- Chelsea Lehnea performed the title role of “Turandot” for the Opera Forever! concert performance at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The concert was commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the passing of Maestro Giacomo Puccini. - August 16, 2024
Puccini lifted the children’s chorus music from the Chinese folk tune of Mò Li Hūa 茉莉花. In this performance, the Chinese text replaced the Italian. It is easy to see why Puccini picked that tune for Turandot’s grand entrance.
Daniel Suk is conducting the Dream Orchestra and Opera Chorus of Los Angeles as well as the Yanwen Han Opera Studio from the China Conservatory of Music.

This is marvelous. The chest use is SO SMARTYLY USED!!! Just as Lina Bruna Rasa did back in the good-old days!! Ofc this role is not for her to do every weekend, but honestly no other singer nowadays is bringing the fierceness into this role as I have heard Chelsea do. This is an exaple of amazing technique put to use in a very tough role. I think singers should be allowed to "take this risks". That's when our technique truly goes into use. We have only one life and if we artists and singers don't try to do things we enjoy, I don't know why are we doing this. Of course she doesn't have Nilsson's voice. That's obvious, but if she wants to enjoy herself singing this repertoire and her technique allows her to do so in a way that doesn't hurt her voice (if I'm not mistaken, she said her teacher recommended her no to sing the role again in 15 years hahaha) I don't see any problem. GO AND ENJOY YOURSELF, CHELS!!! Because if you enjoy yourself, FOR SURE you will enjoy your audience. I've been enjoying your singing foer years, but this last months have been a dream... Thanks for everything.
😂
A Turandot that actually sounds like a princess. Absolutely stunning singing 😍
Finally a Turandot of our time who sounds truly like a princess... And such thrilling chest voice too!
A Turandot that actually sounds as fresh and young as she should!!! 🎉 very very good and very refreshing! Thank you!
Wow! Radically different from the matronly Turandots we usually hear… careful technique, brilliant use of chest voice, and really lovely phrasing makes for a youthful princess. Great work breathing some fresh air into this role ❤
Finally a Turandot with a decent voice without pushing after many years... Bravissimo! Even with not the biggest volume the tension and intensity are there. Hope to see you one day live!!!!
Remarkable. The first time I’ve heard this aria sung with emotion, told as a story, and not just belted out. A young voice for the part, of course, but listen to that potential! Anyone who disagrees simply has no imagination.
A world class voice in the making. Liu, Lucia, now Turandot - all sung intelligently, skillfully and passionately. For many opera lovers like myself, hearing a voice like this is extremely exciting to see what the future brings. Chelsea, I’m watching your career with excitement.
Chelsea, your dedication to expressive singing shows. Well done!
Wonderful diction. Haven’t heard Turandot with diction like this in a while.
She outshines the entire chorus, orchestra and the tenor at the end. I’d certainly buy a ticket to something she was in.
Amazing, so much dramatic conviction!
Marvellous. Thank you Chelsea for your hard work.
You put so much emotion and sorrow into this, it's really illuminating to hear (and see!) an interpretation that doesn't lean into the ice princess. Absolutely beautiful and touching!
Also wow, I never realized how exposed the vocal line is until seeing the orchestra just....sitting there 😅
You have no idea how much you inspire me! I'm always searching my voice as a singer and sometimes it gets me through arias that I never thought it could work. Hope to see so much more from you, keep making opera great! ❤
Absolutely incredible! 🤩
wow she's great!!! ❤
If she has a "lighter" voice than "what we are used to" in this role....and makes the music sound better (much better!) than the usual ones do....then which is wrong, Chelsea Lehnea or "what we are used to"?
Мне очень Джильда понравилась 2019 года: th-cam.com/video/gGXZs9KjP2o/w-d-xo.html&t.
Absolutely stunning 🤩💞💞💞💞💞
You can understand everything she's saying...
Incredible. BRAVISSIMA!
Bravissima!
Glorious ❤❤❤❤🎉
Wow, goood job!👏❤

FIRECE!
Why sing Turandot soooooooooooo young? Take care.
I've mixed feelings... There is diction, which is a huge problem these days... Not with her, we clearly hear every single word... Also, no hold in the voice is projected out there as it should. That interesting vibrato sometimes is a bit too much as almost a tremolo, maybe a lit less effect on that. But though I find it fresh and different in a good sense, there is no way to turn around the fact that the voice itself lacks a bit of 'weight'. We are always hoping for a big voice in Turandot. It's is also true that it's not easy to find one that can sing the role. I find it very interesting... I will listen to it more and let it get into my nerves and figure out. It's refreshing, that's for sure. And pleasant to hear. Hmmm... I can't tell exactly. Congrats anyway. Beautiful singing.
I wouldn't describe it as tremolo. The vibrato is definitely wider than ideal, but it doesn't obscure the pitch much and oscillates at a normal frequency. It's more like a trill than a tremolo, I guess.
This voice is not for Turandot. Don't have low voice for this role. And the vibrato are bad.
Please Chelsea, make up your mind, not too late yet. You have a voice for Liu, not Turandot. Don't ruin your instrument as a lot of good singers did before you.
@@franzleiermann4955 Do you have an opportunity for Liù at a similar venue and fee? No? Then politely have several seats.
My choices require no explanation, and the audience and myself enjoyed ourselves that evening. If I wanted to destroy my instrument, it is mine to do so. ✌🏼😊
@@chelsealehneasoprano i said please, and of course it is up to you. But i bet that your fans love to hear you sing in about 10 years. Hopefully it was a one time thing. Don't be angry, i love your voice and i want to enjoy it for some time.
@@franzleiermann4955 Saying “please” doesn’t change the tone of your comment which is why I responded in kind. I can't promise my fans ten years because anything could happen between now and then. In the present, I am annoyed that y'all would talk down to me as if I’m not fully aware of the decisions I make. My fans should trust me to know what I’m doing and that I wouldn’t push the instrument passed its capabilities...as evidenced above. I appreciate all who listen as my sole desire in singing is to connect with the audience. However, when my love for music making stops, all that will be left are recordings like these.
@@chelsealehneasoprano good luck👍
This is an isolated event! She sings it extremely well with her voice not trying to artificially darken it. She will grow with this aria as she matures. There have been singers who've started with Liu and later sang Turandot, some with mixed results, but others like Caballe and Leona Mitchell, as well as Lucine Amara, sang both. She sang it in a way that is totally appropriate for her age. She's well coached and prepared. I applaud her versatility and musical integrity.
