Remember seeing my cousin playing this game back in the day. I was so scared back then. Played it years later and still got shivers down my spine. One of the all time game masterpieces!
Max payne 1 was the greatest 3rd shooter ever....For a most part "CONTROLLS" were Good (best)....just using keyboard and mouse....no need to "zoom" with rmb and use "hide system"....this was and still is a SOLID GAME....
The music alone is superb and the score for Max Payne 2 is made by Poets of the Fall. Late Goodbye along with the sad ending made cry like a baby...

Great video. Like watching some nostalgia gameplay while working. And commentary is really nice. One correction the game "Stronghold" is about fortress defence I think, and the one you wanted to say is "Stranglehold" (as in strangle + hold)
What a fun video. I'm a huge Max Payne 1 & 2 fan, beat the PC/Mac versions several times, even suffered through the PS2 ports with terrible frame rates. I've actually managed to not watch/read anything about Max Payne 3, so that I may go into it with a totally open mind. It hasn't been easy though as they've been teasing us with this one for a while now. I'm totally going to wait for the PC version, but I had forgotten it was even coming out soon. This really made my day!
I loved the dark, wintery atmosphere in this game, I got the same sort of feeling from Parasite Eve. It really made you feel like there was nowhere you could go and nobody to help you, nothing to keep you going but revenge.
I remember when Max Payne Demo was released, I still didn't have ADSL back than, but I was buying one of those PC gamer magazines which had demos/shareware CD with it. I Installed the Max Payne demo, locked the doors, turned off my phone so nobody could bother me, and ran the game :) I'll always remember it, and the excitement I felt when I started playing it... It was just EPIC, a masterpiece of game industry!
Hey Clint! You and other Max Payne fans might want to keep an eye on this upcoming movie I stumbled on called "Payne and Redemption." The plot sounds eerily similar to Max Payne and James McCaffrey is rumored to be on the cast. If it is a Max Payne movie, let's hope they do it right this time!
Rockstar games always have a great story and voice acting. Thanks for the memories! I played this when it was released and I remember enjoying it. The bullet time reminded me of the then very popular matrix scene from 3D Mark (99?). I never thought at the time that it would actually make it into a game as it was too much for any PC to handle in real time. Mind you, I never thought anything from 3DMark 99 was possible to control real time.
I think Max Payne is one of the most fluent TPS ever. You don't just control Max, you are Max. ...and I really respect games, that have so low system requirements and look so beautiful, even today (same thing with Warcraft III and No One Lives Forever). Will you ever review Heretic or Hexen? Thanks for all the great videos, I've learned lot's of rather useless interesting stuff ;)
Great game after all these years. Love the sniper bullet cam (not shown in the video), which was inspired by the Chow Yun Fat movie Full contact! Hell most of the movies Chow was in, except Anna and the king XD, has influenced this fantastic game! And as usual great vid! Keep up the great work Clint :)
It's a two week delay, which is actually pretty good by Rockstar standards in recent years. At least it's getting a PC port, unlike RDR. I don't really see it as a big deal at all.
i think this first episode was the best of all! had something thrilling and horroristic in it beside the action... that's why i think it was unique at it's time...
Pretty much the same. It doesn't notify you with an exclamation point if there's an important item nearby, and weapon selection is a little different. It has a dedicated melee/grenade key. You also get unlimited bullettime+shootdodge. The story is pretty weird too. I only recently played these games for the first time, so I guess they don't impress me like they would have in 2001, but they are fun.
The John Woo game is called Stranglehold, not the RTS game Stronghold. There is also F.E.A.R. and Timeshift with the bullet time concept, if we include FPS. Also, the console ports of Max Payne were altered because of the lack of RAM. For example, the subway station level shown here was divided into smaller levels that needed to load at certain points, so there would be a ceiling collapse or a door will lock to prevent you from backtracking to the beginning of the level.
I loved this game. It was SO dark, yet kinda quirky. "Lords and Ladies" and "Captain Baseball Bat Boy"... there were just so many little things all about. Incidentally, Max Payne was my last big box game. Came with a frickin' sweet mouse pad too.
the max payne series look amazing on pc, played 2 and my mind wasblown. ps2 was great at the time, but pc is the way to when replaying its well worth it. there is a deal going on humble bundle with rockstar, be sure to pick all of it up?
