Rio de Janeiro, Brazil | Inside the World’s Most Dangerous Cities (Documentary)

- Beyond the idyllic beaches of Copacabana, the energy of samba music, and the watchful eye of Christ the Redeemer, there is another side to the city of Rio de Janeiro. It’s a city in a state of perpetual war. Heavily-armed drug dealers control the favelas, while specially-trained police battle to take them down. Sometimes favelas become battlefields. That’s what happened in Jacarezinho in May 2021, when a police drugs bust turned into a bloodbath, and left 28 dead.
There is also inter-gang violence, where increasingly heavily-armed gangs fight for territory. The ordinary people who live in the favelas are trapped by gunfire which comes from all sides. They are surrounded by urban warfare, collateral damage of the drug trade. They aren’t even safe in their own homes, as bullets can go through walls. Three people a day are killed by stray bullets in Rio de Janeiro. The emergency rooms are full of people with bullet wounds. Every day, the doctors have to deal with wounds that you would expect to see on the battlefield.
We were given special access to the Rio Military Police Special Forces Battalion (BOPE), and were able to film them operating in high-risk situations. Their tactics follow the same pattern every time: they strike fast, and they strike hard. The strategy often puts lives at risk - both the lives of local people who live in the favelas, and the lives of the police themselves. The Brazilian police commit more police shootings than almost any other force in the world, but they also have the highest rate of deaths in the line of duty.
In the streets of Rio, crime is rife, but outside of the favelas it takes the form of bag snatching, armed robbery and kidnappings. The locals live in fear. They fortify their houses with razor wire, security gates and CCTV. More and more of them now buy guns for self-defence. President Jair Bolsonaro openly encourages this, as a vocal advocate for gun rights. Since his election, laws around gun ownership and carrying weapons have been relaxed, and the number of guns registered in Rio has doubled.
This film was first released in 2022.

Murders, robberies & theft all while wearing flip flops 😂😂😂
That's show that wearing fresh nike isn't helping at all... It's help only in the United States😂😂😂
I like how I'm not the only one who noticed this 🤣
How do you know he is not an innocent bystander?
My goodness that lawyer is CAKED up. Lawd jesus.
BBL for sure
Yeah bet they don't even pay in cash. Just the shlog
😂😂lawd
Lord, bless these brave men protecting the people. Brazil is the opposite of El Salvador with Najib Bukele who cleaned up and stopped gang violence, extortion, etc. He has zero tolerance for wickedness of murder, extortion, etc.
That lawyer's body is bangin...but that face would scare a Pitbull off a pork chop!
😄ikr
I mean there's ways around that whole face thing but for real ya'll acting like this woman looks like Big Foot or something 🤣
@@markanthony1004 Yup, paper bag, a towel, a mask, a pitch black room, plastic trash bag but you gotta be careful not to close it off with the drawstrings, lol...and there's other options. Just be creative and have fun!
Disgusting a lawyer with a diaper BBL what in the world. I don't get it it looks ridiculous
I like butter faces so it’s a win to me
Brazil should follow El Salvador because nothing will change in Brazil just getting worse! The war on drugs been going on for way too long! Plus crime is out of control too!
Have you seen the size of Brazil compared to El Salvador ?
The majorety of people watching this very good documentary abaut Violence in Rio de Janeiro ( And all Over Brazil), don't realize the Real Dimension of the Crime in Brazil.
Brazil is simple the most Violent Sociaty in the World.
In Brazil every year more people are killed than in a real War Zone.
I lived and worked in Rio de Janeiro for 18 long Scary months, and since my 1st day until the last one there wasnt a single day/ night without multiple shootings in my neighbourhood, and iam talking abaut Machine Gun shootings.
But the Worst part of this Absolute Insane Vicious Circle ,is the fact that the common citizens Lives in Constant Fear, but Specialy from the Authorities/Police that from the criminal gangs .They arel Terrified of being stopped by the Police while driving, specialy during the Weekends. They call it a Police Blitz.
I thing that by the name "you" can imagine what happens during those Police "routine" traffic stops.
My Grandmother used to say this abaut Brazil " God made Brazil a Paradise But the Devil put his people to live and Rule over that country ".
