For those confused about the pronunciation: it’s the pronunciation of “ふとん” (fu-to-n). The “と”(to) is always pronounced “TOE” in Japanese. It doesn’t change depending on the word. In English was are more flexible (my AP English teacher would probably say lazy in some cases lmao) with pronunciation. Words can also be pronounced totally different than how it looks like they’re spelled. A word with “to” can be pronounced as too, toe, tah, etc due to actual pronunciation or the speakers personal “flexibility”. So we mispronounce Japanese words often (footawn, Sakee, Areegatoe, Saiyuhnaruh, kareeokee, etc). Japanese “letters” (hiragana) will pretty much always have the same pronunciation. It does not change based on the word. It’s easier to understand/pick up on Japanese pronunciation when you learn the Japanese “alphabet” (hiragana), which is super simple and fun to learn!!

I love putting my top bedding outside during the day. I sleep with my window opened all the time even in the wintertime. I live where there is a change of seasons. I RARELY get sick. Love this type of bedding!

I live in sweden and me and my siblings sleept in our parents room at least until we where 10 or even older, found it cozy. But that was a real big bed.

Hi,….Im an 83 year old woman from Canada and have been sleeping on a buckwheat pillow ( I have several different sizes) since 1995 when I visited my daughter in Japan . I love them.

This was very educational and interesting. I am in southeast USA and just started *FLOOR SLEEPING* and trying to decide on traditional Japanese bedding. Seems to me that we all suffer from moldy, dust-mite filled beds because we are not able to "air out" our heavy mattresses but conversely, I air out my Persian rugs at least quarterly. I am now sleeping on a yoga mat, atop a Persian rug runner, which at age 67, in only two nights, initially, has relieved me _... at least temporarily...._ from the burden of long-time debilitating chronic muscle tension and stress. I want to sleep on a tatami mat, with perhaps a very thin futon, but also might not even use a futon at all. I would always continue to sleep on my sheepskin pad, which gets washed weekly. I will switch from queen size to long-twin size bedding for ease of logistics... hanging out ( or in ) etc. As I have hardwood floors, I especially appreciate your comments about moisture issues, but a 3/16" thick yoga mat under your futon will likely mitigate this. I might buy several tatami, and create a "tatami-space" within my 20' x 14' bedroom. I can go for maximum esthetics ( sojis etc ) because I am retired and not raising a family. Please don't let your wife switch to a western style hellish death-bed. _( I have "indoor footware" because I too cannot stand the thought of using refueling cars, using public bathrooms etc , and then walking all over my Persian rugs etc with those "outdoor" shoes. Gross! )_

I bought my futon from Nitori and it has anti-fungal treatment. It is wider than yours. Even when it looks thin, futons are very comfortable.
You can clean down with your own machine (assuming it fits in Japanese machines) but you can't use regular detergent. You need special detergent that doesn't clump up the feathers. You can also add specialty balls (or even tennis balls) that bounce around to prevent clumping.

When I lived in Japan in the mid-nineties, I lived in a danchi apartment that had tatami in both bedrooms and the living room. I really liked it. They're cushiony and If they get dinged up, you can flip them over or you can swap them out with others in the corner. 😂

I find futon much more comfortable than beds, but I'm super paranoid about spiders or whatever crawls on the floor at night. 😣
lol. I luv my Sobakawa pillow! I fall asleep WAY more easily and get a deeper sleep!

i have a tatami layer and then on top of it i have a futon. i have been sleeping this way since the 2018. it's better for my back. it feels strange when i sleep on a regular soft matress.

Can you request the thickness of the futon when you stay at a ryokan, also what type of pillow. I have tried the soba type pillow and the micro bead and could not get comfortable on those at all.
Aloha John. Shucks... missed this one. Been getting ready for my trip to Maryland and the frigid weather. Wondered how Tatami Mats are in the winter. Western bedding keeps you off the cold floor so are Tatami Mats able to provide warmth? Mahalo my friend.

Even a Japanese site was foo tun(like ton) Just curious how you call it a foo tone. 🤷🤔 John the traditional japanese pillow is filled with buckwheat(soba) you can still find them. The vowels don’t change sound. I don’t know why or how it became Fu-tawn. Sounds like the way westerners say Karaoke (Care-EE-oki) and Sake (Saki) 🤷🏻♂️
It’s the Japanese pronunciation of “とん” (to-n”). In English we can be kind of flexible with how we pronounce things like “to”. It could sound like toe, too, tah, etc. So even though the spelling is “futOn” we pronounce it “futAWN”. But in Japanese there isn’t the same flexibility. All the words will always have strictly the same pronunciation as the spelling. So “と” (to) is always going to be pronounced as “toe” (literally T sound O sound).
I have seen amazon japan and futon. What should you choose to have futon both under you and over you? What is the name of the wood thing that you could have under the futon? What pillow goes with the futon?

Aren't they more.commonly called shikibuton/kakebuton?
Same way maki sushi is normally called makizushi.
Either way, enjoyed the video. We have two futons here in Canada but rarely use them as our floor gets rather cold in the winter and a bed just makes more sense.
I want it easy for people to search it and in English, it’s written “kake-futon” mostly and I didn’t want to teach Japanese. I also pronounce Futon the Japanese way and didn’t even thing of the western way for that so 🤷🏻♂️

I had one of those the buckwheat hull pillows. Hard as a rock. I found later another buckwheat hull pillows with less of the substance in it. It's cool in the summer and warm in the winter. After seeing this episode I am thinking tatami mats in a tiny house loft would be really nice.🎐

No, but people do … dressers, kotatsu, powder room tables - I’ve seen all kinds of stuff in tatami rooms.

We have tatami, we do not have super heavy furniture but we put these little protective stopper things under the legs of stuff to protect it from damaging it too much. We bought those at daiso or nittori I believe?

There are no springs, nor metal in japanese futon. It is told to be a major reason for the lower rates of cancer in Japan...
I doubt there is any medical proof in that but I remember it toughening me up, body sore the first couple weeks I moved to Japan like I’d worked out. Got used to it.
I’ve known many people with cancer here.

We have futons but my sons have frames look like a couch till folded out
We had those when I was in college too! Sold at bath beds beyond or some store like that 😂 for $99 or less, usually the cheapest way to get both bed and sofa in one! I was shocked when I got here and said “THAT’S a futon?!?”

If you’re not moving to Japan, it’s probably pointless. But those who are interested in Japanese furnishings, increasing in the west, it’s valuable. Just depends. I got a new futon today. Seems like a good chance.
