The lapping comments were a hilarious trip down memory lane. Back in the day I used to lap my Talley mounts for my Zeiss scopes with a 1” cold roll, vise grips and valve grinding compound😂
My week can continue now, TPH Podcast has aired. I look forward to the common sense crap talking that is conveyed from you 2. Thank you, keep up the good work boys!
My Howa mini action has the Remington 700 style action so I use scope rings that mount directly to the action. Less stacking of tolerances, less weight, and can mount lower if needed. Also the thing with the parallax switching is awesome, and I feels like what March did with the dual focal plane scopes.
If you’ve got a cant in your mount, not to be confused with a hitch in your Getty up, then I believe you should level your crosshairs to the mount. Likely there won’t be a way to level the mount to the gun so make sure you have a bubble or some other means to check your level when shooting long range for your caliber.
Yeah, they shoulda threw an asterisk in there, especially 'cause they did spend a decent amount of time talking about having built in moa bases/mount. Kinda useless leveling to your point of aim if your scope reticle won't work right at distance because of your moa base.
Oil and LocTight are lubricants that change torque values. Clean the manufacturing oil off bolts before torqueing. Engine builders have know this for decades.
Lubricants give more accurate torque application. Use bolts as provided, that's how they were intended to be used, unless the installation manual specifies otherwise.
I absolutely made the foot/lbs vs inch/lbs mistake before. I returned the torque wrench and told em it was defective after setting it to 18 ft/lbs to mount my Vortex scope. Well, vortex spec is 18 inch/lbs not foot/lbs… Snapped that shit off. It was my first scope mounting experience… Live and you learn I reckon. I’ve since done better.
I know this is late but what do you think of the Ruger dovetail/recoil lug they have machined in the receiver of some of their rifles like the gunsite scout and Hawkeye?
Agreed. My communication skills suck. Hahah. My point is trusting rail/ drilled mount holes are square to bore is a risk. Yes its small butt its manufacturing. . If I set scope in ring base and it feels off. I very lightly lapped them to confirm square. (Very light to me is minimal compound 2 strokes) just to see if finish came off evenly.
1/2 torque, 3/4, full. Clean and lubricate with manufacturers spec fluid (oil, loctite, etc) If they tell you to use something or a high enough torque that destroys your hardware, they're a shit manufacturer.
I really tried to get interested in this video but the conversation caused me to get angry due to its uselessness. Topic could have been interesting but not from this channel. To tedious to stay attentive and unbelievable that he had notes to follow.

Your podcast makes me want to start over with all my rifles and scopes

We appreciate the kind words.

Maybe I missed it but one thing I wish you would have touched on is Precision QD mounts, would love to hear your opinion on those.
Felo Torque Wrench - very precise...

Oh yeah baby! The best on TH-cam
Thanks !

Good point about factory oils I completely forgot to mention. Good catch.

"big lapping", Fitz kills me.

So what do you think about Burris XTR rings and pic rail?
Is that the tenmile in the thumbnail? How do you like it? How does it stack up against a mk5 or a razor? Not a lot about them on YT
What issues have you seen with Talley rings? I have one set and it would help to know what to watch out for.
“Are you saying sperm?” Hahahahahaha
Think about lapping rings mounted on a chitty pic rail. Do you hang a picture level or square to ceiling?
I’d get rid of the pic rail .
We will get into “leveling “ soon.

Primary arms comes close with their prism systems
