My Great Grandfather was one of the men who helped cut the holes in these redwoods for people to drive through. My Great Aunt may she rest in peace had many pictures of my grandfather and the men he worked with hard at work cutting these holes.
We love the Chandelier tree in Leggett, CA - every time we buy a new vehicle (not that we do frequently) we take a vehicle through there. One time I was at the Chandelier tree and someone drove a pickup truck through it. You could hear it scraping the tree and I was concerned about the truck until I saw it come out and it had already seen much better days, so whatever happened on the way through the tree was of no concern to the driver.
Just came back from trip to California to see the redwoods. The Shrine Tree left us laughing. Simply a tourist trap. The Chandelier Tree was magnificent however.
Back when I was a teenager I used to work at the Shrine Drive Thru Tree in Myers Flat Ca. I started in the gift shop then the deli but the best place to work was the booth. Thats where I collected the toll to drive thru the tree. I also made log trucks, burl clocks, key chains ect...Tourist took video of me performing these tasks from all over the world. It was my very first job and one I will never forget. Thank you Dan Baleme for hiring me. Memories I will always treasure. Such an amazing place. The Redwoods are still breathtaking to me everytime I visit. I have a lot of Family History Kim B.
Cont...I have a lot of Family history up in Humboldt co. So very proud. My Great Grandfather help build the Ave of the Gaints and my Great Grandmother was the first women to run a huge machine in the Scotia mill. So much more tell. Perhaps Another time. Thank you
Actually, both redwoods are under 300 ft. .. the Shrine is less than 140 ft. and the Chandelier is 276 ft. The Chandelier is the more pretty of the bunch. More > mdvaden.com/redwood_drive_through.shtml
This is the Chandelier Tree in the Redwoods, CA - take the Avenue of the Giants, it's amazing! www.drivethrutree.com/home.html also there is the Shrine drive thru tree at Meyers Flat, CA
I'm more concerned of the trees - Again I feel as humanity has disturbed a natural living tree trunk and squared it off into a walk/drive thru?-what happened to going around things instead as nature takes its course 😔 Absolutely stunning these trees!
We agree that these are amazing trees, and our highlights of the trip were hiking among the undisturbed areas, not this touristy drive through tree. These old growth redwoods are amazing. -M
We started our travels with our beloved Coda. In fact, she was a major motivator for why we chose domestic RV travel instead of other travel as we wanted her with us all the time. We lost her to cancer in our first year on the road. We have a tribute blog post and video about her. Still tough for me. Miss her dearly. Here is al link to the post and video. rvlove.com/2014/11/21/a-tribute-to-coda/
Not this tree - this is the Chandelier tree - you are thinking of the Pioneer Cabin tree... looks similar but this one still stands! Sad for the other though :(
Sad about the tree - but it was not THIS tree. This one is still alive and well and standing. Ut was another tree Pioneer Cabin tree in Calaveras Big Trees State Park

We saw a couple folks try to drive trucks through it while we were there too. Very delicate process for sure. -M

Unfoutunatly im pretty sure this tree has since fallen to the ground do to natural reasons .

O . Well one of the trees that you can drive thru fell didn't it ? I thought there was only one. ? I hope I'm wrong .
All they did was kill these trees by cutting tunnels into them
No.. the tree is still growing
