Your talking voice , the fullness of it probably contributes to your sound
The metal tone master has a more focused and centered sound. It is also slightly brighter. The hard rubber selmer soloist has a more spread sound and is a little darker sounding. The soloist sound can be used anywhere and the metal is a little more useful when performing rock because it matches the sounds of more contemporary artists. Many artists use different set ups for the type of work they are doing. We all want to fit into the genre and style needed to be more successful. That being said, the long tones you do have enabled you to develop a wonderful tone on all your mouthpieces. Your sound is awesome and your can play any mouthpiece or horn and make it sound fantastic. Your silver selmer is really special. I was also wondering about something you may know about. When having a horn refinished they sometimes ruin it striping off the old laquer and re laquering it. Silver horns don't have that same problem because they can just replace over the silver that is there and not loose the brass underneath. The result should be a great looking job with no change in tone. I know gold over silver will cause more resistance when playing but I don't think replating silver will change anything except the way the horn shines. Like to know what your experience has been with that or what you think. Thanks for your great videos and the best to you. Patrick

I liked them both. The Otto Link Tone master sounded smooth but edgy, while the Selmer Soloist sounded more powerful, and a little sketchy. Some great advice.
Yeah these are an extreme difference which is what I was tying to show. They are vastly different. It would have been a bit closer comparison had I tried like a Tone Master and Tone Edge. But these lol.... oil and water

Mr kendrick you sound real good on the tone master. I have the 1st metal mouth pirce otto link made the master link facing 5 very open. I saw your metal mouth piece n i just brought the otto link Super tone master 8 . I cant wait to try it. Im using a Vandorne v16 on it n the green on the master link. Your soloist mout piece is good. Some artist use 1 mouth piece on 1 side of the album. N the other mouth piece on side 2 of the album.

I wanted to tell you what I blurted out loud to no one in the house as I was watching this video: "You're a NICE man!" Totally spontaneous and sincere. I don't know you, but this video was the second I've seen. I've read the comments below. I'll be concentrating a lot more on long tones for sure. Yours is a lovely tone. I think I preferred the 1st mouthpiece, the Ottolink. I don't use a metal mouthpiece. I'm a hobby player. I'm playing a1932 CONN 10M with a rubber Ottolink 7 and I just put on a Vandoren #3 reed and I like what's happening!!! Thanks for your videos. You play pretty music.

Sir I have a 1933 Otto link Master link low baffle wide chamber facing 5 for Tenor .I love your sound on the metal cause I love the Otto link sound yours is smooth with excellent flavor please play Alto more your videos are really helping me I played Otto link that mouth bbn piece for 40 yrs I have a metal selmer 1955

Hey totally agree man - I used to play exclusively on a whack of Florida links and they went so straight out into the crowd it was nuts but I've been playing on a short shank soloist, same thing 7* BP as you and I like how it projects not only forward but to all sides. Now getting more vintage rubber links, I think I've switched to rubber full time now! Anyways love the vids and the playing, keep em coming! Btw I think we talked on SOTW not long ago!

I haven't been a member for that long but it's definitely a great place for saxophonist to discuss all of our tech stuff lol
Very nice. The Tone Master was brighter than I thought it would be, but the articulation was more crisp. The articulation on the Soloist was very soft, almost blurred by comparison...also less like a Link obviously. Just my .02.

