You've got what looks like 3" furrings on top of your 6" joists. What was your reasoning behind not using say an 8x2" and laying it to falls? (spanning perpendicular to your current roof). An 8x2 joist will be good for 4.5-5m ish at 400 centres. Especially as it's a "light weight roof". Also are you going for a warm deck? The steels are around 500 times as thermally conductive as timber this can create some serious cold bridges unless detailed correctly.
Great video! I have to say that your roof is the most structurally sound I’ve seen out of all the garden rooms/shed/studio tutorials on TH-cam. Are the metal beams pricey? Great work please keep sharing.
Hi Nobby, yeah they cost about £500. I have had issues with saggy roofs before and with the UK planning permission requirement that its overall height is less than 2550mm i couldn't fit 200mm x 50mm timber beams in so using the steels helps me have use 150mm x 50mm timbers but without the risk of sagging.
@@makemore4515 thanks for the reply and yes makes perfect sense now and I’ve had some issues with my roof but more with the Corrugated sheets I used on top and condensation on the inside, I will use a EPDM roof next time. I may ask you some more questions so sorry to be a pain.
That roof is mega… I’m surprised you didn’t go with SIPs or Insulated box profile. They’d do the span without any need for joists and cut out all the timber and steel work!
Hey The 1964, yes i will. Its been really busy for me at the moment and i have a couple of new projects on the way too so just trying to work out how to fit it all in.
UK planning height restrictions mean i couldn't use a 10x2 without going through the planning process with the council with is slow and expensive. This is my work around.
I thought with the size of the build and the distance between your property planning would have been necessary.. I only mention as I’ve applied with Canterbury council due to being over 10 square metres Great work by the way
@@makemore4515 so you still need planning permission if it's smaller than the permitted size that you are allowed to build without planning permission, if it's built from brick?
You and your poor wife's back. A couple tips...buy or build a saw stand. Also less teeth in the chop saw will make life easier.
Really taking shape now. I hope you’re keeping the spoil mound in the front, it seems to be your dogs favourite lookout spot!
She will be lost without it!! haha

Superb series fella, thank you!! Does the osb cope with rain ok?
Thanks. Well its completely covered so in theory it won't get wet. OSB is fine as long as it doesn't get wet.
Good work. What's your roof covering going to be? EDPM?
Yep.
The build vids are great really inspiring. Are you doing anymore sketchup tutorials soon.

Now get your RSJs..😳
Why use steels .would 10x2 not big enough ?

Why would you choose to make a building like this out of timber and not brick?
Because it doesn't need planning permission out of timber.
