    The thing about Slash model guitars that always makes me smile is that Appetite For Destruction was not recorded with a Gibson Les Paul but a replica. (As all of us already know the story). Slash is a great player but I still think that fact is funny.

      High price tag for Gibson making a replica of a replica.
      Certainly one of the best ironies of this market.

      To me it is even more ironic that so many artists have signature models of a guitar that is already Les Paul’s signature model.
      I’ve been waiting for over 30 years for a Strat player to tell Fender that they want their signature Strat to be an Eric Clapton signature model.

    • @Frosenborg
      @Frosenborg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yep, as an added funny aspect. The Seymour Duncan pickups in his original, Derrig Les Paul quit working last week or so and he had them replaced with his signature Seymour Duncan pickups, not with the Gibson Slashbuckers..

    • @Panic42000
      @Panic42000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To be honest that replica guitar Slash got is actually closer to a real Gibson Les Paul then the ones made today.

    • @Panic42000
      @Panic42000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Frosenborg That’s probably because he has a contract with SD and has to use them. That’s why they can’t call them Slashbuckers anymore. What’s really funny is Derrig said those were just some pickups he had laying around.

    Frusciante’s said no a number of times. Every time they asked him for a sig series, he said he only plays old guitars, so selling a sig to “sound like him” felt insincere in a way.

    If you think about it, every Les Paul ever made is a Signature guitar. It's like when Gretsch approached Horton Heat to make his signature guitar. His response was "my guitar is a Chet Atkins Country Gentleman. It's already a signature." Props to the marketing man who successfully argued against that logic.

    I like signature guitars when they’re actually their design- EVH, Bo Diddley, Jem, Red Special- but I really don’t see the point of a Paul or a Strat painted a certain colour with a signature on the headstock and an extra zero on the price.

      All the signature guitars that I have EOB Strat, Robert Cray Strat, Flea Jazz Bass and J Mascis Jazzmaster (+ 13 non signature instruments) Appart of obvious differences as sustainer or hardtail strat there are very personal choices such as neck carve and other little touches. On all of these instruments I got cca 15-20% off the standard prices here in Europe (eob and flea 860 euro each, Cray 500 euro and J Mascis 420 or so) on for some extra 20% price over player series they provide based on my experience more resonant, more personal and overall keepers in collection. I like these instruments for what makes them connect with me differently.

      Didn't Gibson do 3 or 4 John Lennon 160's with the original burst, the psychedelic paintjob, then the stripped bare wood finish as he did with his 'original'. As well as an 'anniversary' John Lennon model which may have had different bracing? I'm not complaining, just commenting. I wouldn't mind a 60's 160e for the right price, lol.

    My favorite example of a signature gone wild is the Music Man Albert Lee model. They made a version of it with Humbuckers (which I own and love) and Al had to have been scratching his head and say "Eh... OK". But then they took it a step further and made it into a bass and called it the "Big Al". I laugh every time I see one because it is such a wonderful departure from what the original purpose of that model was originally.

They mention Jim Adkins in this video and he's openly stated in interviews that part of the reason he got a signature model is that Fender was looking at an opportunity to do a P90 set neck Tele and the timing lined up.

      If I was a great, respected, world famous guitarist and I'd modded my guitar to be really individual and cool and totally my own thing, the last thing I'd want is a bunch of sweaty teenagers with Epiphone versions of my gear and a bunch of blues lawyers with copies of my stuff locked up in a display case. Mod up your own damn guitar!

    I always wanted my own signature guitar even though I am not famous yet. My favorite squeeze is a 1985 Washburn G-10v that I modified just a little. I got rid of the Wonderbar and out in a Kahler cam style. Changed the control knobs to knurled chrome. And changed the single coil pickup covers to expose the pole pieces. Other than that. The pickups are stock!!! Another thing I did was to add a treble cut switch on the tone control to the neck pickup. The result is a very warm and woodsy sound like a humbucker!!! I call it the "mock humbucker"!!! All and all I created an extremely versatile guitar!!!

Jim plays his sigs every gig, and his are all stock, off-the-shelf, guitars.

I didn’t know the artist even until Fender released that Strat and because of that, I got to enjoy H.E.R. for the first time and appreciate the talent! Fender was a little ahead of the curve I feel like with that guitar. Good on them for seeing that talent before others.

    To me, the non-big name signatures ought to have some unique feature even if it's a just a custom color.
    Sonny Landreth Strat with the Tele bridge would be sweet. Might not move the needle on his name alone, but a unique spec.
    And good call on the Springsteen Tele, shocking there's not even a limited custom shop exact re-creation. It's not even stock, so it would not be just another relic butterscotch Tele.

    There are some signature guitars I respect and some that I don't. To use strats as an example because it seems like everybody and their mother can get a Fender sig strat, there are some that if you take the artist's name off, it's basically just a regular strat and part of me thinks what's the point? There are others that only exist because the artist wanted a specific pickup configuration or wiring setup or something else that makes it different to any other strat on the market. That seems more valid to me but even then, some artists with a sig like that might play amazing versions of it from the custom shop while the rest of us are stuck with a made in Mexico version or whatever that the artist wouldn't even be caught dead using. But there are plenty of artists who'll play their sigs right off the shelf and I respect that. As you've pointed out, there's many great artists without sigs that might be deserving, but it's possible some of them don't want to play that game (and maybe some that wanna play it a bit too much and want more of a cut then the company is willing to hand over)
