Thanks for sharing the details. I was wondering about using as a ground clamp for welding and no way want to use those smaller point designs. Seems more surface area in contact to provide less resistance.
@@897473 I have a feeling I'm going to try to custom make one with parts around the shops since I have a few hard drive and other magnets. Still not sure about the design. Thought magnets in the center of a short block or thick wall tube, with a stud to bolt on the ground lead, attached at the end of a threaded rod on a fixed nut on the top of the tube with a handle. Not certain what I'd have that will be a thread with very few TPI to make a larger range of motion in a fraction of a turn however. Looking forward to you uses for inspiration in for other utility.
The thing with copper is not that it is too thick, it's that the copper specifically stops the magnet field, which turns into current induced in the copper material.
@@897473 How magnets work is somewhat of an enigma. I would be curious if you could put my statement to test by comparing the results with a sheet of steel of the same size. I would expect the magnet to have no issue in holding the steel in place.

@@897473 I found the parent site, and, from them, a supplier in the UK, and have asked for a price from them. Great video! Is it possible to pick up & drop a magnet of similar strength instead of metal? Also, can this switch mechanism be reversed to repel another magnet instead of attract? Thanks!
+ESCAGEDO WOODWORKING That's a broad question. Depends on what you want to do. Also, how much money you want to spend. If you are primarily welding steel to steel, then a Mig welder. If money is an issue, then you might consider a flux cored Mig welder. Some people really like these. Going up in price, you may want a Mig welder that uses shielding gas. I use argon 75. Another choice is Oxy/Ace: With OXy/Ace you can weld, braze, heat, bend and anneal copper. As you can see, there are several choices. Let me know what you want to do with welding and maybe we can narrow it down.
+ESCAGEDO WOODWORKING For the type of work that i do, if I only had one welding type in my shop, it would be oxygen acetylene. Final suggestion, watch a lot of videos and figure out what is going to work best for you.
I bought a couple from Amazon. Two small ones I bought from cyberweld.com, . Do a search for Magswitch. The handle is for off/on. When the handle is turned to off, the magnet disengages. For more information check with: magswitch.com.au/

I really don't know. I will say this, that the #400 magnet has a tremendous holding power over the #165. If cost isn't an issue I'd get the #600. Sorry I can't be more help. You might check with the company.
