Runcam Swift 2 Review | EACHINE WIZARD X220 CAMERA UPGRADE

  • The first upgrade I would recommend for your Eachine Wizard X220 is the camera. Everything else on the Wizard is at least half decent, but the camera is pretty poor. The other problem with the Wizard is that it has no method of battery monitoring. You could add vBat monitoring, if you have a Taranis, but what if you don't?
    The RunCam Swift 2 solves two problems at once! You get a pretty great camera, and you get built in OSD with voltage monitoring, without any complicated wiring or configuration.
    Buy the RunCam Swift 2 here: goo.gl/cCA31v

    For anybody wondering about the "Baseline" option: that adds a fixed(!) dotted horizon line to the OSD, comparable to the crosshairs the BF OSD adds. Yes, it is definitely static, not like a real horizon.
    The values 1-9 set the position, and for me only from 2 on up it started to be actually on screen.

    I was surprised the Vbat wasn't present on the Wizard but a buzzer and an extra wire on the Vbat pin and that's sorted, also the X6B receiver has Vbat so if you use a flysky radio you can put a voltage alarm on your radio fairly easily as well :)

    I updated my wizard to the runcam swift2 a few weeks ago and its great! one thing to note is that if you dont wire the vbat the osd can only show the max amount of the BEC. For the wizard it is 12v. so while that should work for 3s batteries it wont help much if you fly with 4s. so just wire the vbat right from the beginning.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, that's not true. You can move the solder bridge on the PDB to power the camera directly from vBAT. If you don't do this, then you are correct: the camera will just see 12v from the regulator. Honestly, running the additional vBAT line is a good idea because it is more accurate than reading the voltage from the input power to the camera.

    • @motofpv82
      @motofpv82 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i just noticed that if you just unplug the old camera of the wizard and plug in the swift2 with the same cable it just shows a max of 12v unless you wire the vbat cable.

    What size would you recommend for the wizard as banggood is selling 2.1 /2.3 /2.5mm. I'm guessing it's lense size. Any advice would be great.

      I would really like to know this too. My initial thought is the wider FOV the better, and 2.1mm is nearly 180 degrees!!! Is that too much fisheye and potentially nausea??

    The OSD allows you to set your voltage. While the OSD is showing hold the stick to the left till the volts flash. You can then set it to the correct voltage of your battery. I choose to leave the volts .2 low so I make sure I land before hurting my battery. Hope this helps people get their volt reading correct.

    I will start saying that I love your videos. learning a lot😉. I bought myself a x220 and I love it. right now I kind rely on my sense of time to know when to stop flying. probably getting less flying time than I could so this would be perfect for me. but my question is. on the introshot, what fov, lens did you order? OK so I read the rest of the comments, and there it was. 😅thanks anywho, love your vids, keep up the good work.

      For FOV, I would choose tiher 2.5 or 2.1. 2.1 has a bit more peripheral vision, 2.5 has a bit less fisheye.

    hi Joshua this is very similar ro foxeer arrow v2. on that you can adjust for the voltage error. Press and hold center botton of the joystick in to calibrate/adjust voltage value. i think the vbat is only needed if you wish to power the camera with a filtered smooth 12v to avoid osd showing 12v constantly. if using direct vbat for power there is no need for vbat.

    battery monitoring is a must! my question Is, when do I stop flying, on 3s and 4s? 3.5V per cell? when it's sags to minimum voltage or when it only rebounds to minimum voltage?

    Hi Joshua, the Foxeer Arrow V2 had the voltage monitoring in the same way as this cam does (has the vbat wire connection). The Arrow V1 had a way to do direct vbat connection, but required you to mod the case backplate (make a little hole) and solder a wire to a small pad on the board. Everyone hated the Arrow V1. Sounds like the Arrow V3 has a magnesium case? That should help with durability. I've switched over to RunCam myself because I was having so many durability issues with the Foxeer stuff. No weird FPV cam deaths since switching (I said weird, I did smash a swift to bits by smashing into a pole). Maybe my flying got better, but not by that much.
    For those who care, the RunCam Eagle has a magnesium case and what appears to be a nicer sensor, but also presents a bit of a conundrum with the 16:9 vs 4:3 view area decision you need to make and it has no vbat monitoring on it's OSD.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Eagle comes in a 4:3 version.

