  • I know title kind of sucks, but my wrenches turned out great, a little vinegar, water & baking soda, a little buffing, cleaning, & polishing and they turned out great. Next year I will work on making this full sets.

    I just started watching your channel, subscribed and thumbs up. I just bought a VV series set of Craftsman double box end wrenches via Craig's list, have been collecting and cleaning and servicing old tools for some time! Thanks for the great videos!

      Thanks, I look for all old tools and clean them up, some of my videos are long but I try to show all that I do!

    I love all old tools, Craftsman will always be special to me. My first tool set my father bought for me was Craftsman and so was my fathers. I remember like it was yesterday going to Sears to buy them. I always pick them up when I can get them reasonable. Nice job, I need to get around to cleaning up a bunch of SK and Williams wrenches I bought a couple years ago for cheap.

    Great work! FYI, the one that's made in Japan is not a Craftsman tool. You'll notice that it's labeled as "Sears" not "Craftsman". While Sears did own Craftsman, they were not the only tools they sold. Sears also sold lower priced tools made by another manufacture under the Sears name.

    So I'm sure you probably got this comment already plenty of times but a much safer and just as if not more effective alternative to vinegar is called evapo-rust and it's extremely inexpensive and it's safe on practically everything except for rust and at first it might seem like a miracle solution and that it won't actually do anything but as somebody who doesn't have the time nor funds nor space for all those different fancy chemicals and whatnot for rust removal this stuff really does work you let it sit 24 hours overnight check it in the morning phenomenal almost everything gone highly recommend it

    • @djstoolrestorations
      @djstoolrestorations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have used it and I find that it did not last that long, I have used Rusto-leum rust dissolver and have found I like it better, it last longer, works quicker, I do believe it is a little more caustic, but I am willing to use it, if I pay attention to what I am doing, thanks for the comment, and for the view, I hope you found my video informative or at least entertaining from a red neck like me!!!!!

    Nice work and great deals you got! I happened upon a set of set of vintage Craftsman metric wrenches for $20 and now have them between 6mm - 19mm, though I’m missing a 15mm. All are forged in the USA manufacture by various manufacturing codes - v, vv, va etc. I’m on the hunt for a 15mm to complete what I have so far. If I find a great deal on others.. I’ll probably pick them up too.

      Does not hurt to have extras,! I will plan all the tools I need for a job and always have extras just in case I need a backup or drop one where I cannot reach, and then go back later to retrieve it.

    Hey DJ. Your 15 mm six point is a “Craftsman Industrial” branded wrench. I have a six point 3/4”combination wrench. On mine the front is stamped “Craftsman Industrial”, the back is stamped “U.S.A.”. The number is 23490. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing your work/hobby. kp

    -V- is 1950s
    =V= is 1960s

    =VA= is 1980s
    The one without the mark is before 1950. This is to the best of my knowledge.

    I cleaned alot of my wrences in the kitchen sink with Bar Keepers Friend. It made them look almost brand new. The chrome really shines after using BKF.

    I left a wrench in vinegar for 2 days and it took the plating right off. Wrench was already shot due to the rust so we'll do the baked oil trick and it'll be the black sheep of the collection lol

    Love your video I myself am a craftsman collector and have every full set since they were ever made from the chrome vanadium to vanadium steel and c1 all pre ww2 its taken me time and money to find them but they just don't make them like they use too even have a name and date edged in one wrench date 1930 craftsman the way to go American trusted !!!!

    • @djstoolrestorations

      I still have people say that Craftsman was junk and call them crapsman, but people do not understand that they never made their own tools and that everyone form Snap-on to Moore manufacturing made them to a specific speciation that Sears wanted.

      I agree see I feel and know first hand that our country was founded on craftsman and early century our grandfather's in fathers have used them its what made America from automotive mechanics industry to heavy industrial maintenance to commercial and residential use but there's just something about the older tools that just fascinate me and that is the history and quality of the forged and billiet I have many of tools I'm my collection from snap-on to harley davidson branded tools and channellock collection and kline collection I have put together what I think is an amazing collection and add to it every chance I can but out of all of my tools something inside of me pulls me to my antique craftsman wrenches and for almost pushing 100 years old there still usable and in great shape

    Hi. What did the vinegar do to the wrenches that was not originally there? Thanks.

    • @djstoolrestorations
      @djstoolrestorations  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It ate a lot of plating off of the wrenches! do not leave any tools in vinegar longer than 8 hours, after that you need to check them more often, 6% vinegar is stronger than you think, I know because I have damaged some tools by leaving it in too long! hope I explained this well!

    Cratsmen tools are junk. Hence why i never buy them ever. Tekton tools are my go to for long term reliability and a better investment on top quality.

    • @djstoolrestorations
      @djstoolrestorations  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      In the last 5 years I would agree, but tools for Sears where made by JH Williams, Snap-On, Proto, Billings, Wilde tools, so you see you are buying quality, Sears NEVER made tools they where all contracted out, if you want to read a little history you can go to Alloy Artifacts web site and read, this web site has no ads and has history of 96 percent of all tool manufactures!

      That's your opinion... I made my living as a mechanic for many years. My tools were primarily Craftsman, with SK, Snap-on, Mack, Proto, and Matco mixed in.
      In 25 years I broke sockets, ratchets, breaker bars, combo wrenchs, etc... but I never broke a Craftsman tool, not one. I did wear out the internals in a ratchet, Craftsman simply replaced it as they didn't have the rebuild kit in stock. If they were still the 'old' tools, I'd still buy them. Kobalt from Lowes has been my 'non-professional' replacement.
