Catastrophic flooding across western Europe as politicians blame climate change - BBC News

- More than 120 people have died and hundreds are still missing after record rainfall caused the worst flooding in parts of Western Europe for many decades.
In Germany dozens of people were unaccounted for, with the Chancellor Angela Merkel describing the floods as a catastrophe.
Torrential rain has also devastated parts of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
Survivors have described the terrifying speed at which water levels rose.
Some politicians in Germany say the extreme weather is the result of global warming and they're calling for more urgent action to counter climate change.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting - from Jenny Hill in Erftstadt, Germany - Anna Holligan in the Dutch town of Valkenberg - and chief environment correspondent Justin Rowlatt on the threat posed by climate change.

Politicians have the audacity to blame climate change when they don’t do anything about it anyway.
To be fair, the ones who acknowledge it's climate change ...are constantly blocked by the ones who assert that it isn't. And the big companies/conglomerates who'd have to pump money into "going green" have suspicious relationships with the very ones blocking the progress. So, once again, it's about money. The only hope, is that the damage that's occurring as a result of all this ...is also costing money. And, since that's the language these people speak, maybe it'll prompts some changes.
All Me : Bold of you to assume the politicians using climate change as a scapegoat to make progress are actually trying to do something about it.

Time to offer up a prayer ....
are we that weak????
“The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints, and those who fear Your name, small and great, and should destroy those who destroy the earth.” (Revelation 11: 18 - NKJV)
In the coming days, sooner than we might even think, God’s wrath will come. “The nations” will face the “wrath” of God, “the dead,” those separated from Christ, will experience a time of God’s judgment. There will be “reward” for His “servants the prophets and the saints, and those who fear (His) name” but for many others there will be a terrible time of dread. One group that is singled out in our text for judgment is “those who destroy the earth.” It is said that God will “destroy” them.
It is clear from our passage that there are those who do not take care of God’s creation. Even though a curse is upon the earth due to man’s sin (Genesis 3: 17), it does not mean that we are given license to “destroy” that which God has created. And in these days in which you and I live man is in the process of doing just that; destroying the earth and its inhabitants. One writer has noted several ways in which man is carrying this out:
Global water pollution
Global air pollution
Global spread of nuclear and chemical and other sophisticated weapons of mass slaughter
Global erosion of essential layers of topsoil
Chemical pollution of lands and food chains with toxic wastes, nuclear wastes, insecticides, and other substances
Animal and plant extinctions
Destruction of vital rain forests and other important ecological communities
And of course . . . through the practice of sin man pollutes the earth, upsets the balance God intended, shows little regard for that which God has given him.
As I move about it is not uncommon to see men and women toss a gum wrapper, or a cigarette butt, or a plastic bottle carelessly out the window of a car, or do so as they walk along the street. Small acts it may seem, but nevertheless, when multiplied by a growing populace, they are acts that have their destructive effect, and that show a disregard for “the earth,” for that which God has created and given to man to care for.
I know that “the whole creation groans” (Romans 8: 22), and that it longs for the release from the curse brought about by sin, but that does not mean that while we are here on this earth we are not to take care of it to the best of our ability. Even though “citizens of heaven” (Philippians 3: 20), we are called to be responsible occupants of wherever we may currently be. We are to do what we can to take care of what God has given us, not “destroy” it.

Certainly, we have a few wind turbines and solar panels scattered around the world, and certainly some appliances are that bit more energy efficient, the better off now driving about in electric vehicles.
However, our global population is growing so very fast and we've now evolved such a dependency on so many more electrical gadgets than when I was a child, all soaking up that much more electricity.
I bet we've made no actual progress in real terms - otherwise, why would certain countries be building exponentially more coal/gas powered stations and oil companies sinking more wells?
Well, they have to - in order to meet with demand for the huge increase in home/ personal gadgetry, the consumerist lifestyle, and the vastly increasing number of people that want for cars, devices and overseas holidays.
Third world countries need a great deal of financial help to embrace cleaner energy production and provide efficient new equipment, rather than us casually sitting back and letting them fall into the same trap we did in the West, becoming more dependent on fossil fuels and with some still using the aged, energy-inefficient machines our dead manufacturing industries cast off decades ago.
I heard an awful figure the other day. That the elite 1% consume as much energy as the poorest 50% on the planet.
These same people sprinkle the tiniest financial tokens on prizes and incentives for eco-inventions (such as carbon capture devices) - but waste 10-100 times that amount on frivolities like Bitcoin investment and joyrides into space.
These people 'must' be taxed properly to finance the environmental changes necessary. Instead of which, that useless environment summit came up with imposing a 15% tax on them in '2 years time.'
2 years?
Anyone... when have your governments deferred an income tax increase for the ordinary working person until 2 years time? We always get them the very next April here in Britain. Not in 2 years time.
Just think what 15% corporation tax on Amazon would do for - the Amazon, for instance.
Just think what 15% of Tesla would do for ocean cleaning.
Other environmental matters raised at this summit have target dates set for 2030, 2040, and 2050.
What possible good is a target set for 2050?
That's 29 years time.
Just go back in your mind 29 years - and remember good old 1992 for a few moments. Remember what it was like, what the planet was like...
Now, do you really think we have 29 years left to dither about getting industries to fall into line? Not that they will. The next summit meeting will no doubt push back most of those targets another 10-20-30 years and re-label the rest, like they do at every summit meeting.
Right now, a not insignificant number of us won't have even 9 years to wait for the first of these goals to be met. Among us right now are future victims of climate change - whether it be from flood, wildfire, drought, extreme heat or the civil unrest all these factors will raise.
The summit targets should be cast aside. The future is not the time to get things done. It's now.

