Even with strength #1V Stan' is so comfortable: alarity and smoothness. I admire the rich sound a la 'Trane on alto. Ernie Watts, Andy Snitzer, * Wilton Felder and Sonny Stitt, Shawn Wallace, Eric Alexander (recently), are among those tenor saxophone specialists who use alto saxophone very effectively when the occasion so demands it. *used to
The best Selmer ever made. I had one in the 1950th but unfortunately I had to sell it. Damned !!! I now play a Selmer 80 II which I try to make sound like my old one. But to quote : " it will never be the same. I'm still looking for an old Mark 6.
WYATT- CSGO honestly the best advice I have for someone like you is the same thing someone told me. Learn from several records. When I was starting out I had no clue of where to start and I didn't have the money for private lessons. You do have several years and years of available music on albums though. Start with something melodic and not too technical. But I only recommend this after you have at least learned the basics of the instrument. Like getting sound out and basic scales of course
WYATT- CSGO well there's nothing like starting from albums. Miles solo on So What is a good place to start. Yes it's trumpet... but it's very classic and very melodic and not not too technical
+Stantawn Kendrick I know exactly what u mean about the tone. At a point in time, I didn't really listen to tenor much but I started listening to it and I went back to listening to alto again and it sounded weird but I'm a alto player but I like tenor more and that horn sounds amazing.
Jeremy McCant Thanks so much man. I appreciate it. When I made this video... I realized I still enjoyed alto very much lol. I started on alto and I always still try to hear Bird and Cannonball in my tenor playing still. I think tenor though has this bottom to it. It just has a manly kind of lowness to it that I think resonates with me. Now though when I go back to alto... I kinda can still hear the low end of the horn when I play it like I hear on tenor. It's hard to explain. I try to blow toward the bottom of the alto as if it is a tenor. I think I naturally do it now because I play tenor so much it's what I hear lol. It's difficult to put in words. I think I'm going to write some tunes for alto though and spend some time with it. However, most of my time still has to go to tenor. LOL it just takes so much to keep that in shape! Thanks for listening bro and thanks for your comment.
It is Amazing how sweet those Mark VI sound! Doesn't make a difference how long they are in a closet, they definitely have a very distinct sound. Great playing man. Blessings. Are you from NYC?
hmmm that's a tough one. I know Selmer and Yamaha are very trusted brands when it comes to sopranos. They of course make them in varying experience levels which also go up in expense. Intermediate and advanced and professional models. You also could check eBay but I'd be careful of what you are buying and who you are buying it from when shopping there. Making sure they have a high rating.
I think I heard you say that you were playing on a #4-reed. Great Scott Batman...! That’s like playing with a 2x4 attached to your mouth piece....... lol
You think that is hard, have you heard of Jason Marshall? He plays baritone with a JodyJazz DV 10 with a Rico 4 reed. He also said he used to play a Ria 12 mouthpiece with a 5 reed.
whats going my setup now is 1961 mark vi i have three moithpieces to choose from soloist c* short shank and soloist c* long shank and a 1966 soloist C** long shank from your exp give me your opinion on reeds and the mouthpieces thanks
Hey what's going on man. The best thing for you to do is to try out these pieces of course. I really can't comment on an opinion on reeds or those mouthpieces as I have never played those pieces you have or have heard you play them. Also when it comes to those sizes those are relatively close facings. You'd have to try them out to see if they are too close/small for you. I'm not sure what you have been playing on or how long you have been playing for that matter. Also you're going to have to try different brands/strengths of reeds too as well.
I honestly can't play this piece with anything lesser than a 3.5. Everyone is different. For me to use a 2 or 2.5 I'd need to be playing an 8 or 9 on alto
+Money Bytes Only if I'm trying to have some sort of effect on altissimo or distortion in my sound. However I am always playing the pitches I am singing in my head
Great sound on the alto too! Can you tell me how you made that B flat at around 02:10 sound so dirty yet whispery? Doesn't sound like you only used growling. maybe a different fingering? love it
+LeMelleKH2 there's quite a bit man. All the names you'd expect. Johnny Hodges, Bird, Cannonball, Stitt, J Mack, Garrett... there's many names I've digested over the years man. Then I got to the tenor and that changed everything again lol
I've had this horn for about 15 years. I found it in a newspaper ad which a music store had. I paid $2,800 for it... which I know was a steal... but the person really didn't want it anymore and wasn't interested in playing further.
well... when it comes to alto the list isn't that long. I mean... can you really name a good 20 alto players with a lengthy discography you love? On tenor we could go on and on and on. I would say listen to the masters on alto and then... listen to other instruments too horns and rhythm section
Plays 890bpm with ease and a consistent tone quality says "sounds okay"
Bro... I just came upon this video... your tone is amazing!
Thanks brother! Respect your playing a lot!
"It's okay" lol freakin brilliant.
LOOOL! I am humbled man lol. I appreciate the comment

+Wildmayer Marcelin LOL thanks a lot man! Thanks for listening!
Wildmayer Marcelin 6

+Stephen Beck thanks brother! Thanks for the compliment!
Oh man, you're heavy. I've seen your tenor vids but you're slaughtering this alto as well. Very nice Stantawn, very nice.
Wow. This is the sound that I'll try to emulate with my playing. Amazing.
You should play more alto! Sounds great!
Even with strength #1V Stan' is so comfortable: alarity and smoothness.
I admire the rich sound a la 'Trane on alto.