After watching this, I've decided to buy this off Stream. I remember my uncle had this game. The beginning of the game always scared the crap out of me. I was probably 7 years old or so at the time.
Such a great game. Speaking of, Wolfenstein is 20 years old now. You can play it through your browser, just something interesting. Back to Max. I rented it for the PS2 a few years after it was released and loved it. MP2 was pretty decent and I am glad they finally got back to MP3 after it being shelved for years though Max's "new" look was off, they fixed it. I have to wait until the end of the month to play it on the PC, but it may be worth a shot.
Awesome vid as usual Lgr ;) Nice card you have there. I use avermedia as well but for xbox 360. Of course your vids can't be compared to my puny ones. You're the best, keep up the good work ;)
This game looks epic, ive never really gotten round to checking out the max payne games which i now regret. Would you recommend this game? and are the system requirements demanding?
Great choice i was obsessed with this game on the PS2 and Max Payne 2 was even more badass. Rockstar very rarely make a bad game and the preview videos for number 3 look fuckin' boss so it should be great too.
That's one pricey piece of equipment O_o Looking forward to your review of it, though! Rather a shame I wouldn't be able to record Max Payne (cheaply, that is).
You are by far my favourite youtuber. In your LPs you only say something when necessary, you clearly know your shit and on top that you're pretty damn funny. Thanks for entertaining me, and please keep making videos!
Reminds me of Mafia, the graphics, the physics and voices, and indeed the voice acting sounds similar in both what they say, and how they say it. I've yet to play this game. Played it breifly on the PS2, but I should really get it for PC sometime..
Remember I played the shit out of this game at a local gamestore. They had a top-of-the line computer which you could play all the latest games on. In the end they removed it because people just went there to play on it. :P But... anyway.. I remember that scene were Max is driving the subway train through that wood panel. I was really amazed with the graphics in that scene.
Love Max Payne 1 and 2.....just got 3 and while I am a bit disappointed in all the bugs I've encountered, it is otherwise a great sequel. Hard, but great. Ever going to do a Max Payne 3 video?
remember the matrix mod?? all those weapons! extra kung fu moves!! dojo room!! tbh i think it was a whole bunch of mods all flung into one. but it was great.
I am playing through the first game for the last few months. Perhaps because I missed it on release and only got it last year, but I can't say I am having a great fun with it. I like the whole atmosphere but...I don't know.
Bruce Willis would have been a good Max Payne. Just look at his performance in Sin City. Not saying he would have saved that turd of a movie but he would have been a better Max Payne than Marky Mark
Got to admit the slow bullet travel times of MP1 really makes it hard to play. That and the auto-balancing system which will result in baddies that can withstand 2 shotgun blasts to the skull.
Clint what resolution and version of Windows are you playing this on? Doesn't seem to show any stretching symptoms of the widescreen hacks for Max Payne.
Okay, so the first one records just fine with Fraps (I'm assuming) based on what I see here. So why can't I get the second one to record above 15 FPS with Fraps on? Do you have that issue?
Are you going to do an' LGR Plays' of Max Payne 2 as well? I can already see the snarky commentary around Mona's shower scene and her and Max's....'hot and bothered' scene. XD
Remember seeing my cousin playing this game back in the day. I was so scared back then. Played it years later and still got shivers down my spine. One of the all time game masterpieces!
kind of sad that a lot o the graphical detail put into this game still aren't exactly commonplace today...
Back then those graphics were so fucking mind blowing.
Me too... Plus the atmosphere and lighting are the best Remedy's done to date...
Max payne 1 was the greatest 3rd shooter ever....For a most part "CONTROLLS" were Good (best)....just using keyboard and mouse....no need to "zoom" with rmb and use "hide system"....this was and still is a SOLID GAME....
lol i remember all the lines from this game as well. the voices of the bad guys are so great. "WHAACK THE SUCKA"
The music alone is superb and the score for Max Payne 2 is made by Poets of the Fall. Late Goodbye along with the sad ending made cry like a baby...
