I was too young to see this movie in the theater, but I can't count how many times I watched in on HBO and wore out VHS tapes watching it with friends. We all gladly watched it together whenever a rookie came along.
When Spielberg commissioned this film he was expecting a fun and goofy teen movie with a Karate Kid type style. Instead he got a dark and surreal Tangerine Dream themed Risky Business esque masterpiece. Which of course he hated and intentionally tanked

Years later I had the opportunity to go to a friend's younger brother's pep rally in Kentucky. What an eye opener! I had flashbacks of this scene. I couldn't believe my eyes. God bless America
Yeah man, pep rallies were frightening. This is a brilliant parody and exposes the underlying pathos of them. Indoctrinating, barbaric and group mentality at it's finest. I used to mindlessly participate in them and I look back now and can't believe I did. There was the option to sit them out in the library but those were considered the anti-social people. Looking back they were the sanest of the school! As far as I know, this is the only time a pep rally has been done in film. I'm surprised they weren't exposed more often.
Most of the actors were in their mid to late 20's, but almost everyone around them were actual 1986 high school students. This was filmed in a Utah high school with the student body as extras. Also, notice how thin almost everyone is.
The fact that Jerry looks 30 drags this movie down for me a notch or two. Even by 80s movies standards, the actor looked way too old to play a teenager.
It's a common Hollywood casting practice to hire somewhat older actors and extras to play high school students. It's so that people don't think they're exploiting teenagers with adult stuff.

That's some kind of intense pep rally.

I need to immediately start working out so I can wear a long sleeved thermal shirt under a t-shirt with tight 80s jeans
@T OB How could you not know what a thermal shirt is? Do you have eyeballs? Access to Google?
