The worst ones I've felt with were those crappy foam inserts. They build up debris and algae and turn to straight mud in the gutters. Client flipped out when I showed him their condition. He spend a coue of hundred putting in the about 500 for me to pull them out 3 years later. Total freaking scam. And don't get me started with the gutters with a drip cap. Impossible to clean without bringing a power washer up to blast through a half in gap to get the soil accumulating in the gutters with no way to access. Absolute rip-off product.

I own a gutter company and this is not entirely true, it depends on which gutter guard you go with, if you go with Leaf Blaster Pro that one is installed at an angle meaning it keeps the same slope as the roof so it is a little more self-cleaning, then what I recommend my customers do when they get that card, is to get an attachment for your garden hose from Amazon which is essentially an extendable pole that has a nozzle at the top shooting water downwards on a blade pattern, the idea is that you walk around the gutters holding these pull up shoots water down onto the gutter guards cleaning them it takes literally 10 minutes

Depends on your house, and what's around it, too. If you have trees with limbs hanging over the house, it doesn't matter what you do, guard, no guard, your gutters are gonna be absolutely full of junk. But if there are no trees within 100ft of your house, then yeah, there's going to be almost nothing in those gutters except for a little algae or moss.

Ive said it before, the problem isnt the idea of gutter guards, its the crappy people behind it. If youre gunna install something like that it has to be entirely lined up perfectly with the roof, meaning they have to be custom made to form fit to your gutters, and not leave even a millimeter of gap, and they also would have to match the angle of your roof so its completely seamless. And also the holes would definitely need to be smaller and perfectly flattened, so as to not let much, if any at all, catch. With all of these things perfectly made and in place, it would almost certainly ever have any sort of issues, if at all. Everything would flow over them and go over the edge. But obviously, as you can probably guess, these would be insanely expensive and very few people would buy them, and so these companies make a really shitty version that simply cannot work as intended, because they dont put a singular ounce of care i to their construction.

I've done all kinds over the last two years and the other guy is right. High quality or dont bother.
They only work if you get the high quality ones with mesh on top of grids with an overflow lip and a wingbak. Stops both sides from getting debris and the rest of debris resting on top you just wait a couple summers and pay the small fee to blow it off the roof (or do it yourself), rake it up to your lawn and mow over it. Easy peasy
    Edit
Also forgot to mention ALL the high quality ones come with a transferable lifetime service and warranty. So a fee wouldn't be added in most cases if you wanted it blown off or cleaned.

It happens because if not regularly maintained either the guards can build up larger debris on top of them or the gutter completely fills up with smaller debris. Depending on the build up pattern rain water can then become redirected to flow over the inside edge of the gutter & against the side of the house. This happens for years upon years, usually to the elderly who don't notice, & can end up developing into structural water damage.

Do not get the chicken wire guards, do not get the plastic wire guards, and definitely do not get the spongy plastic guards (by far the worst). Get the rollover guards, aluminum guards, or steel mesh guards. They will still need to be cleaned from time to time, but if installed correctly, they will not need to be removed to clean them. If you're having to remove them to clean them, then you or your company did not install them correctly. Most of the cleanings I do, I simply use a leaf blower to clean off the guards, but if the blower isn't handy, I can just sweep them off.

Some products are terrible, but some are really good, so do your research.
I will say they work well. You have to have them sloped enough so they don't clog. If you don't, you'll be worse off. I've had them for 3 years, and my gutters are totally clear still.

Get stainless micromesh gutter guards and install them securely, properly, and in line with the roof pitch, so that they are an extension of the profile of the roof, not parallel to the ground. Anything that can slide or roll off of your roof pitch will then also slide or roll off of the guards. Mine work perfectly. And no, water does not also roll off the guards, even in a heavy downpour.

Anyone who says always and never all the time probably hasn't been around much. Gutter guards work great in some conditions and fail utterly in others. It depends on many factors like the kinds of trees (and the leaves or needles they produce) and how much they overhang, the steepness of the roof and the style of guard you get. Some do better with large leaves, small leaves or needles.
One thing that is true is that when these guards get so overwhelmed with crap that a homeowner calls someone, they are a major pain to clean - much harder than scooping it out of the open style. So charging more probably makes sense in most cases

She then freaked out saying that she wanted me to remove the gutter guards only to clean the gutters and then put them back on. Some of those guards don’t like being removed and they end getting trashed by trying to remove them.
Her husband then chewed her out about how she needs to stop trying to micromanage on how a job is performed and stopping telling contractors how to do their job.

Like anything, you get what you pay for. If you spend more money and get the ones that slightly match the angle of the roof and have a little lip the rolls over the gutter, I've never really seen those clog because the rain water landing on the guard helps slide then off. Those guards shown are just bad gutter guards. Sure even with guards on, debris will set on top, however it keeps your underground drains and downspouts clear as well as letting the gutter drain out. All it takes is a few debris to clog one hole and then the entire gutter wont drain. With a too of the line guard, debris could sit on top of the area where the hole is while the rest of the gutter drains.

We have gutters on the house that never get leaves and twigs in them. We also don't have any tall trees within 500ft of the house.

I agree that the leaffilter type mesh screens could end up collecting gunk over time and become clogged themselves. But doesn’t his video contradict his message? All those pine needles would not get into the pipes if there were gutter guards of any kind, and those seem like a pain to clean out, especially if you have long pipes.

Nope. Depends on where you live and the trees in your and your neighbors' yards. Sure, you'll still have to clean. But in the right conditions, you can do that with a lawn blower from the ground. And even when it rains REALLY hard, your gutters don't overflow and cause water damage.

We got gutter guards last year and then have been amazing. My husband use to be outside in the ladder in his rain jacket during almost every storm cleaning the cloggs out. Now the water just flows. I can see a good amount of the guards from different windows and they have stayed pretty darn clean even with trees right above them.

I bought a battery powered leaf blower. Takes me 10 min every 2 weeks and my gutters are clean as a whistle baby

Gutter guards do infact work, You have to do your part as the homeowner to keep up the maintenance, whether you do it or pay someone to do it. Gutter guards are not meant to eliminate the task of cleaning gutters, They're meant to help make them easier to clean/maintain...

I tried gutter guards for a couple years and ended up taking them off. I live in the forest with huge pine trees all around my house. The pine needles would poke into the fine mesh and build up really quickly. It was a pain to clean them out and when I removed the gutter guards there was a ton of fine debris in the gutter. Now I just clean the gutters out a couple times during the fall with a leaf blower. If I time it right when the gutters are dry it takes about 10 minutes to clean them out.

In colorado, we had a type of gutter guard that only allowed water drops in, nothing ever sat on top of them it just slid off. Never got clogged in over five years.
(We lived in a dense pine forest 😉)

This makes sense. I worked for like eight months as a gutter guard assembler and people buy TONS

A solution is for 1 to stop living.

I brought cheap steel mesh gutters from Lowe's and they work fine. You just have to remove a 3-foot section and flush it out every couple of years. But he does have a point depending on the type you get a lot of debris just sits on the top keeping them from functioning properly turning your house into a waterfall.
