I agree. Ideally, Chantel’s parents should allow her to make her mistakes in her marriage. I feel like it’s a cultural thing difference. There’s a certain respect that American black parents would want at a dinner table. There are times where my friends after getting in a fight would come over and my mom would stop them just like Chantel’s mother is doing rather than avoid the conversation all-together. Not all black families are the same but by large i think how they are going about it is pretty standard. They have welcomed the two to dinner, and expect respect to be given to them as the parents of Chantel. When they speak others should listen and be quiet, no one should be over-talking them since they are the “grown people” or eldest in the room. Also telling a black mother to shut up in any capacity is fighting words. I can’t vouch for any other of the situations they’ve been in but this was one of elder respect. He could have sat quiet and dinner would have gone smoothly.

Not only does she always tell her family everything, she tries to get them to fight her battles and gang up on her husband to try and prove her point.
