  • The history of this mountain is that "early settlers of this area found the land to be of poor quality for agricultural use" and "the names of previous owners are unknown" according to The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. The miles of stonework on this mountain have been credited to these unknown farmers. Another possibility is that this is the work of the people who have lived on the land since the end of the ice age, the Abenaki. The location of the possible serpent effigy is next to the series of waterfalls and unique exposed bedrock. The bedrock and water are both connections to the underworld, the home of the Great Horned Serpent.

It’s interesting that they found the time to put so much work into these. I would think they would be busy with basic survival and routine ceremonial activities.

The Serpent still functions, limiting the flood waters. The power of the Great Serpent is infused into the stone structure, making it "come alive."