I like the metal mouthpiece because has a balanced tone. Especially in high notes Otto Link is more warm, and has more low frequencies. Selmer is a little bit noisy in high notes, but sounds also very good.. Nice video!!
In the practice room, Soloists are without question, my favorite mouthpieces. I love their warmth and the way their "roundness" seems to really fill up the room.
However, once I started playing in an electric band with five string bass, drums, guitar, keys, and trombone, I quickly realized a lot of that beautiful sound (especially in the low midrange) was getting covered by the other instruments, so I switched to a HR Link copy that is bit brighter and cuts through the mix better. As you pointed out, so much depends on context.
As for my favorite in this clip, any piece that YOU play is my favorite!
thanks a lot Quinn. Yup I came to the same conclusion. Soloist is a beautiful mouthpiece... but it's still going to depend on the context. I try to have a similar sound on any piece I play so I can know it's me doing the work and just a little coming from the piece. But yeah... I play on metal Links or Hard rubber Links mostly. I try to have a sound that's universal that will fit in any setting. It gets tricky sometimes bro lol. I appreciate the comment man
There is a remarkable difference between the pieces. My favorite for you is the Soloist for sure! I don't have the right adjectives to describe it, so I'll go with the standard - warm.
You kill me on both mouthpieces with your sound. On the Otto Link Tone Master you have this big ass sound that is very reminiscent of Trane, maybe that's because Trane is one of your influences, whatever the case I love it.
On the Selmer Soloist, I hate to admit it but you sound like Joe henderson and yes, once again you sound great. As far as which one I prefer, I'm really feeling the Otto Link because of the big huge sound. Keep the videos coming brother, you have a great sound and great improvisation skills. DAMN I WISH YOU LIVED IN MICHIGAN SO I COULD STUDY WITH YOU
LOL!!!! I appreciate it homie! Well it's hard to get away from both Trane or Joe Hen when we talking about these 2 pieces. They were their signature pieces of course. When I play these... even if I haven't listened to Trane or Joe in a minute... those influences immediately return lol. It's no escaping it. I really appreciate the comment though man those are some HUGE giants you are mentioning lol. Their shoes are bigger than Shaq's lol.

I play modern Soloists D (I heard they’re close to the short shank ones) on both my alto & tenor. They sound bright in high tones and mellow in low. Love them over the Otto Link. Keep your videos coming our way Stantawn, great job 👍🏼😉
I've never played one of the newer ones! But if you feel comfortable with it that's the most important thing!
I personally liked Selmer soloist because of the intonation the accents it showed and overall the sound

You sound lovely on both mouthpieces, but I prefer the Otto Link Tone Master. To me, the Otto Master has a crisper (clear) and clean sound. I like the melody with the Otto Master better than with the Selmer Soloist.

wider rubber mouthpieces help me play on narrower metal ones. I think it's important to be well-versed in both, just as you said, especially considering situation.

Man, beautiful videos on your channel! I love it. I have a question. Are you sure that working on multiple mouthpieces gave you more opportunities to develop!? I mean, I think instead that a mouthpiece can give you a direction and you can work on it, but, by time you’ll learn to do things automatically for this mouthpiece and them don’t necessarily work on others! They could or not. But, changing is loosing them. Yeah, maybe you can develop more in a different direction with a different mouthpiece, and you cold like it. That’s what I think, what do you think about it?

Curious about your long tone studies. Jody Jazz Hr is nice, Vandoren's T6...love to hear you compare it with the Vintage soloist. Appreciating your audio setup too. You are capturing the full range of the horn very well. ANd... you sound great on both. I am a fan of both sounds and attempt both textures in my playing. That soloist gets all the way into Joe. Wow! You sound great on both. What I notice is that your tone is consistent despite range. I've been playing 30+years and still sound tonally different across the ranges. Partly....my issue is reed care.
Thanks so much for your comment. I have devoted myself to long tones... everyday. I've tried to stick to this for the past decade. Even before gigs too as well. I think the more you do long tone the more you become one with the instrument and your inner sound regardless of setup. Muscle memory, air speed how to breathe all of that... is second nature after doing long tones for so many days and years. I don't have anything fancy I do other than hold notes out full and as long as I can, be it soft or loud... every register.