You should check out Martin Committee trumpets, basically the mark 6 of brass. Keep up the great content, subscribed!
Dude, i heard this around 20 times, and i instantly picked up the horn in midnight time to practice. How do you feel about that, huh?
So clean!!
Mouth piece and reed combo is killer… I use a Vandoren B75 with Rico Royal reeds and it’s a pretty explosive sound on a baritone
Great sound sir......I play a Rico A5 alto mouthpiece... I don't know if it's good enough to give a great sound...I really need ur advice
Amazing sound and great sax just bought one off craigslist what is the best way to learn improvisation without lessons
WYATT- CSGO honestly the best advice I have for someone like you is the same thing someone told me. Learn from several records. +Stantawn Kendrick ok thank you! I've been playing for a little over 3 years so I thought it was time to try to learn more improv
WYATT- CSGO well there's nothing like starting from albums. Miles solo on So What is a good place to start. Yes it's trumpet... but it's very classic and very melodic and not not too technical
Dude you should be famous!!

It is Amazing how sweet those Mark VI sound! Doesn't make a difference how long they are in a closet, they definitely have a very distinct sound. Great playing man. Blessings. Are you from NYC?
Yes they are definitely special! Especially if you find a really good one. There ARE some crappy ones out there lol
Hy,what mouthpiece and reeds you use? Thank you
Good sound Stantawn !!!! Wowwww !!!
great sound, really
I checked ebay, $5000 😭 my dream is gone

Man a nice sound 🎶🎶🎷
beautiful man wow great
thanks man I appreciate it!
You gotta start somewhere. Sounds great!
How long have you been playing? Good sound.
Thanks man. I appreciate it. Nearly 20 years.
What is the best soprano sax you can get for the price that has a great sound . I was looking at the mark VI ab it cost around $960 used.
hmmm that's a tough one. I know Selmer and Yamaha are very trusted brands when it comes to sopranos. They of course make them in varying experience levels which also go up in expense. I think I heard you say that you were playing on a #4-reed. Great Scott Batman...! That’s like playing with a 2x4 attached to your mouth piece....... lol
well it all depends on your tip opening and type of reed. ;)

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE IM A BEGINNER LEARNING 2 YEARS NOW
Super sax. Love your sound. Would you test a copy of Mark VI made in china please?
which horn is that you speak of? I haven't heard of these?
I'm talking about a copy of Mark VI made by China
I believe its the JeanPaul As800, it sells for around $1,400. I don't have one am saving to buy one.
Merci beaucoup l'Ami !!!
Sounds a little dark with the soloist mouthpiece but your technique is excellent. I would like to hear you with the ottolink hard rubber if possible.
on alto? I apologize but don't own one. Only Selmers and Meyers on alto
Impressive.
Soloist is the perfect match!
sweet sound of the horn...
Thanks!
How do you like playing on a thicker reed vs the response from that piece on a 2 or 2.5?
I honestly can't play this piece with anything lesser than a 3.5. Everyone is different. For me to use a 2 or 2.5 I'd need to be playing an 8 or 9 on alto
+StantawnKendrick Hey, Do you hum/sing pitch(s) while you play?
+Money Bytes Only if I'm trying to have some sort of effect on altissimo or distortion in my sound. However I am always playing the pitches I am singing in my head
Would you ever sell that horn?
+Yolo_swaggatron never ever ever ever lol. Thanks for watching!
Great sound on the alto too! Can you tell me how you made that B flat at around 02:10 sound so dirty yet whispery? Doesn't sound like you only used growling. maybe a different fingering? love it
subtone :) you're playing the note without the core just air. I'll explain in a future video
Stantawn Kendrick thanks! Looking forward to it
Who are some of your alto inspirations? Diggin' the tone!
+LeMelleKH2 there's quite a bit man. All the names you'd expect. Johnny Hodges, Bird, Cannonball, Stitt, J Mack, Garrett... there's many names I've digested over the years man. Then I got to the tenor and that changed everything again lol
+Stantawn Kendrick Yeah, I see what you mean. I've been trying to balance the two, hahaha.
How long have you had this horn, and could you tell me the price it was when you bought it?
I've had this horn for about 15 years. I found it in a newspaper ad which a music store had. I paid $2,800 for it... which I know was a steal... but the person really didn't want it anymore and wasn't interested in playing further.
"it's ok" :-) What are you like? You sound amazing ........... end of.......Keep going because I love your suff.

Who are your main influences on alto
well... when it comes to alto the list isn't that long. I mean... can you really name a good 20 alto players with a lengthy discography you love? On tenor we could go on and on and on. I would say listen to the masters on alto and then... listen to other instruments too horns and rhythm section

Hhaha he aint never gonna sell that horn. Less of a chance than him selling one of his 10 thousand mouthpieces..
Great sound my man! I have a question What goes through your head when your playing sixteenth note runs?
honestly... what you hear come out. I'm not really thinking anything literal or academic. I try to play exactly what I hear in my head.
se oye fino men
Can I get your email man? I would like total you some questions, if you don't mind...
Cheeks like Dizzy
