Gollies are massively controversial in the UK, just recently a pub was closed down after the landlord refused to remove their Golly collection. If someone tried to sell them on it might be a hard sell.

Robertson`s jam and marmalade was made here in Paisley. The factory has gone now. The guy is right when he said you saved up the wee cutouts on the label and sent a set amount in for an enamel badge.
I have a jar of Golden Shred marmalade in my kitchen which i put on my toast in the mornings.

We in the UK loved the Golly. Im afraid its now banned due to racism etc but very very collectable. Robinsons Golly was a british icon and kids everywhere dids indeed send off and collect tokens etc to trade for the Golly. Also the Golly was on every jam,marmalade label etc and the token on the back.

14:24 Can confirm. Auntie in England was a Goliwog collector (as all good aunties were) and around 2000, no proper retail sales of them. This started a mini-cottage industry of aunties hand-making them at home or as he suggests, possibly a factory insider running off a string of them for private sales only. This was like a huge 'politically correct' story back then so this brought back some memories.
I always found Golliwogs to be creepy but yes their are collectors that love them
It wasn't an issue when they were being produced at first, only in the 80s - and it still took 20 years for them to drop it.
We just thought that (in the 60s & 70s) white people had white dolls, and black people had black dolls, calling it racist was a little off. It was never meant in that way, rather as a celebration of culture.
In one newspaper they reported that "During the first half of the twentieth century, the Golliwog was a children's favourite, exceeded in popularity only by the Teddy Bear."

That’s right, I forgot they were called that. I think my grandma had some goliwog stuff when I was a kid from Scotland BTW. I remember him being in adverts etc.

We English are so typically eccentric in a wonderful way. Like him I’ve spent nearly half a century collecting weird and quirky nostalgia. Sad I don’t have a shop like this near me in southern England as I’m soon to be moving to a smaller home and I need to part with so much stuff, including the bulk of my 200+ pig collection!! Just worries me I’d sell all my stuff only to buy loads more stuff to replace it all. Way too tempting!! 😂
I’ve memories of excitedly waiting for a jar of jam or marmalade to finish so we could collect another Golly token from the label. My brother still has all the badges we collected as children. The Golly collectibles stopped in the late 70’s/early 80’s as it was decided that they were no longer racially acceptable.

@@donshields2379 when they get older you can see that they have a bit more trouble with jumping and getting around, our sweetie just passed at 20yrs 4 months last August. She stopped jumping up, let us pick her up. We had stairs up to our bed for her.

the golliwog things are worth good money, they are banned here now and are hard to find, originals are worth a lot, and are easy to tell apart from recently made copies, in my childhood we had loads of this stuff but nobody ever kept them but we wish we had,
