Completely agree. Marooned was not much of anything, except scaring the public about The Space program. What an Imagination Anderson had. Imagine a European Space program, a serious one in competition with NASA and Eastern Bloc Countries for the exploration and Colonization of space, made for great inspirational Sci-Fi story. Would have been an even better reality.

BS. The FX are typical Gerry Anderson production FX, where models look like toys. Meddings models in "Superman" were obvious, too... I saw better in model train layouts...
I'm surprised that they used live actors...

The absolute showstopper for me was when Col. and Mrs. Ross arrived at Eurosec in the plane that transformed into its own tarmac shuttle that then rolled them to the gate. When the Rosses stepped out they looked like gorgeous movie stars. Then immediately we find out they’re miserable. Just brilliant!

An excellent review of a wonderful movie. The suggestion that the universe will somehow negate any evidence of a parallel world (demonstrated by what happened to Webb and his organization) was -- in no small part owing to Ross' words ringing in Webb's head -- is haunting to this day. A beautiful production on nearly all accounts. Marooned did not hold a candle to Doppelgangers effects!

It's a great movie that I would like to have seen in the cinema. It looks and sounds absolutely beautiful, and the acting is as good as anything you could see - the suspension of disbelief is upheld throughout. I have always had one, tiny quibble, though - after 'The Dove' crashes, the astronauts are rescued by a helijet and a man in heavy protective gear, that makes him appear alien (the late Anthony Chinn), who says he's working for 'Ulan Bator Air-Sea Rescue'. Now, seeing as Ulan Bator is the capital of Mongolia, and Mongolia is definitely land-locked, they couldn't have been very busy, could they?

This wonderfully put together primer finally inspired me to watch Doppelganger. Having been a fan of Anderson's puppet shows for years, the prospect of seeing an advancement of the model effects intrigued me. So I took the plunge and finally tried out some of Century 21's live action work and I'm glad I did. The movie isn't perfect, but with the effects, Barry Gray's ethereal score, and some intriguing ideas, it really captured my attention.
These primers in general are phenomenal, easily digestible without skimping on the interesting nitty gritty details. The editing is top notch as well, choosing the right clips to complement the narration. Great stuff, and very enlightening.

Well done. Fate/God/universal symmetry, something is at work to keep the doppelgangers/multiverses from knowing of the others existence. Jason's charge at the mirror as Glen's unheard words in his ears expressed that mechanism beautifully! The moment Glen attempted to land at Eurosec with evidence he dies; the moment of revelation to the old, disgraced Jason, he dies. Enforced symmetry. Haunting stuff.

I just watched it last night. It is a bit of a stretch I agree. Like a lot of Anderson stuff, it is a great idea needing tight story and scripting. But gee, it looks dazzling. Roy Thinnes looks like a cross between Paul Newman and Steve McQueen. His, then wife and the other leading lady are quite stunning. Ed Bishop is great and especially good is Georgie Sewell, wonderfully menacing. I truly enjoyed watching it again after many years.

BTW, did you know that when released in the UK, not only was the film know as “Doppelganger” but he lead actor was Ian Hendry, with the 2nd billing going to Roy Thinnes (which you can see in the trailer you showed). However, when released in North America the long and rather clumsy “Journey to the Far Side of the Sun” was used and now Roy Thinnes received top billing and 2nd billing was now Ian Hendry.

Twilight Zone had a couple of episodes where astronauts return to earth and bizarre events take place. Those were compelling stories that still work even today. Star Trek had a reverse universe episode that was very good. I think if Journey had a reversal of good and evil, and some exploration of what that means for the security of both worlds, it could have been a much more compelling story. However, since ST had already been there and done that, I can see why it was not considered.

They reused a lot of props, ensemble actors for their weekly series UFO, even down to the exciting spinball teletype that used to wow us as real life high tech in 1970.
The cars the SHADO staff drove were from the movie, thus left hand drive to drive on the right side of the road in England in UFO.

It's a great film and it's original title 'Doppelgänger' is really what the film's about. It's should only be known as that to avoid confusion. It's a great example of German Expressionist-Film Noir-Neo Noir storytelling. I think the U.S. 'commercial' title really confused people as it's sounds like you will see a 'standard' sci-fi film about a 'journey to the sun', like it's going to be a literal film. I think the US distributors (as they often do) underestimate the capacity of ordinary people to understand story concepts, so they feel this need to 'simplify' and make it more commercial, thus ruining the film. But it's a classic!

I enjoy watching it still a brilliant film too such a shame Patrick Wymark died in 1970 the year after the film was in the cinemas a great cast in the film and I know some of them appeared in UFO and I think this was in the cinemas in between the 13 episodes of the Secret Service.

Saw this movie theatrically in widescreen CinemaScope in Pécs, Hungary. Either in 1969 or early 1970. All I remember from it today (May 2024) is that it was pretty boring. But I wouldn't mind watching it anew now.

Superb movie. Love the production, direction and especially the acting. However I always felt there was 10 mins missing from the movie. Especially the tie in back story of Col Ross's promiscuous wife and Arlo our Eurosec PR character and the triangle of the Trio. This movie and UFO were brilliantly produced pieces that stand the test of time. Gerry and Silvia's finest works imo.

Watch that movie few years ago. I like how Gerry Anderson imagined the future technology.
It starts with a spy going into a safe through several security gates, guards, and keys. The spy retrieves a printed document and slowly turn pages. Later, the spy in his hotel room, removes his eyeball, retreive a microfilm, develop it. Very realistic. But totally out of it space-time continuum. I like this old futuristic vision that went totally wrong about technology.

@@colinp2238 Yes, the moonbase female uniforms were particularly uplifting. As for Gabrielle Drake what can one say after seeing her sitting there wearing that purple hair and silver uniform, except boy oh boy oh boy. 💜💜
Sylvia Anderson is another female for whom we should be very grateful, especially when one considers how particularly uplifting some of her inputs and influences actually were. 😊😊

    • @Rhubba
      @Rhubba 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The Dove 2 crashes because the electrical polarity is reversed between our world and the mirror one: Ross simply can't pull out of the dive as his craft was rendered inoperable after the short circuit when he tried to dock the Dove with the mother ship. The only person who survives the crash and knows about the mirror world is Jason Webb, who is mentally broken by the experience and ends up old and alone in a hospice where the knowledge of the two worlds eats away at him, resulting in his charge at the mirror.

I've always had a soft spot for this movie. But am always let down when its realized the printings in reverse. Would've much preferred a slower reveal that everyone on the opposite planet is an actual mirror image of themselves. IE; Jason gets Glenn to sign something and remarks 'Strange, I always thought you were left handed?' And when Glenn gets back with his wife at home, a distinguishing birthmark or mole on her person is suddenly on the opposite side. Little things like that making Glenn realize he is on the other planet. And it is too bad it was released when it was, as it was up against some pretty fierce competition. plus the actual landing on the moon.

Great video Chris. Just to correct one error, the movie was not nominated for an Oscar. Academy records show the only competition to Marooned that year was Krakatoa - East of Java. For some reason Gerry Anderson liked to be aggrieved about losing out at the ceremony, but he wasn't there, and neither was the film. One of his many tall tales.
