He worked in the mail room at TNN at that time, and it appeared that he was asked to come down into the audience to sing as a filler for the breaks/intermissions in the tapings of the actual contestants' performances... those of us who had passed earlier auditions to be on the show. It gave him an excellent way, as an unknown at that time, to gain an opportunity to showcase himself every chance he was given by the TNN folks.
I watched him sing this live from the backstage, I was a contestant on this episode of that show, You Can Be A Star. He was just known as Al then.
Was he just in the audience? Was he not a contestant?