Bs, you know nothing of Brazil. This is Rio you're talking about. Brazil is about states, each is completely different than the other.
@@comanchedase Bro it ain't that deep. I think anybody can see they were implying Rio in particular, but used Brazil kind of off handedly
Based on what you said, I can guarantee you've never even met a Brazilian in your life
@@bluezy710 never Bet or Guarantee nothing abaut someone you don't have the slightest who he is or is Origin.
I don't Bet or Guarantee but iam pretty sure that you are Brazilian citizen.
What proves you wrong.
PS: And by the way, what knowing a Brazilian citizen has got to do abaut what i said in my comment...??!!! 🤔 Weird,to say the least.
.
Sorry, it just isn't. Haiti, south Sudan, Somalia, Honduras, Venezuela, Mexico, Iraq, Iran, and on and on are far more violent than Brazil. I have spent a long time all over Brazil (from north to south......It's perfectly fine. I think you need to explore the rest of the world to see reality.
Outstanding documentary!
Glad you enjoyed it!

I love ur documentaries ❤❤
You love misinformation
these slums are pretty scary
It is not as it is shown here. This is BS.
They're not as scary as they make them out to be in this documentary. It also depends on which favela you're in. I've been to Rocinha, the biggest favela in Rio, and honestly felt safer there than on the beaches.
I was in Rio from December to March. Stayed in São Christavao. I didnt notice much crime, except the wheel in the back of my car was stolen and a traveller I met got mugged at São Christavao train station by 8 guys, one carrying a machete. On New Years Eve I heard fireworks like you expect, then i heard them again every week. Until eventually the fireworks got a closer and didnt sound like fireworks, but gunshots. But Rio is pretty chill if you arent involved in this drug war. The only thing that reminds you of the danger is everyone's home has tall walls with barbed wire at the top. The walls and gates are so tall, you could be walking past a indoor football pitch or volleyball court and not even be aware. A lot of private property has to be closed and hidden from the public or it will attract attention from theives and criminals.
"Residents are trying to get to safety"
Locals milling around like nothing is happening. Do these "journalists" even watch their own footage?
@ 37:20: „She has practiced on this gun range for the last 6 months“ (weapon almost yeets out of hand) - it rather looks like it’s been 6 minutes. In an home invasion situation, the only thing she‘s prepared for are a few new cavities.
I’ve always wanted to go to Rio and from all the investigation I’ve done, I’m afraid that I will never go…….
I jutst got back from a solo trip to Rio and honeslty its not that bad. All the tourist areas are totally fine to walk around
It's sad to see how these countries are portrayed as being dangerous places to visit. They never show the true Brazil, which has middle-class family homes, beautiful cities and a growing economy.
Very scary I watched so many videos I can confirm is dangerous with those two people on motorcycle
@@barbarasara4033 The video only portrays the bad parts of Brazil... It's like if I went to the U.S and only filmed the "rednecks" and "hoods" of the country.
😂 I lived in Fortaleza for almost 4 years, one of the most dangerous places in LATAM. Shootings were a daily occurrence, the gangs particularly liked to put road blocks across certain roads at night and then rob the unfortunate drivers who happened upon the road blocks. At night it was common practice to never stop at traffic lights, only slow down and make sure you didn’t hit another car. Yeh real safe place!
@ Music - Videos that focus exclusively on the good side of Brazil are out there. Check them out.
Further, in the video, they did show a middle-class neighborhood. Unfortunately, the homes in those neighborhoods looked like fortresses because the residents there fear home invasions. Did you not hear the woman point out that one of her neighbor’s homes in the middle-class area was burglarized, and the family held hostage for four hours?
Pretending that Rio and other cities around the world don’t have serious issues with crime, deadly crime, does nothing to help address the issue.
Exactly, Rio is a relatively safe city for the average tourist. Even having some "problematic areas", Rio is among the safer cities in Brazil and statistically safer than at least 40 major US cities
Love it 💯🇩🇰
Is Brazil safe it sounds like paradise
They can borrow a leaf from El Salvador
Brazil population is huge
Way more people in rio
You should borrow a leaf
You mean Bukele?
That's the best comment I've read in years!
Spot on mate.
