  • December can be a busy time in the garden. Planting bare-root fruit trees, harvesting root crops, planting bulbs... In today's video, I show you progress in the home garden and a couple of tasks in the allotment. They include the harvest of a new vegetable, mashua, digging up dahlia tubers to overwinter, and an update on the peas I sowed in the previous garden update. Also a little news on the polytunnel I have planned for the garden!

    Prepare to be blown away by that Arthur Turner blossom in a year or two! I also love the fact that the apples come so early. It fruits super early for me - even here in Yorkshire, I sometimes have a few in July, which come in very handy for jam season. Thanks for sharing your progress with us :)

    Hi Tanya, I've had a few apple trees over the years get canker - some varieties as you know are more susceptible to it, I now try to plant apples local to my area ie NW England such as 'Lord Derby' or other disease resistant apples - I live west of the Pennines so we get the slightly higher rainfall than the eastern side of England. Have a nice Christmas x.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Such a great way to select varieties, Duncan. Choosing ones that grow well locally and that are disease resistant 👍 Canker will probably always be an issue for me to some degree, thanks to the rainfall here, but hopefully the new trees will be healthy despite it 🙂

    Interested to see your apple project. I ordered 7 apple trees this winter. I think I must have seen a video by the man you mentioned because I will also be trellising two apples to to an arch after seeing his trellised trees. Three will also be going up against the garden wall. I will be watching to see how you train yours. The man did amazing things with the trees. Good luck with the new trees.

    Thank you for this video Tanya. Lots of timely tips. My allotment neighbour has very young broad bean sprouts on his plot - sown directly. Beware of mollycoddling such plants.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! Yes, they're most commonly direct sown. Many seeds are, including peas, but I give most of my seeds a healthy start in modules before planting out 🙂

    Our fruit trees have arrived too! We got a Stella cherry too. 2 pears, 4 plums and 11 apple trees! So many!! We've been busy getting them all in, still need to make cages to keep bunnies away. We've also just moved so there's lots of beds to put in, so many rocks here!

      @@Lovelygreens I think we may have overdone it on number of apple trees! But hey ho, we'll see how they do, I'm so excited I want to learn about each variety and it's history. The area we have planted them in gets quite wet in autumn and winter and has clay soil, so we'll just have to hope they do ok. Have a really Merry Christmas Tanya!

    Way overkill if you ask me. Those totem poles of stakes are actually creating the opposite effect of what you want to achieve namely well rooted, free standing, wind proof trees.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trees are Minarettes and the stake length is exactly the length they need, as per the advice from the nursery. They're permanent stakes too.
