    I really disagree with you here, but still, you have such a way with words that I almost was convinced I was wrong in liking it. I thought the appearance of Anne Boleyn felt more like Diana’s coping mechanism, of course also serving as some sort of metaphor.

    Speaking of Diana Spencer being of noble birth:
    It seems weird how *this movie* would completely ignore that and *sensationalize her like some kind of tragic, common Cinderella.*
    Even though its script writer, Steven Knight, is British, it's like this movie *portrayed her through the American (or otherwise, non-British) gaze.* Perhaps a ploy to try to appeal to shallow film-goers who simply want a *more "relatable" story-line!*

    • @richgranados11
      @richgranados11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I honestly think people should just leave Diana alone. Let her Rest In Peace. Didn’t she die because people were unhealthily obsessed with her? She was like the rest of us, a person with problems. Why sensationalize it? Yea, the film looks great but for what end?
      If they had to make a movie about her, it should have been more nuanced, perhaps exploring her relationship with her mother and lovers? But still, they dig up her legacy for awards. Cheap

    I went in expecting a much more nuanced portrayal of Diana, just seems like an interesting figure. While I did appreciate them focusing on a specific time zone, honing in on her very life instead of her death, the people around her, instead of forcing this overall importance upon her. I did however agree that the final touch of character wasn't quite there. It was kind of like watching a PTA film but not being overwhelmed with nuance and intrigue by the end.

  • @WhurDaCookiesAt
    @WhurDaCookiesAt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I thought the point in the film about how the general public and media feed into and perpetuate the royal family's behaviors and traditions was interesting, as it allowed room to empathize with the royals instead of viewing them as complete villains with no nuance to them. I interpreted the ending as an illustration that Diana achieved a brief moment of freedom and fun with her family, but she will never escape to a normal life. Once the news spreads about her departure, the cameras will always be following and watching. I agree with your point about the "on the nose" symbolism though

    The beginning of the movie was a little more promising than the later half. I think the score was highly effective and sort of carried the dissiray of the film. Also Kristen Stewart's performance was very good. For me though, the film got lost in its aesthetic and never really left the surface, even in its surreal moments. Emotionally charged though, definitely relatable for most.

    Looking at some of the indoor dinner footage and I get Barry Lyndon vibes with the infamous Zeiss f/0.7 lenses and the custom made candles. Not that the movies are anywhere near in terms of craft and story telling but it does remind me of it.

    I think ppl are making the mistake in thinking this film is about Diana when it’s not. It’s a fable (with all the baggage that entails) using Diana and her persona to contextualize it.
    I love this movie and I’ve had a hard time rationalizing why. There’s something in it, in the obviousness of the metaphors, in the camp appeal in Stewart’s Performance, in the anxiety of Larrain’s camera.
    There’s this entire streak in the movie (that is more in the direction than the writing) about how childish Diana is. Something so fascinating about that.
    Also the idea of “she’s just a normal girl” where she gets along better with staff better than the royals also feels like a subversion.
    It felt more for me that it’s so sad that the only ppl she can relate to are the ppl paid to respect her no matter what and her children who look up to her like a goddess.
    There’s something in this movie, underpinning it beyond just the anxiety. That tops over into absurdity in a way I find captivating.
    There’s a grim fairly tale element to the whole thing. I’ve called it CARNIVAL OF SOULS smooshed together with BARRY LYNDON.

      @@iansmart4158 I saw it in a rundown theater and the audio was bad, I could hardly understand what was being said. So I left in the halfway point. I see why you're calling it Carnival of Souls but it felt more like Repulsion. I am afraid I am on the side of DeepFocusLens in her assessment of the movie. Great cinematography too but I find it lacking in narrative content. It could also have been more grounded. I wonder how Pride and Prejudice writer-actor Emma Thompson would have treated it if she wrote it. As for Kristen's acting, I didn't like it. I may have preferred Krisen channeling Jessica Lange in Music Box. One of the best acting performances I've seen and very natural, not too studied. Perhaps Spencer is not the type of film for me. I'll need to watch it again when it comes online.

