  • In an exclusive interview with ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi, Ohio State football head coach Urban Meyer says he would never condone domestic violence and erred in trying to support Zach Smith, who he calls a "troubled employee." Meyer says there was no “consciousness of guilt” regarding what was on his cell phone and describes the 3-game suspension he received as “firm, harsh, tough.”

    When I saw this last year I remember going into it biased against Urban and came out feeling bad for him. Rinaldi had a clear agenda here and he made no effort to hide it. He’s blaming Meyer for unreasonable things right out of the gate. “Why didn’t you know more?” What kind of a question is that? Joke of an interview

    It's irritating the guy interviewing acts like Urban Meyer is guilty of domestic violence...Urban Meyer is a football coach not a marriage counselor for Zach and Courtney Smith. I'm so tired of everything always getting blamed on the football coach. The media knew about all these allegations in years past so why didn't they do more. How can you win when you get blamed for trying to help but then if he didn't help he would have been asked why didn't he do more.

      same thing i keep asking - why is Urban being asked to do something that the family courts and LE did not feel was appropriate - disciplining Zach Smith, and Rinaldi and Finebaum et al questioning why Urban did not contact Courtney Smith is bizarre - Employers do NOT normally contact employee's spouses about marital woes - would be inappropriate

    For anyone saying "his job is to coach football" well as you have heard every single coach (especially at the amateur level) say their job is to teach their players to be men. For Urban to say I was trying to stabilize their family yet know absolutely nothing about them and that the coaches know nothing about one another off the field is one hard to believe and two if true, irresponsible because you are giving parents a promise to take care of their child and that includes your coaching staff. Not a good example to not even seemingly try to get to know the coaches that are influencing the kids he recruited. If you think he didn't know about NINE police reports you're insane. If it was your sister or mom getting beat and some dude was hiring and rehiring him I bet you'd hold Urban more responsible for some of this. IMO

    A) Pierre, you really need to educate yourself and learn how to read and write complete and grammatically correct sentences so people will take you seriously. B) You do realize Zach Smith was never arrested, and never charged with any domestic violence. C) Courtney Smith's own mother, former friends, and the Powell police department (that will be testifying on behalf of Zach Smith in a few weeks in a court of law) have stated they do not believe her, rather they believe Zach Smtih. D) Courtney Smith has a proven track record of abusing drugs and alcohol and anger management issues throughout her marriage. E) Courtney Smith never worked or held a job, even to this day, rather living off the income of child support from Zach Smith's coaching job. F) Courtney Smith has previous stated to both her family and former friends in person and by social media that she was "going to get Zach and bring down Urban", on more than one occasion before this carefully planned story was released by her in August. God gave us all a brain and the ability make reasonable decisions and determinations, so I would suggest you try using it sometime Pierre, instead of following along with the rest of the herd of sheep gullible enough to latch onto the far left leaning media platform masquerading as a sports network by the name of ESPN... remember.. the E stands for "Entertainment" in ESPN for a reason. Ohio State suspended their coach to appease the masses in this #metoo and politically correct era we now live in, nothing more. Those are the facts.

    Cornhusker fan I put Urban Meyer in as high regard as Tom Osborne through the years he made some tough calls with his players and staff, he never turned his back on them and tried to do what was right. It seems to me and I believe Urban has and will do what he feels is in the best interest of ALL the people he is responsible for. There is not one person except Tom Rinaldi who doesn't know and always makes the RIGHT? decisions. If he was recruiting my child if his actions in this were any different I wouldn't let him in the door. Good luck to you Coach Meyer and Tom Rinaldi you are not very good at what you do, has anyone ever told you, you are a poison snake in the grass?

    You can tell this entire interview Urban knows that the allegations from Courtney are all bullshit. He didn’t want to say but Shelly was trying to appease Courtney and her drunken lies of abuse when she more often then not was the instigator of the fights and confrontations in her marriage. Easy to read that by her interview and by Zach’s.

