    About Second Wind
In the summer of 1982, two young friends with different musical backgrounds got together for a beer at Top of the Stretch, a new bar in Mineola, NY. After several of said beers, Dave Kenna (singer/guitarist of classic rock/jam cover group The Dega Band) and Mike Farley (singer/guitarist of metal bands Burning Ash, Venom, and Cyanide) started talking about collaborating on something different from the bands they were in-jamming on acoustic guitars. The bartender, Paul, was complaining about the musician that night, who was a “one man band” type that was too loud for the small bar. So, perhaps feeling emboldened by the beers, Dave blurted out that “Mike and I have an acoustic duo,” and with that, Second Wind was born.
Dave and Mike spent that entire summer playing gigs at Top of the Stretch. They covered songs by Simon & Garfunkel, The Moody Blues, Bread, America, The Beatles, Marshall Crenshaw, and Aztec Two Step-while writing their own material and working those songs into their set. They played every summer at the Stretch before moving on to wine & cheese bars. Second Wind eventually morphed into original pop/rock band The Stratomatics in the mid-late ‘80’s, beginning another new chapter in the history of the friends’ collaboration.
After Mike moved out of state, the two friends got together once a year for a weekend of concerts and/or sporting events. Then in 2012 when they planned to meet up for a football game in Kansas City, Dave suggested they book studio time and get together one more time to record some tunes. What they didn’t expect was that the four songs they recorded would become the first and so far only Second Wind recording, an EP called Eudora. The EP was named after the small town the studio was in-Eudora, Kansas.
Fast forward to 2024. With Dave having retired from his main gig as an attorney, and Mike planning to do so in a few years, Second Wind is making plans to play gigs and record again. But above anything, Second Wind is about two friends making music from friendship, and friendship through music.
