    ....I can't get past whether it's a waffle or a pancake.

Tip!!! Occasionally people make mistakes. You never know what the waitress/waiter has going on in their life that they could just be having an absent minded day. They depend on tips to get to minimum wage - it’s not in addition to. He knew it was his mistake so he owned it. People have hard lives. What if a woman ruined your order but you found out she miscarried the day before…. You just never know, their dog could have died. That’s what I always think about when people mess stuff up, they are just people. We all mess up- have empathy and give grace.

When you give an order, the server enters it. It’s a done deal. If you specify that you want something else to come out later, he has to either put it on the order with a delay(if the computer screen has that option) or remember to put it in. Personally I would order the main meal and then order the pancakes or waffles when you’re almost done. Too many times I’ve ordered app and meal at same time hoping that my meal is spaced out properly. Doesn’t always work out that way. It also matters how busy the restaurant is. Was he really slammed? Did he have tables that were really demanding and constantly asking for refills etc? Waffles or pancakes take almost no time and I’d rather have them fresh than cold and soggy. The fact that he said they were on the house was a definite plus in his favor. Just giving a different perspective as someone that worked many years in the business. Personally, I would have tipped well. 😊

When I've recieved decent to excellent service with a similar request or a dreaded food allergy sub, the waiter/waitress will repeat the order with the delay or subsitution.
I'd still tip lower than usual. Homie should have prevented a low tip.

I would have tipped him a minimum of 20%… probably more… and thanked him for giving it to me on the house. You know… sowing godly responses into people’s lives plants godly seeds… or waters what has already been planted. I try to keep that in mind in everything I do. Of course, I fail… but that’s my goal… to eventually always keep that in mind.

Sounds like you had such a crappy food service! I think tipping $10 was more than sufficient considering the type of service you had!

The problem is manifold. Firstly, do we sinners really deserve to be served at all? Secondly, tipping used to be incentive, but thanks to very bad service labor laws in the west (the US in particular), tipping has become the de facto method of compensation for servers. Most make less than $3.00\hr, and it is not unusual for servers to owe the restaurant money at the end of the pay period. Thirdly, as you mentioned, tip sharing is frequently used, even though the kitchen staff are generally paid well above minimum wage. So yes, you should tip your server EVEN when they mess up your order, forget to check on you in timely fashion, or otherwise fails to meet your expectations. If it's consistently bad, tell the manager and\or go somewhere else. Another thing to consider is that if the server says something is "on the house", there's a good chance the server paid for it out-of-pocket. And John, the message wasn't really about pointing out the mistake, but rather that you forgave him. :D Love ya, brother! Thanks for keeping us laughing all these years! :D

I have trouble understanding this mentality. All you had to do was think about biblical principles.
If someone wrongs you, you go and talk to them. Instead, you gossiped about him and sought to punish him through the tip. I think that is worldly thinking, honestly.
I try to consider how Jesus treats me. He saved me, even though I didn’t want it, didn’t seek it. He was and is gracious and kind. He seeks my good. You can let your server know he dropped the ball without all the drama. I’ll admit that I’ve been tempted to do the same.
I always tip the same amount to mirror Christ’s love for me. That’s my conviction but it also serves a second purpose of avoiding the temptation of judging and punishing. Jesus doesn’t punish me for my sin. Instead, He took it for me. Yes, there can be discipline, but this isn’t the context for it. A gentle correction would’ve sufficed.

Usually most corporate places do shared tips between all waitress' and staff. Private places usually the waitress' usually just tip out bus boys, bartenders and most of the time cooks. If you get something for free you should tip better than norm even in this sitch. Atleast add that free stuff to the receipt in your head and tip to that amount. Most of the time it's still cheaper for you. It's a win win. If he didn't add that for free tip the absolute min.

John, your critical thinking skills are low, very low. You don’t reward bad behavior/service.