      @@denniszenanywhere funnily enuff, I rewatched it’s today and all my little quibbles about the movie have evaporated.
      Even some of my doubt in the stewart performance were gone on rewatch. I think it’s an extraordinary performance. All feeling and gesture, truly rewatching allowed me to ignore the accent and really put attention on the little things. Her strut, her hands, her eyes, gestures. It’s a pretty full-bodied performance.
      Also also, it feels more Carnival of Souls to me because Repulsion is about invading space and bodies but Spencer felt more like the world was constantly watching and closing in.
      The first scene where she asks for directions and everyone is just staring at her ominously. Then there’s the way Her husband looks at her without saying a word.
      It’s never a threat on her person but just an overall vibe of maliciousness which feels very CoS to me.

    The rather disturbing cult around Diana is sadly the only way she'll ever be portrayed in films. I only hope we one day can see Christopher Hitchen's brutally honest image of her (*and* media's canonization of her during her life). That of a naive, young woman who literally believed she was becoming a Disney princess and fully embraced it because she was woefully inexperienced in life (even for her young age) and the goings of the world. Despite her not doing anything but dressing fashionably she became a saintly figure for a large part of the public. If not a serious film this could make a great satire about media's and the public's infatuation about celebrities they know nothing about.
    Alas, nil nisi bonum.
    Kristen Stewart is ironically well-cast in this role. While she may have depth as a person she lacks the ability to portray layers as an actress and it's all about the surface. Diana's personality was all surface too. I therefore don't see a talented actress aching to portray her. If Diana was a fictional character she would be considered flat and poorly written.

    She knew it was coming. She knew what she was up against. She suffered. She died.
    If you look at it like the royal family had her killed it’s more interesting. Despite the seemingly happy ending we all knew what was coming. The final scene of Charles walking into the room… plotting.
    This read makes it more interesting.
    Also she’s standing right outside the Tower of London on the end shot. Where Anne Boleyn spent her last days and was executed. What’s to stop them from doing it to her….
    Idk it can be more complex. As a character study it’s compelling. I can’t imagine finding parallels in Anne Boleyn’s story. She’s singular. And dead. We can only make presumptions.
    I think ultimately what’s most interesting is we look at her like a celebrity. She’s a royal. There’s 1,000 years of crazy shit royals did. Documented. Wives killed. Nephews killed. Brothers killed. All she was saying was “it could happen…”

    If you look at it like she was in constant fear because she did not fit… it’s heavier. It wasn’t just the fear of ostracizing… it was death. Hence Anne Boleyn metaphor.
    I don’t think it needs to be subversive… the blatantness is what’s compelling. People are conspiring against her yet there isn’t an out despite the constant public scrutiny. Protect the monarchy at all costs.

    Dear I think you are a little too harsh, especially about the ending. It is not about KFC, but who orders it, "Spencer". May be we need more substance and less cliché, for me the problem is not Stewart or the script but the direction that can´t decide if this is horror, a psychological study on madness or bulimia, or some sort of a bio that bids for freedom. I would have fleshed out a little more Diana's character and past (with flashbacks) and used the sterotypical royal characters for horror purposes, except for Charles they shouldnt even speak. Your are right about many things. In Rebecca a maid was enough to drive Fontaine´s character's crazy. Here we have dozens of people harassing Spencer. I would have started with a fairly normal Diana to then have her disintigrate as hours go by. Here she is always too anxious. Stewart overacts, and that is not her fault, but the director. Yes, Rebecca, The snake pit, or The innocents handled similar material better, with less fanfarre. Sorry for Stewart and Spencer.

    I totally agree with your assessment of the film. The Anne Boelyn (spelling?) thing was interesting at first, but was overworked, and failed to "land" anywhere. Anne B. at the top of the stairs was horribly mismanaged. Too bad so much of the movie is so well-done. Her weird interactions with the maids, for example. The creepy dinner scene/fantasy with the eating of the pearls is straight out of a silent horror film - the camera staying on the faces of the ghouls "naively" longer than necessary. The scene of Diana crossing the moonlit field to her childhood home looks like something directly out of Daphne du Maurier. The Queen and Charles were very well-cast, but the characters aren't allowed to DO enough.

    I do feel like you were a bit harsh on this film. I didn’t love it either but a lot of the stuff you criticize could be seen as intentional. The ridiculous performances and scenes taken from other stories seem to add to the films camp and it’s that aspect I feel that went unacknowledged in your review. I don’t think this is a typical Oscar bait film by any means. It’s rather silly and strange. I do think it is shallow in its style and commentary. It’s clearly going for an almost Del Toro thing by reshaping reality through the fantastical lens, trying to understand reality through poetic fiction and fairy tales. It doesn’t really stick the landing though.