      What, so on top of coaching, delegating responsibilities, overseeing all other coaches, recruiting, media stuff, game prep, and so on and so forth, now coaches have to investigate and intervene in DV situations? C'mon man, it is not the coaches job to intervene. He can get more information but then the situation should be handled by law enforcement, human resources, counseling department or anyone that is qualified to actually help in a DV situation.

      @lindsh6097 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you listen to the interview? He couldn’t interview anyone or ask questions or contact Courtney. There was a police investigation, so he was told stay out of it, and we’ll get updates from police. Police came back and said there was no domestic violence, just a messy divorce with child custody issues. That is when Urban decided to get Zach counseling to help stabilize the family. The other option would’ve been to fire him when it was found he didn’t do anything, and that would send his family into even more upheaval.
      What else was he supposed to do?

    • @lindsh6097
      @lindsh6097 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And it’s not Courtney Smith’s fault either...in Ohio, if the police see any signs of domestic abuse at all, they are required to file charges. Even if Courtney refused to press charges herself. So this was completely out of her control once police were involved. They are the ones who investigated and then told the University it wasn’t domestic violence.

    Let's be perfectly clear here Urban Meyer is a football coach not the police or judge. It is not the responsibility of an employer to investigate domestic violence in the home or play marriage counselor. That is the venue of the police and courts. In fact, if Urban had fired the coach over simple allegations he could have put himself and the whole program at Ohio State at risk. Holding an employer responsible for what goes on in the home of it's employees sets a very dangerous precedent.

    Everyone keeps complaining about Urban doing this interview, but I can understand where he’s coming from. It would drive me crazy to be falsely accused of something I was steadfastly against at my core. I would feel compelled to try and clear my name and get the truth out. And yeah, it may make you look bad to those who’ve already made up their minds against you, but I totally understand him on this. It’s something he’s gotta do for himself because it’s haunting him that people believe he would turn his back on domestic violence.
    If you truly listen to him, and you’ve followed this story closely (not just national news/ESPN), you’d understand that believing Urban isn’t even a question.
    He didn’t know most of the crap going on with Zach. He knew about a few work related issues, and he knew there was a messy divorce going on in 2015 where police determined there was no domestic violence. The first time that an actual police protection order was placed against Zach in 2018, Urban fired him immediately. It was AFTER that when he was asked questions at media days, and then the ratings hungry talking heads decided to go crazy with a total non story. They reported one side, and facts were twisted and delivered in ways that made them seem more inflammatory than they were. This was a complete witch hunt from the start, and from someone living in Columbus, getting ALL of the reporting on the situation, it was sickening to see the narrative that was put out nationally.
    This is a classic case of someone trying to do a good deed and having it come back to bite them in the ass. Urban did nothing wrong.

    - No matter what side you fall on this issue, one thing is for sure!... Urban Meyer LOVES his job at Ohio State, has fought for and jumped through hoops to remain the Buckeyes head coach, and like it or not, this may very well be what strengthens the program for decades to come! In the long run, the whole situation with the Smith's could actually IMPROVE recruiting at Ohio State and the program overall. How you might ask? Well it wasn't too long ago that the recruiters and pundits for other college teams used to tell the top prep talent all sorts of rumors in order to keep them off of Ohio State's campus. False rumors prevailed, many may have been based on Meyers unexpected exit from Florida, but also included fabrications about early retirement, testing the NFL, Meyer looking for a new challenge, as many negative recruiters did their best to imply that Urban Meyer wasn't in Columbus for the "long haul". After all, he did simply flake out at Florida and skipped town, right? But a funny thing may have happened in the aftermath of the Zach and Courtney debacle.
    Urban Meyer fought for his job, has shown his love for Ohio State, and possibly out of this mess, has shown to all future recruits he is NOT going to leave, possibly can't leave, and now all of those future athletes considering Ohio State will know for decades to come that Urban Meyer will be there, coaching not only for their time in Columbus, but for multiple decades as well after they leave the Buckeye State. Future generations will know that Urban Meyer is NOT going anywhere, and in a strange way, this situation could make the Buckeyes much MORE talented in the future, "Scary talented", with even more of the top talent heading to Columbus for the coach they KNOW will be there. An interesting possibility out of an otherwise troubling situation.

