So, you think 'in Montana' properly identifies where you are cuz I don't think it does. MT is a BIG STATE. I've lived in NE MT in Valley and or Daniels county for 80 years and gardened there for at least half of them. My area is classified as weather/gardening zone 2. I was taught that going north and south the zones changed about every 60 miles. No doubt they were also influenced by altitude, e.g. the east and west sides of the Rockies. Please be more specific.
We are south central Montana zone 3/4. Straw bales have really worked like a charm for gardening in south-central Montana. However, I cover most plants early in the season with Walls of Water or Greenhouse Tubs. It's June and I still have Greenhouse Tubs on my cucumbers. You are much cooler than we are in NE Montana. Straw bales should still work for you. Let me know if you try them out. Hardest part for me was conditioning the bales.