Great video. Like watching some nostalgia gameplay while working. And commentary is really nice. One correction the game "Stronghold" is about fortress defence I think, and the one you wanted to say is "Stranglehold" (as in strangle + hold)

wow. i can't believe this game is so old now. still brilliant. i play it occasionally now still. a classic.
I loved the dark, wintery atmosphere in this game, I got the same sort of feeling from Parasite Eve. It really made you feel like there was nowhere you could go and nobody to help you, nothing to keep you going but revenge.

Balls yeah I have. Man, that was one of the mods that really got me into modding games more seriously back then.
Had a 92FS INOX a few years back, yeah. Lovely gun.

I never actually did play this game. It looks pretty good, and the graphics still seem to hold up.
In my opinion, the best 3rd person shooter ever made. The gunplay & the atmosphere is just phenomenal.
Looks at its best with upscaled textures along with the plain detail textures.
Eating Painkillers keeps Payne alive xD
I completed this game about 12 times...loved it...one of the greatest games ever...'Mirrors are more fun than television'
I started watching LGR much later than this but was really hoping that he'd covered Max Payne. Not disappointed!
I still play this game every couple of years. The graphics hold up well. The atmosphere is great.
It's good to see this game again. I played it when I was about 8 years old so I don't remember much about it.
The John Woo game was "Strangehold"
It was also far worse than Max Payne.
Great game after all these years. Love the sniper bullet cam (not shown in the video), which was inspired by the Chow Yun Fat movie Full contact! i used to play alot of this game when i was young on xbox.. interesting game but i stuck somewhere near chap 2 or 3 cant remember so well
4:47
There is. When you shoot the gas tanks under the lockers it blows a hole in the wall or opens a door on the right in that hallway.
Why is Max gloomy and depressing in MP3 when he got over his dead wife and daughter in MP2?
i think this first episode was the best of all! had something thrilling and horroristic in it beside the action... that's why i think it was unique at it's time...
found this at a local pawn shop last week for the ps2 ahh the memories they came flooding back
thanks for uploading this. It rocked my
little mind back in the day.
Pretty much the same. It doesn't notify you with an exclamation point if there's an important item nearby, and weapon selection is a little different. It has a dedicated melee/grenade key. I knew acer had to be evil, its the only thing that explains the prices!
Freakin' love this game but for me Max Payne 2 was the best of the 3. Max Payne 2 mods make it replayable so many times.
The mods are amazing. Payne Effects is one of my favs. I would say the story and atmosphere of the first one were a lot better though
The John Woo game is called Stranglehold, not the RTS game Stronghold. There is also F.E.A.R. and Timeshift with the bullet time concept, if we include FPS. I remember the fire level in this game used to kill my PC. Great game!
pretty amazing that the graphics are still pretty good 10_ years later
Max Payne was well taken care of. Rockstar took the wheel pretty well at making Max Payne 3 and tieing it with the story.
the max payne series look amazing on pc, played 2 and my mind wasblown. ps2 was great at the time, but pc is the way to when replaying its well worth it. there is a deal going on humble bundle with rockstar, be sure to pick all of it up?

MAx Payne looks good after all these years! I played it on PC too. It was on 4 discs!
Awesome vid as usual Lgr ;)
Nice card you have there. I use avermedia as well but for xbox 360. Of course your vids can't be compared to my puny ones. You're the best, keep up the good work ;)
yeah keep on with these lgr plays! :D
one thing though, have you ever thought of making a lgr plays - the sims 3? would be interesting and fun
i have to say its so awsome to see an video of you apear efry day almost its awsome YOUR AWSOME THIS IS AWSOME! KEEP UP THE AWSOME LAZY WORK!
Summer vacation and LGR videos makes me a happy camper.
Dude... I loved this game. I think i was 12-13, so i didnt give a crap the story
still love the face texture on Max
This game looks epic, ive never really gotten round to checking out the max payne games which i now regret. Would you recommend this game? and are the system requirements demanding?
Awesome game, I freaking love it. Also awesome ending. ;)
Great choice i was obsessed with this game on the PS2 and Max Payne 2 was even more badass.

