Ever since it was announced, I have been shocked how Recall has run the gamut from inception to near-release without someone with influence in Microsoft going “well maybe this isn’t such a good idea…”
the way these tech execs are so eager to implement ai products/features that are underdeveloped and that NOBODY REALLY WANTED is embarrassingly shameless
Since day one, Recall sounded like a horrendous feature from a privacy and security standpoint. Microsoft claiming it would be completely secure didn't sound convincing. Now here we are with Recalled being easily hacked via multiple methods. Microsoft would have rolled this out while full of holes, had people not tested their claims. Speaks volumes.
Yep, I started using Linux about a year ago and noticed I'm using the exact same apps on it (my use case ofcourse) as they are (unfortunately, but in this case also nice) web based mostly. So it has been my daily driver and I have no need for Windows 11 at all at the moment, if I would have a desk-job I'll just use it there, but definitely not at home. And at home I started a homelab, working perfectly as well.
Once an attacker is on the system enough to enable Recall, they already can grab screenshots etc. Microsoft is just trying to help them by building the capabilities directly into the OS. Shared functionality reduces development costs! 🙃
This Windows "feature" was a concern BEFORE the events of the last few days. My fear is that this "feature" will be made mandatory following the events of last weekend. A few months ago, a former political candidate who left the race weeks or months advocated for "zero anonymity" online in order to "protect the children." This Recall "feature" seems to sell itself to folks who want to "protect us on the internet." (sigh...) I went to that "DeleteMe" company online just now... After seeing what's going on with me, I can't BELIEVE how vulnerable I feel. Mahalo for this report! Aloha...and stay safe out there!
I realize that Microsoft tends to rely on insiders. It beats me how this would have skipped both a security review as well as an insider review and go straight to the field. Is this what complacency looks like? It looks more like either gross negligence, or completely intentional.
You’re doing a great job Shannon! Not much content doing the rounds on actually explaining Recall in the past couple of months so this is a good explanation of it to refresh some memories.
are you serious? There has been tons of content on this feature with clear explanations since June. Things have died down since Microsoft decided to postpone it.
Damn... i was kind of hoping for a horrified expression from you when talking about Recall 🤣... Tho i do appreciate the reference to the eye of Sauron, totally stealing that analogy 😏
Me sitting to the side from a safe distance, watching the dumpster fire that is M$ windows. I am so glad open source is catching up and things like PWA and Wine/Proton exist!
This is Microsoft's Diablo Immortals moment: "You all have phones, right." On the other point of Microsoft recall, this is the same thing they've done with music and movies, where we no longer own them and just rent them. If they can insert themselves in the chain of how you remember anything, you have to keep their services in order to still have access to the things you need to remember.
I am full tinfoil hat on this one. Even if Microsoft promised "The data stays on your computer and uses offline algorithms to do processing", i have zero faith Microsoft wouldnt wait a few months or years, then say "we have added recall sync to onedrive. now you can look up what happened on your other computers." I am convinced one day we'll have an AI like ARIA from the movie Eagle Eye. Think about what has happened to the country since 2001. Heck, this week the harpies on The View were saying gun shop owners should report anytime someone buys more than 50 rounds to the police. Just imagine how much they would love the idea of "we could have an AI that watches everyone's screens, and if they buy something we dont like, we can send police to their door immediately"
"Privacy Nightmare or Game Changing AI? " Both. Very cool feature but the potential to exploit the data by bad actors/police/lawyers (discovery)/border agents (who can rummage through your electronics all they want)/etc. is so great that it just does not justify releasing it. As cool as it might be, this feature as implemented is incompatible with the world we live in. Prefect example of "This is why we can't have nice things"
Thank you for choosing Microsoft, solutions for questions I never asked... Nice video, Shannon. I enjoy your work/videos. I'm not sure why or when, but I had to subscribe to your channel more than once...?
Thank you for the video and confirming my fears. Thinking from a business perspective this data is too easy to abuse for corporate ends. "I want to scan all of those screenshots for non-work activity to punish those doing it. Feed the screenshots to another AI to flag offenders so we can give HR proof of wage theft." or "I want to confirm remote workers are doing work during work hours. Feed screenshots to another AI to flag idlers for punishment." I'm hoping there is a way to uninstall get rid of copilot entirely but so far I haven't stumbled across how to do that yet other than by abandoning windows entirely. If you find one please let us know. I'm also a fan of the sponsor in context of the problem you highlight.
I use the Microsoft Insider Edition for testing, I wouldn't use it to do anything sensitive other than playing MTGA and testing software. Logging into my bank? Microsoft has a long way to go before I trust doing that using their software...
I'm honestly watching this because i heard in the news Microsoft has stopped working and I'm also trying to take an exam known as fisdaps which I'm trying to learn and this is going on is wasting my chances of passing my test
I think that the idea of recall is a good one BUT.... poorly rolled out/implemented the wrong way. With correct and strong security setup BY DEFAULT!, encrypted properly, notifications when its going to screenshot and NEVER leaving your device (by default, less an opt in to the wider eco-system... maybe) it could be really useful..... but no one [rightly] trusts any big tech firm to look after users data without exploiting it for some business financial gain!!

Linux is becoming more and more attractive for every announcement Microsoft makes about Windows. My home server has already been moved over to Linux.
Perfect for a server

Linux as a desktop OS.... still failing after 30 years.
Whats to stop a threat actor enabling this without the users knowledge and using it to spy on them?
Nothing at all...
This 👏🏻

Great video Shannon! Been a fan of your work for years. Always on point information and opinions. You do good stuff!
thank you!
I'm no security expert, but as soon as I heard of this "feature" I knew it was bad and an immediate disable on any PC I have access to
I realize that Microsoft tends to rely on insiders. It beats me how this would have skipped both a security review as well as an insider review and go straight to the field. Is this what complacency looks like? It looks more like either gross negligence, or completely intentional.
My Microsodt Surface is running Linux Mint. I'm done with Microsoft.

They need to just stop the rollout, and any product like it. It's a microsoft brand killer.

Advances in technology are usually developed to solve a problem; what problem do the masses have that need this 'improvement'.

A freaking men! As soon as win10 EOL comes I’m moving to Linux maybe before
Great Tea, Shannon~
It has heavily censored unfortunately. It's doesn't even response like an AI anymore.

Thanks for sharing. I appreciate this topic. Blessings on your day.
TBH, I had no idea about this feature. Thanks Shannon
They'll release it first to the insider community that they ignore. Just some smoke and mirrors as far as I'm concerned.
great. something else i don't need or want that lards down my computer's processor. They might as well be using our computers to mine bitcoin.
All vloggers are failing to report on the fact that these AI "features" are going to cost $20 a month, Microsoft, Google, and Apple!
Where did you hear that? Because afaik, all 3 are offering their AI (Gemini, Apple Intelligence, and CoPilot) for free.
@@ShannonMorseLimited versions which is understandable since current LLMS ai costs a lot to run.
Is it something I would use? In a word -----> NO
Nice video
Thank you!
@ShannonMorse I recommend you creatine monohydrate and EEA
IMO this should be something that is OFF by default and you have to turn it on if you want to use it. 🤔

How many times have you had to re-record this basic video, as Microsoft changed things while you were editing the previous draft? 😀
About 3 times lol. I wrote the original script in early June haha 😹

Doesn't everyone want to be helped by the Eye of Sauron???
Uninstallable?
microsoft search can't even find a text file on the desktop.
yeah bro, your all-seeing-eye will do a great job.
Thankssssssssssssssssss