    Watched “Shampoo” with Warren Beatty from 1975 last night remember when movies were mature and interesting to watch and performances were expected? Anyway watching that got me thinking about that and movies like Network etc

    I think she doesn't deserve to be in Diana's biography role movie, cause she has ever had an affair in a real life with a married man and she is not continuing her sequel movie"hunstman" because of the published scandal.

    Even though I'm interested in seeing this, I have a reservation. I discovered Diana's death in the Sunday morning paper. I was crushed. Afterwards I spent hours watching the funeral. Finally I had to turn it off because I realized the depression was eating me up. It wasn't mentally healthy. I don't want to revisit that feeling.

    Honestly, I like Emma Corrin's Diana over Kirsten Stewart's portrayal. Kirsten Stewart definitely nailed the mannerisms and portrayed the expressive emotion to raw levels. But I feel Emma's portrayal is more nuanced and subtle, where you feel more bottled up pain with no real cathartic release.

    One of those films where I can totally recognize it's a bad script full of underlined obviousness, but I just got swept away by the storytelling anyway. Ghostly movie really, not just in terms of Diana, even everyone else around the palace other than the two princes feels like an oppressive phantom.

    • @deepfocuslens

      The "meat" of the narrative. Characters, subplots, etc..

    • @sandorx4
      @sandorx4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@deepfocuslens I'm not sure that's what cinema is all about. I rather see it as a necessary evil (quite often unnecessary, in fact) to hang the actual cinematic qualities on. Altman used to talk in such terms, and I agree with him.

    • @deepfocuslens
      @deepfocuslens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sandorx4 I agree. And I mentioned that many great postmodern filmmakers could cleverly implement very abstract and unique visual metaphors within a more skeletal narrative, and it works brilliantly. All films have narrative. All films have content within that narrative. This film for me was full of cookie-cutter, overwrought ideas that provided nothing beyond a shell of depth. Seems a bit counterintuitive to the overall intent. That is my complaint.

    • @avanishdutta2658
      @avanishdutta2658 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not feeling it. Content of Narrative? I would not call it content. What you put in youtube is content. I mean creators. This movie is cinema. Direction, cinematography, screenplay, editing. It's a psychological fever dream which dares to explore its subject with depth and nuance. Until......you offend everybody how this is not diana because this is not her. That's idiotic. To all the ones in audience who gave it a negative review based on potrayal of diana, did you know her personally? Were you close to her? This was a different and more intimate look at her, beyong the media and people's perception of 'princess'. Remember, they are people too. She might be an icon, but she is no different than us. So, it makes sense that this portrays her in this way. Monotonous and melancholic.
      So whatever you think, its good. And more than that, biographical films have little to no creativity, as its difficult to fictionalize true events you heard or witnessed.
      This is what i had to say.

    For me, the journey to her childhood home wearing the dinner dress is surrealist not actual. I am not even sure in reality that her childhood family home is that close to Sandringham Castle. This is more a psychological character study, rather than a historic bio.

    I agree with you. I thought the film was more artistic than something that could really have been. It does not seem like a fable that could have been based on a real tragedy. I feel that Diana's personality was not captured. I do not think the film shows who Diana was really was. Diana was known as "shy Di" when she was alive. I don't think she would have been as aggressive as this Diana. A lot of the film depended on viewers understanding what we believe happened to happened to Diana in the real world before she died. The Diana in the film feels entitled. The ending worked for this film, but the entire film was odd ... too many metaphors, and probably mixed. I do not believe that Stewart used the correct voice for Diana, who had a voice and did not whisper. Sally Hawkins is a wonderful actress. I was disappointed with this movie and It was really built up to be something moving.

    Diana's story has been done to death already. The whole world saw it played out at tedious length in the media. I doubt there's much new to say about it at this point.
    Kristen Stewart knows that doing a dead on impression of a historical figure in a biopic is a direct road to an Oscar nomination. She's trying to show that she can do this kind of highly technical performance.

    • @lc3920
      @lc3920 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The way you describe this director having not seen any of his films, he seems like he's trying to appeal to the modern "feminists" by using historical women (first Jackie Onassis now Princess Diana) while pretending to be artsy and as you said, trying to win Oscars.

      The films from his home country CHILE are very different from his English stuff. He’s a big history guy, re-contextualizing it in his movies.
      Also he writes very few of his scripts. Both Jackie and Ema were written by others and he came on to direct. He doesn’t originate his stories usually.