    ESPN was fine with Auburn paying Cam Newton's family to steer him to Auburn, but tries to destroy Meyer because of an unproven allegation that an assistant coach smacked up his wife. One scenario constitutes cheating and the other does not. You can decide which is which.

    I tweeted to Zach Smith's attorney Brad Koffel this morning with no response yet, but would it NOT be totally inappropriate for Urban even if he wanted to, too contact Courtney Smith relative to her marriage difficulties - I am NOT familiar with many employer bosses that reach out to any of their employees spousal partners to discuss their marriage difficulties - just NOT typically an employer's place - I think it would open the employer to a host of legal issues .... the only reason this case is getting so much attention is because a high paid very successful well known football coach is involved ... Urban's own family and their strong presence is the best indicator that Urban is a fine fellow - the same case probably cannot be said of Zach Smith - but Urban's conduct from my view has been commendable ... and if you listen to the commentary of his current Buckeye football team starting with Dwayne Haskins - Urban is turning out many model citizens - let the man do his job

      Pierre, what do you make of the fact Courtney’s Mom is estranged from her daughter over this situation, and claims she’s made? What do you make of the fact that Courtney made numerous accusations of domestic abuse, but no charges were filed by the Powell Police? Is there a cover up by the Powell Police? I don’t know what happened between Courtney and Zack Smith, as you don’t know either. If Zack hit her, and the evidence supports that, then he should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I believe you and many others are asking the wrong questions. You should be asking the Powell Police why they didn’t prosecute after the numerous complaints. The police were the one on the ground when the complaints were made, not Urban Meyers. With that said, I believe Urban should’ve fired Zach long ago, but Pierre, if Zach is truly an abuser would’ve firing him guaranteed the abuse to stop? My answer would be, no, it may have made it worse. Because now he’s not making $400,000 a year. An his wife was the cause of this, because abusers always blames the wife for causing him to abuse. Think about it.

      A) You really need to educate yourself and learn how to read and write complete and grammatically correct sentences so people will take you seriously.

      He’s been suspended that entire time, so it’s all happened after the fact. His point was that he wasn’t aware of any pictures until after Zach Smith was fired and the investigation took place.
      Stop reaching and trying to look for something simply because you want it to be true.

    • @lindsh6097
      @lindsh6097 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tj Mckenzie I’ll have to respectfully disagree. My personal view when he said one week and then immediately corrected it was because he was simply trying to say that he RECENTLY found out about pictures...and that he didn’t know of them prior to firing Zach. More than likely, he threw a week out there, and then simultaneously realized he should probably be more accurate, so he corrected it.
      I’ve done that plenty of times...I’ll refer to something as “the other day” when it was a month ago.
      I felt Urban was being very open and honest in this interview. The one thing he couldn’t/wouldn’t speak on was why Shelly didn’t share the texts with him. He said “she has her reasoning”. All of us in Columbus know what that reasoning is (Courtney is a nut case and Shelly was simply trying to appease her and settle the situation in those texts, but she didn’t actually believe Courtney. Just telling her what she wanted to hear). And that’s why Shelly wouldn’t share them with Urban. It was silly drama that she probably rolled her eyes at, and didn’t feel Urban should have to worry about it, so she didn’t tell him. Urban just can’t say that yet. Zach and Courtney have a court date coming up in a couple weeks here in Columbus, and the police department is testifying on Zach’s behalf, so hopefully the full truth will come out afterward.
      Even if it does though, I suspect ESPN won’t report on it.
      Same as they wouldn’t report that Courtney’s own mother went public and said Courtney’s allegations are false and she was the abusive one.

    You Ohio State people need to stop thinking football and exercise some empathy for Courtney Smith. She, and her kids, are the ONLY consideration. If Urban Meyer is going to meddle in somebody's marriage, he needs to make sure he knows what he's doing. No charges and no arrest doesn't equal no abuse. In fact, it's more common to not have police involvement. Oh, how I dispose this guy.
