This is just heartbreaking to see Superman break down like this since we don't usually see such a vulnerable side of Clark like this as he doesn't deserve this torture or to think of himself as weapon, and it seems like now General Lane finally starting to realize that Superman wasnt the alien that attacked him long ago.
Well, no -- and Clark himself will realize the same thing once he has a moment to catch his breath. Whoever that other guy in a cape was, (a) he was already a grown man (assuming he was a man) at a time when Clark was just a baby, and (b) he's in battle armor -- something Clark doesn't need.
My guess is that the adult Kryptonian that the General met was either just a random Kryptonian or General Zodd since he’s been depicted as the invade first, make peace talks never kind of guy. Maybe trying to conquer Earth without following the laws of their planet is what got Zodd banished to the Phantom Zone along with his subordinates.
@@spenserfarman3045 That's an awesome theory and sounds pretty in character for Zod. It could've also been the Eradicator, i.e. Kryptonian ancient weapon. Yeah, exactly. I think it's at this point he realizes he didn't capture an alien invader, he captured a young man who's as terrified and confused as he is.
I loved that they showed us the General’s reaction to Clark’s despair, that moment of realisation that the person before him is just some kid he’s kidnapped off the streets, purely because they resemble someone the General fought against in the past. When first watching this series, I recognised Amanda Waller right away, kinda hard not to. This guy however, I had no clue who he was at first, so I just assumed he was someone new that this particular series was introducing, and my first impression was not very good, his only redeeming quality was that he let Superman go when ordinary people were put in danger. To that I was like “okay, he doesn’t like Supes, but at least he’s not an a**hole who’ll allow civilians to be hurt for his ambition.” Then this scene rolled up, and it gave us so much insight into the General’s character, and that moment of “Oh S***, what have I done,” redeemed the General in my eyes.
You can see in the generals eyes when superman starts crying, he is looks dumfound with a look of shame and suprise that a supposed alien super soilder weapon is still a person inside, lost confused and scared in unknown world that lacks the memories of his original homeworld.
He probably imagined this moment for a long time. What he would say and how his "enemy" would likely bite back. This was not what he would have ever expected.

Superman‘s vulnerability was really well-written here. At first time I thought he said those two lines out of grief over Zero Day, but I realised that he asked them out of self-doubt, like he was supposed to say "I always thought that I was brought here for good", then he questioned his own purpose of life, ie "Why did they do this(made/sent me as a weapon)?" Come on, General! Enough is enough! Look at him! Hasn't it occurred to you that maybe you've got the wrong guy?! So, what if his powers are somewhat similar to theirs? That doesn't change the fact that all he ever wanted was to make sure the innocent people on Earth would be safe, unlike that space army. Heck, if they ever did come down again, Superman would stop them no matter the cost. He may come from another planet, but Earth is his home! It's been that way ever since. This episode single handedly redeemed General Lane for me. Until this point, I honestly didn't find him that interesting as a villain. With the way he was being positioned in the story, it felt like he was just going to be another hardened government guy with a strandard motive. But then this episode brought out his backstory, the reason for his excessive brutality and fear, and his behaviour suddenly made a degree of sense. Then in this scene, when Clark pours his heart out to him, Lane hesistates - this monster he's tried to desperately to kill, now is more human than he wanted to believe. The doubt creeps back in, and with that Lane's human side now starts to show itself. All that combined the reveal from episode 10...there's now a lot more options for this character going forward.