"Christmas Time is Here" great tune ( anecdotally! Eddie Harris played on a SS Selmer also, apparently a C* ) I think you sound amazing on both pieces, but for me personally I preferred the Selmer.. I can't really explain why? I guess it sounded warmer but edgier at the same time? Caveat Emptor to me?? If that makes any sense.
most people that have heard me play both pieces prefer me on the Selmer. They really can't say why. It's just something about it they say. They like the link... they think I have a great sound on a hard rubber or metal link... but they still pick the Selmer lol. However, they always say they hate the Selmer for themselves. I think it just agrees with me for some reason so I keep using it lol

Thanks for the video. Good topic. The Selmer was brighter. I personally liked the more blue sound of the Otto Link. I am currently using a Vandoren T-75. If that falls in the hard rubber type you mentioned, I would love your thoughts or a video on those. What material was the black Selmer made from?

old Otto link mouthpieces were the best most of the big tenor players played on them the selmer soloist are great to and your right joe Henderson played on one and his sound was great the metal Otto link is to me has a dark sound the rubber mouthpiece is bright and fuffy both are great
+chriss1152 thanks so much for the comment bro and you are right Otto Links are amazing. I have 2 vintage metal ones and I use my FL Link the most. You can make it be whatever you want it to be. That's why all those jazz masters all sounded different regardless that they used them a lot lol

Definitely the soloist sounds better to my ears, full and mellow. The metal one is a little harsh, not totally unpleasant (both sound terrific) but still.

Hi Stabtawn Like your tones and advice. Got to say i like the soloist (F) best as I have one a I try the tone master also which i left alone. I not long being playing (cannot find Good tutor where I live in the uk. Now i have a ? for you. I try rubber & metal. I find rubber are large in your mouth and metal are a lot smaller like the (Beechlers) Can you recc a few metal for alto (54ref new style) which are small and can give me a warm tone going to older style of jazz sound that I can buy straight out the box new only. I being looking a selmer jazz D/E and the Berg larsen 95 bronze. I use 2-2.5 reed R/Vandoren I also play a soprano and wat do you think of thes straight tenor and alto Dakota sax ?

I just started watching your videos. Love your sound! I'm ready for the altissimo range. Can you give some advise and some instructions?
First you should practice "overtones" to learn how to use your throat. Altissimo is really about your throat and your adam's apple and controlling that. Think about how it moves when you yawn.... how you can roll it down and up. That's where it starts.
I play through my PA, replicating that big fat Gene Ammons sound. I position the PA speakers accordingly, and can hear what the people hear. Problem solved! Can do the same with small acoustic Jazz groups. Works for me!

Bro, I'm not a consistent player, been going in and out almost 10 years, financial problems and parenthood...life... but to the point, always want to try a metal MP but in my country (argentina) they cost a lot and of course not its not so easy to resale them , i have the oportunity to buy on the us or europe, cant test them until shipping arrive, what models would you recomend?? I'm actually playing a Aizen rubber MP 7 otto link type chamber on tenor sax.

yeah this is a pretty hard thing to recommend. If you're going to buy used mouthpieces... eBay is probably the way to go. There is junkdude too as well... is a website that sales used pieces. As far as to what to recommend? That depends on what kind of sound are you going for... first I'd narrow it down to what brand of mouthpiece then what kind of chamber, and tip opening etc. There's Otto Links, Guardalas etc. There's vintage pieces... modern pieces
I have a link that I enjoy, but after 10min I am finding my jaw is having to stick out to get response, and quickly becomes painful. does that sound like a mouthpiece face/tip problem?
That's pretty hard to tell without being in person. It could even be the reed strengths you are using. Do you have a professional that you know that can give you some feedback?
My rubber mouthpieces seem to be much mellower than the metal ones,4's against 7's

yeah during this time I just had started using a better mic than my iPhone. I didn't realize I had to change levels when I'm talking vs when I'm playing. I corrected this issue all videos afterwards
this video volume is quite low. still following though.
yeah I forgot to adjust the mic for my talking level... it was set for the saxophone level
What you say is true but tone has become so overrated that it has transcended the importance of playing great lines. My first rule, don’t switch. It’s a Pandora’s box and will do more harm than good, especially for young layers.