😎👌
Damn, guys are strapped up! It's crazy they have a .50 cal rifle too, and just chillin out in the street. (25:00)
That lawyer is a disgrace, defending these criminals and making it seem like the police is the villain. Disgusting!
OMG 😮 I couldn't believe this is brazil. Even on the beach 😢 Robbery is everywhere 😢
And I'm guessing the lawyer's fees are paid out of drug money too. If her client can not provide a legitimate source for the money he's paying the lawyer then that money should be confiscated. That's how you get them.
Always watching from Georgetown Guyana south America 🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾
Whats the difference between CHOQUE and BOPE?
Have never heard before about CHOQUE unit, only about BOPE.
Is far as i know, choque was founded especially and only for favela raids
I was there for 6 weeks in 1999 and I have been robbed in a bus by 5 young men with a gun!
The issue is that when there is a shootout between gangs and police innocent people die but people blame police and not the gangs , it might even be the stray bullet from the gangs that killed the innocent one but all blame must be put on the uniform people that is how it is all over the world. When crimes also becomes unbearable the blame also goes to the police.
that m4 with 100 round drum and sniper scope is something else
Scary stuff this is
Its a shame & embarrassing that Brazil is infested with high crime rate poverty & corruption in spite of being an oil producing country (Petrobras) & so rich in natural resources they say Philippines is a poor corrupt country but Manila's slums pale in comparison to Rio's immense favelas
Endemic corruption, the place is beyond fixing.
The Philippines is a much poorer country
In the sky!
In africa,we have the same problen in south africa, kenya and nigeria are also starting. Police corruption is the couse
Interesting Insightful Documentary,Brazil is on precipice, abyss and ruination.
Why people visit Rio amazes me..
Not all of Rio is like this smh.
I just got back from Rio and felt very safe. No trouble at all
this dog vs cat fights seems a little bit pointless.
That's what I'd want - a surgeon who doesn't even know how to wear a facemask.
Do Mardi Gras in New Orleans instead of Rio.
Dangerous, but with the risk.
THEY KILLED 29 PEOPLE
ONLY 3 WERE IN THE SUSPECTS LIST.
THATS HORRIBLE. 💔💔
Nope
can anyone tell me the beat at minute 22.22. it sounds fireeeeeeee
Brasil 😅 as it says on the flag "Order and Progress" ...
jeez that lawyer
Jesus please help these tortured souls to have. Peace, love, and prosperity 🙏❣️🙏❣️🙏❣️🙏❣️.
Control thru legalization n not repression💯
So why the commandos don't wear helmet going into battle?
Visibility, apparently.
Yeahh.. need tht lawyer's number or social medias. Research purposes.
fooooorrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal xD
Good documentary but does it mention the militia gangs made up of alot of former police and public servants? They were controlling about 40 % or so of Rio when Bolsonaro was in power but have lost some territory lately to rivals.
Also ADA is hardly controlling any favelas now after it's leadership was toppled or imprisoned and a large portion of them joining rival's such as CV.
Hats off to those brave Brazilian cops who risk their lives to deal with this. That said: what if the government would just make hard drugs (heroin, cocaine) available in clinics? I believe this is being done to good effect in Switzerland.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but these Brazilian gangs are not internationl drug cartels like the Mexican ones . The distribution is local, mainly in the favelas. It would be more humane, and certainly cheaper, to just distribute maintenance doses to the local addicts.
The fact that it's old doesn't mean it is not true
Everybody strapped.😂😂
That is so embarrassing marijuana should not be a drug the world countries
Oh no this place looks creepy
This is mad no law fear all the time what a life.
"The bullet stays in they only come out in movies" LMFAO and any non third world country
Brazil is fucked up 😢
How old is this? Its not the recent government.
Misinformation. Rio is far from being one of "the world's most dangerous cities". Rio is, in fact, among the safer cities in Brazil and statistically safer than at least 40 major US cities. It has some "problematic areas", as ever big city. For the average tourist, it's relatively safe, they won't have any contact with what's shown in this sensationalist video
There's an app called Fogo Cruzado that shows you all the gunshots or shootings in Rio. There's about 40 every week. If you're American that might not be unusual. But I've never heard a gunshot in my life where I'm from. Saw my fair share of crime in Rio.