    • @CarsonBlack
      @CarsonBlack 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep, that's what I meant about making a decision. I've seen some comparisons (maybe it was even you) that seem to indicate that you're not getting enough vertical FOV with the 16:9. I have the 16:9 myself because I have the Dom V3. Gates looked kind of strangely "thin", but maybe that was more accurate? I don't know, but it's different than what we've become accustomed to.

    • @CarsonBlack
      @CarsonBlack 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, also on the 16:9 eagle you can't just use any replacement lens, you get a vignette (well you can see the sides of the lens). But know I'm way off the subject of this video.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. All I can say is, if yours is not accurate, calibrate your mental cutoff for when you stop flying.

  • @MikeAarset
    @MikeAarset 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder why they didn't include a voltage value to trigger an alert? Say you setup a value for 14 volts and when voltage hits 14V the on screen voltage flashes or something like that? That would have been cool :(

  • @andrewgoodall2183
    @andrewgoodall2183 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome tip, thank you. I was looking at supporting bits to go with the Eachine X220 Wizard, based on yours and other reviews, that I'm going to from a Syma X5C. I was a bit disappointed to read that the Wizard comes with a CMOS camera, and while for the money the TX03 I have is great, when the sunlight comes in a certain way it's not fit for FPV purpose.
    So, as I was also looking at low voltage alarm for the Wizard also, this was a no-brainer, so a very timely tip. I checked it against the Foxeer Arrow and went with the Runcam, due to better connectivity. All I need now is for Banggood to get more stock in, going like hot cakes, I guess.
    I have a question that someone could answer for me? I'll be on 1300mah 3S 11.1v batteries (as well as the 1500mah battery it comes with): What voltage do I want to land at so I don't overdrain my lipo? Thx for replies.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I land when I am sagging around 3.5 volts per cell, and I want to be resting at around 3.7 to 3.8 volts per cell when the battery recovers. If you don't fly very aggressively, you will need to land at a higher voltage because your battery won't be sagging very much. Both the final resting voltage and the minimum voltage under sag matter.

    I have tried the original RunCam Swift, and didn't like the colors I got (even after adjustments), or what I felt was a lot of fisheye. My other cameras don't look like this. Am I the only one bothered by this? I expected to see those two issues disappear with the Version 2, but it still looks the same. :(

  • @TheRCAddict

    TOTALLY off topic, but I just wanted to ask as it is bugging me lol. Why do we use phillips, hex, or star patterns of screws and such? I stripped a few hex heads, and couldn't help thinking why the industry standard isn't a triangle. The more I think about it I don't see any way to strip a tight fitting triangle. I know it is almost impossible to change the norm, but thought I would ask you lol.

      +The RCAddict I was thinking the same thing the other day when I stripped about 3 hex head screws on a new build. With such small connection points in the socket, I'm surprised they don't strip more often tbh. Triangle makes a lot of sense, or even a basic flathead screw design has more surface area and less likely to strip...

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Matt Dunsmore flathead is definitely not less likely to strip than hex. Personal experience.