What a time to live in... It seems like we can't get a break on this planet these days. Sending positive vibrations throughout.
Dear C Vader: What's even a bigger disaster is how the mass media is telling us that this Climate Change is 100% man made. I've researched this Climate Change thing enough to know that Climate Change would be happening now even if humans had never appeared on Earth. Although it is true that SOME of this Climate Change is due to burning fossil fuels, it's really impossible to tell how much. It seems that mass media worldwide is spreading this BS about "man made Climate Change" because the Establishment doesn't want the public to realize how weak and puny all our science and technology really is against the simple, but brutal Forces of Nature. Check out Climategate (2013) and follow the links and the leads from there if you want to know the unvarnished truth about Climate Change. ... jkulik919@gmail.com
It seems evolution has figured out what's ailing the planet, how many species of animals have become extinct, and other forms of life due to the capitalistic minded powers that be? You say we can't get a break? I say we have had plenty of breaks and squandered them, over and over again. Greed and selfishness should be the straw that breaks humanities back from an evolutionary point of view. Millions of people dying from hunger ( and I'm not even thinking about the continent of Africa) the u.s. has plenty of poor, so does russian and ( well just pick any continent other than Africa). Yet you have people spending billions to fly in space. Honestly I'm rooting for the planet to eradicate us humans because we are a strain on all forms of life. Personally I'm a very happy person and have never had depression, I guess I'm lucky considering the world we live in. I choose to not be selfish in my thinking though and the logical solution is humanity has to go. Humanity is the problem and humanity isn't interested in a solution, unless that solution is Doubling down in capitalism and greed.
Like a lightning strike to the face. All brick foundations will fail when GOD speaks. Could it be GOD or just another day in the life of men who somehow wish for the best and pray less.

40 years ago I have read books written by scientists on the subject of global warming that described what is happening today.
also in Agenda21/30
2000 years ago the apostle John in Revelation 11:18 foretold mankind would be "ruining the earth". Good news is that soon Jehovah God will remove the wicked from the earth and save the planet. Psalm 37:29 - "The righteous themselves will possess the earth and reside forever upon it". 😊😊
Climate was NEVER static. What ended the Ice Ages? Even Noah was flooded. It has always happened. Always will. And if you actually believe in man-made global warming (I am sceptical), our efforts planning for it are wasteful and need re-directing as suggested by Lars Larson and many eminent others.
@@hittitecharioteer Those changes happened over thousands of years, not hundreds like it is now. The environment, including plants and animals, had time to adapt: to relocate to warmer/colder parts of the earth or to evolve to tolerate a changing climate. Now, the change is so fast that nature can't keep up. Hence the mass extinction.
Also, just because it happened before doesn't mean it's not undesirable. Sure the earth's been warmer before. But that doesn't change the fact that the warming will cause trillions in economic damage and cause mass migrations of people fleeing increasingly frequent natural disasters, famine and water wars as desertification ruins people's land. It's more cost and human-life effective to prevent as much warming as possible. Sustainable technologies are better for business anyway. Who wants to have to dig up copper from halfway across the planet, deal with shipping regulations etc when they can just recycle it at home. Same with renewable energy. It's already much cheaper than fossil fuels, the only problem is stability. You can't predict when the sun will be out or when the wind will be blowing. The only thing holding renewables back is a lack of investment in energy storage tech.

@@rolloloftbrook9558 Pollution in Asia is recent from booming economic development. The West has been putting carbon into the atmosphere for the past 200 years. The huge amount of carbon released during the industrial revolution is still increasing temperature today and caused many other environmental issues. And let's not forget globalization, capitalization, and colonialism. The reason Asia is most polluting today is because the biggest polluting companies of the West need cheap labor and exploitation of resources which they are able to do through years of colonial and post-colonial rule in Asia. Not saying Asia isn't doing its own polluting, it is. However, understand the difference in socio-economic conditions of and power held by countries that post-industrialization, can now afford to make huge climate commitments to recover from their carbon emissions vs countries that are just trying to meet basic developmental markers and adapt to haphazard changes imposed upon them through colonial globalization. Some countries in Asia and Africa contribute 0.02% of global emissions but are among the top 10 most vulnerable due to the effects of emissions created by industrialized, developed countries. We need action from everywhere in the world to deal with climate change but what we expect from them should be proportionate to their contribution to emissions(both current and past) and their level of political/economic power.
