  • Today I am going to talk about the re-recording of the album Schizophrenia by Cavalera Conspiracy, or is it just Cavalera, I am not sure but that is important. This is a different kind of review for me because it is both a classic album review and a new album review in one, but the purpose of this video is to ask the question: Was it worth re-recording this? Or should they have just left it alone.
    Background on the Original Album:
    - Released by Sepultura in 1987.
    - Second full-length album, following "Morbid Visions" (1985) and the EP "Bestial Devastation" (1985).
    - "Morbid Visions" had a raw black metal and early death metal sound.
    - "Schizophrenia" transitioned towards thrash metal with death metal elements.
    - Created by Max Cavalera (vocals/guitar) and Igor Cavalera (drums).
    - Andreas Kisser joined on lead guitar and bass for this album.
    - Raw production due to limited recording equipment at the time.
    - Signed to Brazilian record company Cogumelo Records and later Roadrunner.
    Re-recorded Album (2024):
    - 37 years later, the band re-recorded "Schizophrenia."
    - New lineup includes Max and Igor Cavalera, Igor Amadeus Cavalera (Max’s son, bass), and Travis Stone (guitar, from Pig Destroyer).
    - Contains 10 songs: 2 short instrumentals, 1 long thrash instrumental.
    - Original album had 9 songs; the 1990 reissue included "Troops of Doom."
    - New song "Nightmares of Delirium" added to the re-recorded album.
    Changes in the Re-recorded Album:
    - Lyrical Content: Shifted from darker occult themes to personal and human topics like war, death, mental illness, agony, and despair.
    - Vocals: Max's vocals have added effects, sounding cavernous with an echo, enhancing the instrumentals.
    - Instruments:
    - Guitars: Heavy and crunchy thrash metal style with death metal influences.
    - Bass: More prominent in the mix compared to the original, though lacking isolated parts.
    - Drums: Improved sound quality, with better-defined bass and snare drums.
    Track-by-Track Breakdown:
    1. Intro Track: Sounds like a horror movie; ends with "schizophrenia" spoken backwards.
    2. From the Past Comes the Storm: Heavy thrash metal with some death metal elements.
    3. To the Wall: Mix of thrash and death metal.
    4. Escape the Void: Favorite track; thrash and death metal sound with isolated guitar riffs.
    5. Inquisition Symphony: 7-minute instrumental; various styles, including clean guitars, heavy thrash, galloping riffs, haunting tones, Spanish guitar interlude.
    6. Screams Behind the Shadows: Heavy thrash with variety; slower rhythms, tremolo picking, thrashy chugging, galloping, neoclassical part.
    7. Septic Schizo: Aggressive thrash metal with palm muting and heavy thrash playing.
    8. The Abyss: Short acoustic and atmospheric instrumental.
    9. R.I.P. (Rest in Pain): Aggressive thrash and death metal elements, chugging, rhythm changes, weird waltz part.
    10. Nightmares of Delirium: New song; fits well with the album, thick bass sound, fast drumming.
    Conclusion:
    - Consistent quality with no weak songs.
    - Suggests Max and Igor might continue re-recording old Sepultura albums, though unsure about touching "Arise" and "Beneath the Remains."
    - Encourages viewers to check out a previous video on "Morbid Visions" and "Bestial Devastation," like, subscribe, and stay tuned for more rock and metal reviews.

It’s definitely worth the re-recording. I hope they write some original music with this sound and style. But who knows what these guys will do especially with Max in so many projects. Cheers JC

I turned it off after to the wall. Just felt like this album didn't need a remake. Liked beating and morbid remakes though

On October 25th, Portuguese black metal act Gaerea will be releasing their fourth studio album, entitled Coma. It will be their first album with guitarist [and now only original member] Guilherme Henriques taking over on vocals while still handling lead guitar as well as the first with female member Sonja Schringa on guitar.

Cool. I remember that they released an album not too long ago.

John! I don't like re-recordings or remasters. I prefer original sound. I'm glad I have all the original Megadeth recordings. The remasters are terrible. I don’t even know if you can find an original KIMB album. I'm happy mine is original. Rock on! 🤘🏼

Yeah I heard about the Megadeth remasters. I still have most of my original CDs

Great review John! I wanted to listen to it before watching your review, which I have now. I think the production is fantastic, much better than the original. The reissue I have the guitars are quite hard to interpret what they're playing, so it's great to hear what they're really playing. The vocals definitely sound different to the original, they went with the echo sound like on Morbid Visions. Inquisition symphony sounded incredible, never heard it sound so good! I cannot fault the guitar solos, they sound just like Andreas to my ears. The drumming is immense, and that new track is cool. I don't know if it's completely new or taken from old demos.
However, I feel like there are some differences I don't like. Firstly, I think the intro was slightly different, not sure weather that's down to copyright or not. Just sounded different to how I remembered. The outro of "To the Wall" was totally different, I didn't get why they changed it. And the instrumental "The Abyss" is a completely different song, sounds nothing like the original. I don't know if it has anything to do with Andreas composing the whole piece by himself, just found it very strange why it was so different.
Overall I thought it was really cool, I'm not sure if I'll pick it up. But I hope they don't do any more re-recordings because it'll just get ridiculous. It was fine re-recording the first 2 Sepultura releases because they needed it, this is far enough. Nice one 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Yes, that is what I think. No need to re-record Beneath the Remains or Arise. They are fine as is.

@@jcrockandmetalreviews Yeah, definitely! They should be left how they are, they don't need to be re-recorded. I think Max said he only wanted to do Bestial, Morbid and Schizophrenia because of the production. So he'll be going against his own word if he does the others

Hi John!!! I have mixed feelings about re-recordings.... sometimes they're well done and adds something new to the old stuff, but in some cases, it's just a cash grab. I have not heard this new one, but it think the main improvement has to be the production and new technology used in the recording.... They shouldn't do more, maybe live as "homages" but in the studio. cheers and be well

    • @jcrockandmetalreviews
      @jcrockandmetalreviews  หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah, I think it was becasue they wanted a better production value, but I don0t think they need to remake any of the others becasue Beneath the Remains and Arise are better left alone.

I LOVED the re-recordings of Bestial Devastation & Morbid Visions. they were so poorly recorded, the re-recordings brought them to life. I dont feel that way about "Schizophrenia". that was PERFECT the way it was. sure its a rough production, but it doesnt hinder the songs at all. it sounds great the way it was. plus Andreas' solo's were perfection. there was nothing to improve or gain by re-recording. I also feel that Igor has lost his edge with age and doesnt play the Schizophrenia songs as well. theyre not quite there tempo wise. the original will always be the best.

it is a downgrade from the 1987 album.