    Joshua, I enjoy all of your videos even though I only have a small quad. On the other hand, I have several "Crawlers", most the information is a direct equivalent, not all. Most of the wiring for RunCam and others is geared straight for the quads including the wiring connections. Is there a source of connectors that you are able to wire directly into transmitters like Immersion RC 600mW 5.8ghz A/V Tx. I see a connector on the back of the Tx, but don't see any wiring diagram to help???"? Thanks

    • @JoshuaBardwell

      +Deserthunter Mike for connectors, you typically buy spares from the vendor. The connectors are generic industry connectors like pico blade or jst so you can buy them from an electronics supply. Like Digikey. And I have a Arrow v3 coming for review.
      Please know that a big part of what appears on my channel is simply what vendors volunteer to send me. I seldom go looking for a specific product because I usually have my hands pretty full making videos. But if stuff shows up in my mailbox, then hey, if it's cool I'll cover it. Until very recently, I didn't have any relationship with a Foxeer reseller, but RunCam had reached out to me. That's why you saw the RunCam HD2 for example. However I'm happy to say that a person at Surveilzone contacted me recently and so you will be seeing some Foxeer equipment on the channel coming soon.
      If there is a product that you think I should be covering, you can ask me about it, and if I agree it's cool, and if it fits into my schedule, then I'll pick it up and cover it. But if you really want to see a product on the channel, the best thing to do is to bug the manufacturer or a major reseller to send me one ;-)

      I think 2.5 or 2.1 are good choices. 2.5 has a little less fisheye effect, while 2.1 has a little more peripheral vision.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since this camera can be ordered with a 2.5mm lens, there is less incentive to swap to a GoPro. But the GoPro probably still gives a bit better image quality.

    • @Wicket_78
      @Wicket_78 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree! since most cameras come with better and wider FOV lenses these days it's less needed. However the GoPro lens is still better glass/optics so you will have a slightly better image quality so I think it's really up to the pilot if the extra ~$15 lens is worth it. I didn't bother personally on my new cameras.

    Hi Joshua I purchased 2 of these cameras and am having a problem with the voltage reading lower than it should be. Do you know if there is any way to calibrate the voltage on the swift2? • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no way to calibrate the voltage. You just have to mentally adjust. How far off is it? Usually it is like 0.2 volts at most.

    • @JoshuaBardwell

      Any of those could be good depending on your need. If you fly a lot of tight race tracks, then I think 2.1 is better. If you fly general freestyle, then 2.3 or 2.5. The type of lens matters too--how much fisheye and so forth.

    Hey Joshua, I made this mod myself but I wasn't able to get any audio out of the mic into my DVR on the Eachine D2 VR goggles. Is that headset even capable of audio? Or is it possible I screwed wiring or settings up. I have the audio line connected to the audio input on the VTX. I couldn't find a mic on / off option anywhere on the RunCam menus.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mic is always active as far as I know. I don't know if the goggles support audio though. One thing to keep in mind is you have to get the audio correct everywhere through the chain. So for example, if the vTX transmits audio on the left channel and the vRX is listening on the right channel, you won't get any audio.

    • @chrisfitzsimmons6410
      @chrisfitzsimmons6410 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply sir - I did a little further reading and discovered that the Eachine VR D2 is not actually wired up internally to support audio. The DVR audio pin isn't connected! for those who wish to change that I also found a helpful HW mod tutorial here - www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2751663-Enable-sound-recording-on-my-Eachine-VR-D2-goggles however, it should be noted that this only works for one antenna, not both.

    Hi Joshua,
    I have two questions:
    1.on my Wizard I solderred the cam to cam pads and vtx to vtx pad but moved the pad from 5v to 12v and not to vcc. will this work or will I get problems with 3s lipos?
    2. I have soldered vbat wire from swift2 to lipo+ on pdb but have still -0,2v on OSD. could you please advise how to fix it and have exact V reading on the OSD?
    thx

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gary Pota everything you did sounds correct. Soldering camera power to 12v is fine. When the battery goes below 12v the camera voltage will drop but the camera can operate down to 5v I think so it's no problem. Hooking up the vBat wire is necessary to get vBat working. But I don't know why you're getting - 0.2 volts.

    • @garypota1796
      @garypota1796 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua Bardwell, Hi and thanks for your answer. I tried it out today and everything worked fine. Swift 2 with 2.1mm os greate for me. also with 3s no problems. But one thing is still annoying. • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว
