It is a very nice but short video. Many people do not know that the 'Kaattu Koil' or the Forest Church was built by the Portuguese sailors who landed here in AD 1515. There was a terrible storm off the coast of Madras. The sailors prayed to Mother Mary and a light from the land guided the ship to the shore and the sailors were saved. They built the Church which is called the Luz(light in Portuguese) Church. There was another church built on what is today the Marina Beach. This was the church of the Mother of God. In Portuguese, it is called Madre di Dios. This name later corrupted to Madras according to some sources. A British governor of Madras named the beach 'Marina' beach, which is supposed to mean a promenade in the Italian language. But, traditionally, the beach was associated with Mother Mary. In Portuguese and Spanish, Marina always means Mary, the Mother of God. Madras has a rare distinction of being host to the first miracle in India( AD 1515) and its name being derived from 'Madre di Dios' or Mother of God. The Garrison Church, adjacent to the OTA(Officers Training Academy), St. Thomas Mount, was built and dedicated to the Royal British Artillery. This church is worth visiting.
Very interesting and informative video bro, Its so amazing to know that our Churches carry a rich and beautiful history behind them. Thanks to you and I believe you'd take us to a lot of places in future videos through your "Footboard Travels"😁
Saint Thomas who is one of the direct 12 disciples and an apostle came to India in AD 52 and Mylapore in AD 68. He achieved the martyrdom in AD 72. Stabbed in the now St. Thomas mount but passed away somewhere near the present Santhome area. The Santhome church was actully a Cathedral (where Bishop is the head) and raised to the Basilica (minor) status by the Pope knowing the great history behind its construction. It is only one of the three in the world that was constructed on the tomb of the direct disciples of Jesus himself. 1. None other than the St. Peter's basilica in Vatican city, 2. St. Thomas basilica in Mylapore, Chennai and 3. Saint James the great Cathedral known as Santiago de compostela Cathedral in Galicia, Spain. It is believed that the Prophet Muhammad's close companion Malik bin Deenar reached western shores of India in 629 AD and the mosque built by him is existing even until now. We know lord Buddha's history preceding these two major religions (a few centuries before Christ) in the Northern India. Our culturally rich heritage and acceptance all kinds of faith is unmatched by any other country in the world.