@@jakel8627 Rio is also one of the biggest cities in the Americas, it's 50% bigger than NYC. There is crime in the city, especially in the outskirts, but a tourist won't hear any gunshots or see guns, except from police or if he ventures into favelas (with a guide)
It seems crazy yo
Me that policeman are not wearing any protective helmet
This is a war not officially 😮
Who fuels the violence?
The 10's of millions of consumers around the world.
How old is this? Its not the recent government. Ahh..2022
Not that bad the Olympics was just there
No gloves them police heavy sniffers
50000euros?? 160000 reais and man in jail for 25 years
They need these type of units in U.S. cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and New York.
so is USA
Let's not pretend like we dont know what's making the lawyer win alot of case in court😊
Putting in work while wearing chanclas 🩴 lol 😂
No Education No School Etc Etc and their Life is in Danger Day in Day Out. Terrible Life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ 22:00
The hospital shown in the video at first isn't even in the city of Rio de Janeiro. So much fake news
Also, these beach footages are at least 10 years old, I don't get why you need to spread that much misinformation about the city
Don't listen UN
I swear Brazilian Portuguese sounds similar to Russian and Ukrainian. The way some words are pronounced throws me off and I speak Spanish which of course is similar to a degree like some Italian words I can comprehend, but not Portuguese.
Bro.. Spanish sounded worst than Russian
I am Portuguese, and I can tell you Portuguese doesn't have anything to do with Russian and Ukrainian. I understand a little Russian.
@@dulcemoutinho5820he said sounds and it does indeed. Not of your point for sure.
On Google that often appears in the suggested (that Portuguese sounds like Russian). I don't really hear it myself. But a language expert will explain why you hear the similarity. They both make some sounds that are unique to the language. But that's it.
i thinks its more chinese
America will be like this soon because of our open borders and our government never holds these criminals in jail
Wonder if they have a democrat mayor?
you can see that lawyer a freak prob got some good kyat
This Is So Old !!!!!!!!!!!🙈🙉🙊
38:34 hope she will not be the one taking care of the aggressor who is holding me hostage
congratulations to drugs, on winning the war on drugs
There not traffickers there just kid’s selling drugs
Im indian the western media always shows bad things about us, but seeing all these gun battles we are lucky, India doesn't have any drugs or gun problems or organized crime
They need to legalize all drugs and this whole thing would be done overnight.
So in rio the camera man dies, also the lawyer got backk, she seems a toy of them😂
man you guys just keep posting the same videos over and over again off to the do not recommend pile
This is why God has decided to totally destroy this world.
I would carry fake jewlery, fake money, canceled debit cards and broken phone as a decoy. Fine..take my stuff. Then have my real things hidden under sole of my shoe or something Carry an ice pick TO THE softest part of body
When did this documentary released?
After I watching this I feel like I live in heaven. Can go anywhere anytime, even girls. Leave my phone or bag at table without any fear
Fight fire with fire
BBL DRIZZY
Why people don't want to go and do an honest job and work? Lazy people
What a ridiculous, misinforming video. Rio is one of America's biggest cities, it's 50% larger than NYC. There is a lot of poverty and inequality, which makes it have some "problematic" areas. Even so, it's actually among Brazil's safer cities, by homicide rates and other statistics and has lower homicide rates than at least 40 major US cities, including Washington D.C. For the average tourist, who doesn't venture into the cities outskirts looking for some youtube footage, it's a relatively safe city
Satan rules
Reality on the ground? It ain't nothin' like this sugar-coated crap. Rio's a damn fine lookin' city, any day of the year. All we got here's a few scumbag cops and some lousy TH-camr with nothin' better to do
Lula blame israel, but i can compare Gaza to favela
Their president isn't tough enough to make Rio safe from drug related crimes. He must learn from Bekele of El Salvador and Duterte of the Philippines.
Fifty thousand euros?! Wonder how the poor people are defended in the courtroom. Yet again only certain people get a good defence sadly.
They're not. Usually whomever pays the judge more wins the case.
That's mestup
HJb
Kind of seems like a waste of time.
Gawd damn 🥵🍑
