Tearing Out An Old Swimming Pool

  • Tearing out an old swimming pool with the 2150. This job took a turn after I got the water out I discovered it was used as a trash dump. The property was bought earlier this year out of foreclosure and apparently the previous owners trashed the place. They put all this junk in the pool and burned it then covered it with rocks. So I brought a dumpster out and loaded as much of the trash as I could in it. Then busted up the concrete and laid it flat in the bottom and started covering with dirt. The 2150 was the perfect machine for the job, with the power and reach it made quick work of demoing the concrete. Thanks for watching! #EliteEarthworks #Takeuchi #pooldemo

Glad you were on this one before some 'hacker' tried to bury worse! We all feel better! Hey, all in a day's work and glad too you're in a closed cab with GOOD air to breathe as that mess must STINK & probably shouldn't breathe. Dumpster came in really handy. You're correct, it absolutely looks different (lots of work too!) Thanks BRANDON! Sonny

A lot of the soil you have to dig in looks like some horrendously rocky soil but that pool takes the cake, Yikes!!! What a mess that was. You totally did the right thing with removing the trash, and after seeing the side of the roll off dumpster, I would think you were glad you didn't put that in your dump truck!! That was a great video, really shows what you can run into and the challenges it can bring. Glad you filmed it and posted for us.
The 2150 is going to need a major bath after this to clean the slime off, so did dropping that block into the deep end splatter the windshield?
And that looked like a 1/3 sheet finish sander.... you probably could have cleaned that up and......LOL, nope, the bin was the right place for it all!
    Have a good weekend Elite's!!

Yes I was very glad for the dumpster lol! Yeah that’s what I thought when I decided to upload it. I was worried cause some people flip out about stuff like this but it wasn’t me doing anything I was just stuck cleaning it up. I got some mud on the windshield but it’s very dirty now lol! Definitely will need a bath. 🤣 I guess I could have kept the sander. Appreciate you watching and commenting

What a mess! It looks like the last job I did clearing up a house where piles of dirt were mixed with all kinds of junk. Ended up spreading it all out and using pump and fire hose to wash the pile on the ground before scooping it up with a rake grapple. The tenants who lived there for years used the 2 acre yard as a dumping ground for their own property cleanout business. What would have been a multi dump truck load to the landfill became a one dump trailer load of roofing waste. The scrap alone was a few tons but a mix of car sheet metal, twisted rebar, rims brake drums.
The pool breakup reminds me of how it is to dig a trench in our soil. Scraping away at coral rock a few inches at a time. You would be surprised that despite the extremely tiny yards on every new development here built since the 2000's so many people have turned their entire yard into a pool. Meanwhile most old motels have filled in their old pools with many still having the structure with only dirt and rocks dumped in.

I had two very similar jobs with pools...one was completely filled in with all kinds of household junk...couches, rugs, beds and mattresses and Belgium block curbs then grassed over.. turned out to be a disgruntled ex-husband who was going through a bad divorce showed up when his wife was away for a month and basically cleaned out the entire house and thought it would be funny to hide all her belongings under ground... I removed over 30 yards of debris....it was priced as T&M.......... Concrete pools are always a challenge....most towns in NJ want the entire contents removed and certified clean fill dirt. I've been doing pool removals since 1999....I ALWAYS rent a hammer on a machine like your's for all concrete pools..gunnite are the toughest ones to break apart especially with the rebar woven like a wicker basket.
Glad you made the right choice to haul all the debris away..

It’s always a bad surprise to find something like this hidden under the water. Like my last paver patio job that I found two old patios buried ( a couple inches) under the ground when I started digging, one flagstone and one old paver brick. Both had to be removed before I could start building the new patio and of course it meant digging out an extra foot of material than planned.

Well done (again) sir. I should also say I like the "improvise, adapt, overcome," philosophy of dropping the concrete block as a hammer. And I probably couldn't have resisted dropping it in the water, either, except I don't have a cab, and, well, "stinky" was never a nickname I would have wanted.

Looks to be a great job for the 2150. I am always so impressed by how quiet that machine is,,,,,,,. Really like your ethics about the trash. You are definitely right. If I bought the place and they said there’s a pool broken up and buried in the back if I was ever to dig there, I would be fine with it. That’s what you do with pools, but,,,,,, if you said Theresa a lot of trashy toilets, bottles metal etc, I would be asking you to dig it out before I were to take possession today!! Haha. Do it now or do it later. I am thinking you did the right thing in getting the current homeowner on side!

A little pool spackle, a couple of coats of sky blue paint, add a diving board over the deep end, a water slide on the side, sprinkle a few ubiquitous Adirondack loungers around the deck… And, Voila’!!!

The sides being out would give you access to start pulling the bottom out. May not even need the block. Great idea though. I will NOT forget that trick.

Ooooh that smell, can't you smell that smell? Yuck! Good for you not burying all that garbage in the back yard. As far as it being buried at the landfill, a landfill is set up for garbage to be taken care of, kept from contaminating the ground, and monitored from here on out. Landfills are lined with some kind of thick rubberized material to keep the contaminates contained now aren't they? Maybe if you'd dropped the big block on its small end instead of on the side it wouldn't have broken in half. It worked using the half pieces anyway though so whatever gets the job done. I always enjoy removing and filling in pools. Not so much when they're full of garbage and nastiness though. Nice job. Looks good. Stay well. -Wil 👍

Watching this for the first time... I'm at timestamp 16:36... prediction: the concrete block is going to break long before the pool ever cracks. (This has been my result with these pools. Hydraulic hammer works best.) A steel wrecking ball could work, but takes at least 2x as long as a hydraulic hammer.
Ok... now I'll watch the rest of the video and see how it turns out in your case.