I had 1 and 2 on the PS2 when I was 11 or 12 but I don't remember them too much. I bought them on Steam forever ago but I haven't played them yet
Love our mutual love of awesome games such as this gem. Hope you get your hands on Brutal Doom. It is so much fun.
Yes! Thank you, Clint! :)
Reminds me of Mafia, the graphics, the physics and voices, and indeed the voice acting sounds similar in both what they say, and how they say it. I've yet to play this game. Played it breifly on the PS2, but I should really get it for PC sometime..
One of the most quotable video games of all time. I can seriously go all day quoting this sucker
This game has a special place in my heart :D
Remember I played the shit out of this game at a local gamestore. They had a top-of-the line computer which you could play all the latest games on. In the end they removed it because people just went there to play on it. :P
But... anyway.. I remember that scene were Max is driving the subway train through that wood panel. I was really amazed with the graphics in that scene.
this game looks really impressive for its age! i only played the second game when i was younger
Another game with bullet time type is the fps Chaser. (available cheap from gog btw).
Which when released was quite a good looking game too.
Oh man, I miss this game.
Really awesome game, played the hell out of it back in the days :)
i rember geting this game, it was a good day that went bad after i got it, but that still did not stop me from playing it :)
I LOVED Crush the Castle. So addictive! Didn't find Angry Birds anywhere near as fun.
:D - great playthrough, thank you for doing! Great to see this game!
one of my favourite game ever.what is the system spec in your pc????
Great game. Good times back in the day.
Dude, what do you think of no one lives forever and its sequel? I'd love to see you take on a mission or two of NOLF.
Btw, there were other lesser known bullet-time games. You had the Dead to Rights series, and the various Matrix-games,
I am playing through the first game for the last few months. Perhaps because I missed it on release and only got it last year, but I can't say I am having a great fun with it. I like the whole atmosphere but...I don't know.
I so cant wait to get Max Payne 1 and 2!
i love max payne too. ive only really played the ps2 version though, never looked at the pc version until now >_>
Bruce Willis would have been a good Max Payne. Just look at his performance in Sin City. Not saying he would have saved that turd of a movie but he would have been a better Max Payne than Marky Mark
Honestly, Mark wasn't that bad of a choice... It was the whole rest of the movie that let it down.
Mark Wahlberg, I don't know of a single action movie he was good in...
Strangely enough, in the sequel Max Payne and Mona Sax were both modelled on Bruce Willis and Demi Moore respectively
i really love that Crazy Dream Mission
Love Max Payne. Hope that MP3 will be good.
from what i have heard is its being made along side the console versions and wont be a port at all
Did you have to download the sound fix? Great game, looks good even today.
Story telling voice of Max is the best !!!
The gameboy advance version is surprisingly impressive.
Vampire Bloodlines has a sleazy brothel like that where they have holes in the walls plus cameras; it's in China Town, which is late in the game.
26:10 ps2 the matrix games, i know they are bad, mostly the first one, but hey!....
I think it really depends on the popularity of the game. If it's heavily popular then a port might be done.
i love how Rockstar Games are always soo surreal, especially compared to Sims, which I got stuck on for a good long time back then.
Got to admit the slow bullet travel times of MP1 really makes it hard to play. That and the auto-balancing system which will result in baddies that can withstand 2 shotgun blasts to the skull.
Clint what resolution and version of Windows are you playing this on?
Doesn't seem to show any stretching symptoms of the widescreen hacks for Max Payne.
you used the music from the novel cutscenes in your Depht dwellers review, didn't you
I knew that grenade was coming too, and was wondering where it was.
Dude this game seems way better than the movie lol, I wish I played the game first. However, I did like the way the movie looked...
If anything he looks MORE like 'Max Payne', seeing as he's modeled after James McCaffrey himself. Now the face and the voice are one and the same!
XD
Am I the only one who sort of hears the 80s Transformers' transformation sound when Max Payne picks up pills?
I find it to be highly enjoyable, especially with the kung fu mod
Times when Max Payne still was made in Finland my home country :)
I love this game. I have it for the PC and PS2, the PC had much better controls.
Found Max Payne 2 in game station last week for £1.99!!! Epic price epic game!
