in the 5th row. Anyone who's been there knows 5th row is like being on stage. There are no words to explain it. Went back the next year. It was phenomenal too. But nothing compares to your first Zappa show! In my opinion...Frank Zappa would have been a great President Dee Snyder Vice President Absolutely..they would have Rocked it! Rest Peacefully with 💕💓💕 Frank Forever & Always 🎶🌹🎶

I'm looking forward to seeing the doc. But without Chester Thompson, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Flo and Eddie et all I can't see how this could be definitive. I want to hear from Mahavishnu John McLachlan about their supposed rivalry. I want to hear from Tina Turner about recording the backing vocals on Montana. I want to hear more about Zappa the musician and less about Zappa the anti censorship crusader. I'm glad he testified before congress, but I'm not glad that his testimony continually eclipses his musical achievements.

@@jackal59 I guess so. I can't help worry that this is another example of the Zappa Family Trust being gatekeepers though. If Zappa's legacy is going to controlled from beyond the grave, why can't it be Frank's dead hand rather than Gails? Frank would have wanted and honest documentary, warts and all, not a tightly curated hagiography.
Given the breadth and depth of Zappa's career and the sheer number of people and projects it's hard to see how any documentary less than 15 hours long could possibly be definitive. Really looking foward to the 15 hour cut😉

I had the privilege of seeing Zappa live in New York in December of 1976 on his wedding anniversary. There was no warm up band. He was on stage less than 5 minutes after the stated start time for the concert. (Anyone around in the ‘70s should know how unusual that respect for an audience was.) When Don Pardo came out in a white tux with tails, a top hat and cane to introduce “The Illinois Enema Bandit” we just about lost our minds. Even while he and Terry Bozzio were kicking a stuffed poodle around on stage, the sheer musicianship was astounding.
About 3 years earlier, I recited the lyrics to “I Am The Slime” in English class when required to read a poem. Several classmates crapped on me (maybe they watched too much TV) but Mrs. Collins stepped up and defended my choice of a “poem”. Good for her!
The idea of a 2020 Zappa documentary fills me with dread. However, hearing bits of “Peaches en Regalia” sprinkled in this preview gives me hope.
Ok now how does one go about finding it to watch. Streaming service like Netflix, Hulu etc? I mean a theatrical release would be sweet but with all that's going on not good time. Available on blu ray/DVD? Inquiring minds would love to know.
