    Hey mate. Great video. I am the maker of the sd2iec you are using. You can save the drive settings to eprom using
    OPEN15,8,15:PRINT#15,"XW":CLOSE15
    That is why I did not put in device id switches. ;)

      Thanks, I wasn't aware of that one. Personally I still prefer switches over typing commands but it's good to know it can be saved in the SD2IEC EEPROM. Just looking at the SD2IEC readme now, and there's a few other features I wasn't aware of. Interesting...

      @@TheRetroChannel I just keep a little program on my sdcard that I run to switch between ID8 and ID9 when required.

    The 60k image of Oink! was without a doubt dumped using a freezer cartridge. Loading those on a machine that doesn't have the same freezer is a gamble. The question isn't why it won't load, but why it does load with SD1k. It's possible they have some hacks to detect/patch freezer dumps.

    Very nice setup of the SD card. Will look a redoing my one. Thanks.

      Hey Glen, I noticed you posted another comment about where to find the SD2IEC. It only shows me the first line of your comment so I'm making an assumption that it contained an external link and TH-cam has automatically removed it. Sorry about that, even though I have all "spam filtering" turned off, TH-cam takes it upon themselves to remove any mentions of a site that isn't TH-cam as heaven forbid you go to a website that isn't TH-cam

      @@TheRetroChannel Thanks for the heads up. I did wonder if that might happen. I’ll keep it in mind for the next time I answer, to just spell it out rather than drop a link directly 👍

    The weird filenames are the 8.3 DOS filenames associated with FAT32 Long File Names (LFNs). They're always 6~1.3 and the 0xff ~ character is checkerboard or Pi in PETSCII. The likely scenario is that if the FAT32 filename is longer than the CBM DOS limit of 16 characters, it uses the 8.3 instead of the LFN.

    • @TheUtuber999
      @TheUtuber999 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are correct. CHR$(126) is the tilde character on PCs, whereas the same PETSCII character code is the Pi symbol.

    The difference between stock C64 FB1K and Jiffy C64 is due to the sjload (used by FB1K) turning off the VICII chip during loading. Goes to show the amount of cycles are consumed by bad lines.

    • @TheRetroChannel
      @TheRetroChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, although I didn't put the percentages in the video loading appears to be around 11% faster just by disabling the VIC-II

      @@TheRetroChannel Also, a tip for SD2IEC/Pi1541 users that want JiffyDOS (or any other Kernal replacement) over Epyx Fastloader but don't want to open up their machine to install it is it use an EasyFlash3 cartridge.

    • @TheRetroChannel

      I believe the sidekick64 can also act as a Kernal replacement, but I haven't tried that one yet so don't know how it compares to the ef³

    Very informative video! Thank you very much. There are two questions that came up:
    Does SDBrowse V.4ec work with Pi1541 as well? And whar about FB1K with Pi1541?

    • @TheRetroChannel
      @TheRetroChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From memory I think both of them only work with the SD2IEC

  • @TheUtuber999
    @TheUtuber999 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One odd thing I noticed about the FB1K file browser, though - if you use it with the SD2IEC with Fast Load Combo cartridge to navigate to a folder and then press RUN/STOP to exit to BASIC in that folder, it will also deactivate FastLoad and those wedge commands will be temporarily disabled. You can SYS 57194 to reactivate it, but that's still kind of a pain. Does anyone happen to know which file browser is used within the Kung Fu Flash cartridge? I like the ability to type a few keystrokes and press Return and have the results filtered accordingly.

    • @TheRetroChannel
      @TheRetroChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think you'll be able to find the file browser from the KFF. I'm guessing it was written specifically for that device and would take a number of changes for it to work with anything else.
      As for exiting the FB1K browser, I've never had much of a reason to do so, I just load everything directly from the browser. I'm guessing the fast loading routines from FB1K overwrite the epyx routines

  • @Imperious685

    Thanks for the FB1K info, I'll have to try that. I've been messing about with my c64 and vic20 over the last 2 weeks. For some reason my PI1541 crashes loading occasionally, possible heat issues from 3d printed case. For my vic20 with Penultimate 2 cart I had problems loading a 3k expanded new game called diamonds from my sd2iec, just wouldn't run and I was using the correct FB version. I didn't try the PI1541 with the vic20. Anyway I found if I go to the directory that "diamonds" is in then hit Q then load"diamonds",8 it worked fine. Maybe You could try that with Oink. I assume You know that You can remove the ,prg extension and they will still load fine?

    • @TheRetroChannel
      @TheRetroChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, yeah sounds like there is some conflict with the file browser and that diamonds program. I guess the file browser must be occupying a memory location that diamonds wants (but that's just a guess).
      As for the PRG extensions, yeah I considered removing them but I'd still need the ones for D64, D71 etc, so may as well leave all the extensions on

    Really great video, thanks. One thing I am struggling with... it seems that when I exit FB1k (w/ RUN-STOP key), my FASTLOAD commands no longer function. I went back and tried the same with the straight up "FB" file browser, and after existing (w/ "Q" key), FASTLOAD commands work fine. Any clue on how I could use FB1K and have it NOT clobber my FASTLOAD commands? (perhaps is somehow executes the FASTLOAD "disable" which is built into FASTLOAD...?) THANKS in advance! Jeff

    • @TheRetroChannel
      @TheRetroChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess is the fastloader built into FB1K overwrites the existing fastloader in memory. You may need to stick to using the regular FB filebrowser, and just use FB1K for loading single load PRG files

    Hello, I recently got a Commodore 64, and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find games for the SD2IEC?

    using sd2iec & fastload on a c128/ can't get machine to boot in c128 mode and/or 80 column mode. Any ideas?

    • @TheRetroChannel
      @TheRetroChannel  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 128 sees the epyx fastload as a C64 cartridge, so it will always drop you into 64 mode. You can still use the sd2iec part without plugging in the cartridge but you'll need to supply it with 5v and GND

  • @1invag
    @1invag ปีที่แล้ว

    Is this information still applicable? I ask because I've used an sd2iec+ with an epic fast loader both from the future was 8bit already set up and they use just plain old fb64 and haven't had any issues with speed whatsoever. Loading games just takes a few seconds. Menu browsing is instantaneous. Was something optimised in the interim or is it still worth getting fb1k over fb64

    • @TheRetroChannel
      @TheRetroChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      fb1k will still be faster than fb64, but with the epyx fastloader the difference will be minimal.
