I don't know, it made it more realistic. She seemed like a really secluded girl, and in addition to that, I doubt she wanted to talk about the pain in her life, and I'm sure Leonard told her not to say anything, and if she really was mentally handicapped, and didn't have an easy time speaking, that would all culminate into a situation where she wouldn't have said anything to anyone. Of course her brother could only speak on his own behalf. He made it clear that even in death, she kept things from him (didn't reveal the truth to him directly, he had to find out through Nicole). That is realistic. Especially since all parties were so young when it all happened. I do agree the twist was a cliché (I said to myself that he was probably Rachel's brother maybe halfway into the video). But I did like it anyways.
Exactly. My biggest problem with this game is the fact the developers (and people playing/watching this game even) seem to completely gloss over the fact that at the core of this story is a fucking pedophile. Why are they portraying Leonard like he was some kindly old mentor "helping" Rachel when he was actually sexually grooming a child as a predator? Are we supposed to feel sorry for him or something? Like some of the things said in the game are downright disturbing in the way they make excuses for him, like saying "it was just love" or whatever, and framing the whole thing like the mom was the most terrible one out of them all while simultaneously "forgiving" the dad. How did Nicole not react at all to her own father being a sick pervert who drew nude pictures of a child and impregnated her, but broke down in tears over finding out her mom is a murderer? BOTH her parents were fucked up, but as it stands, the game seems to favour and paint the father in a much better light for some odd reason (probably to get the predictable twist ending) even though he is just as disgusting as the mother. He was a pedophile, plain and simple and, as you said, it was Rachel who bore the brunt of everyone's actions but we never get to hear from her in any way, shape or form.
@@elpresadorjr.6620 Technically, you're right. 16 is the legal age of consent in Montana. This technically isn't rape. But he was her mentor. She was at a distinct disadvantage: bullied, depressed, and suffering from a learning disability. Deliberate or inadvertent, he took advantage of that. Yet, he's made out to be some kind of innocent -- his culpability extending only as far as being a philanderer. That's irresponsible story telling and probably not what the writers for this game wanted. Then again, maybe they think this is OK. Who knows.
Tbh, the lack of information (or lack of Rachel's perspective) is what made it 100x more realistic to me. After someone dies, it's more common to spend an eternity wanting answers to endless questions, rather than it is stumbling across the answers to those questions from secondhand accounts or from writings. If they were attempting to capture realistic feelings after the loss of someone's life, especially with such a complex story like Rachel's, they definitely nailed it imo. My dad was killed 2 decades ago and I still have more questions than I ever will answers-- maybe that's where my feelings about this are coming from. I can't say for sure. Just offering another opinion.
This story has really got me on the fence and I find myself sympathising with the mother. Imagine the person you choose to spend the rest of your life with betraying that trust by having an affair. Is it justified for her to commit murder? Of course not! I also find it very annoying that the game paints Leonard as this sweet and nerdy innocent father figure when he took advantage of a 16 year old all because of "love". Let's just call a spade, a spade. He was a coward and did not have the decency to devorce his wife and got a teenager pregnant. If Claire was made to be the villain, then so should Leonard.
I think Nicole saw Leonard with rose colored glasses. She kind of doted on him, about how smart and kind he was. I think she was the same age as Rachel and was was jealous the attention she was getting.
I destest this comment. How do you manage to call relationship between that father and Rachel "affair"? It's literally grooming, CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE. "Decency to divorce his wife", you mean DECENCY TO GROOM AND SEXUALLY ABUSE A FRICKING CHILD FOR AN YEAR? Nicole should have killed the father and not the victim. That's like your husband is shooting someone and you kill that person because apparently, here victim is at fault, not the husband.
Yea, but it was told through the POV of Nicole, who was young and blind to all of this. She doesn’t know until the end, so we’re learning it through her eyes. It’s about perspective. The other characters are blinded by their own flaws. The mother was capable of murdering, and Irving has trauma from lack of attention and feeling invisible, and other deep-rooted psychological issues. So it’s not tone-deaf exactly. They didn’t really paint him as a villain as much as they should have, of course. Obviously the whole situation is VERY wrong. But they all ended up really screwed up in their own ways. They were all kind of their own villains and villains to each other. It’s a whole complicated mess. But again, this is also just MY perspective. So maybe I’m going to paint myself as the villain in this thread for interpreting and feeling this way about the plot.
Nice game video. Despite looking good, the story annoyed me. How did the protagonist end up being the bad guy? She had nothing to do with her 40 something father taking advantage of a mentally disabled teenager Nor was she responsible for the mother. Yet somehow, in this twisted story, she had to pay. Yuck.
well, she was friends with Rachel and felt that her father preferred her friend than her. also, she did not know that her mother killed the girl and after her game there was a body right next to her. this game is about trauma and how life can be fucked up to everybody that survives shit like this
@@j3bueno Rachel was mentally impaired if I remember the game. Its been 3/4 years. And the protagonist was just friendly to be nice. But she has nothing to do with the father being a perverted rapist who took advantage of an underage child. Nor was she responsible for the mother's insanity. This game still has messed up and wrong morality.
@@kerrytakashi12ngl nicole wasnt really a pleasant character herself based on her attitude very cynical and kept on praising her dad despite what he did being a predator and impregnating a disabled teenager. I hate how the game acts like this is a love story gone sad when its not. Shame on the person who created/directed this (thats daniele azara btw)
@@dl3209 The game makes suggestions that Nicole was abused by her father. In the beginning, she mentions that her father made her remember puzzles so she wouldn't get lost in the hotel. Why would she be wandering around at such a young age? Then we are shown that dungeon room set up for a far younger child than for a teenage girl. Was that Nicole's room before the father associated it with Rachel? Also in that dream, the father calls Nicole by Rachel's name. I think the Mother realized some things, she had a psychotic break and that is what led her to attack Rachel and run away with Nicole. But that is never addressed and the Father is still celebrated as a hero.
Honestly I thought it was going for Nicole actually being Rachel and she was kept in that room by her father and repressed all the memories of it, why part of her knew the song and the riddle because it was near the entrance. I thought the paranormal shit was just in her head and she was once kind of special which the books on speech therapy helped her eventually become smarter then move on in life and take the name Nicole to further suppress her past. The day Rachel committed suicide supposedly was what I thought the day she choose to kill that part of herself and Nicole was born. I thought Irving would have been someone from her past that admired her and maybe fed her those books to learn behind her father's back and wanted her to slowly realize her horrible past piece by piece. Never expected what actually happened.
I was thinking that Rachel didn't actually die but it was set up by Leonard so that he could keep her in the hotel forever. And that the fake child bedroom was actually the bedroom from the child that she would've given birth to in the hotel (as it would be 10 years later) and that the child and Rachel would show up somewhere in the hotel lol
This one's a really good game. I just wish there was an ending where Nicole ran after Irving and stopped him from sucide. An ending on a brighter note I guess. Though the one that I just didn't really like is the idea of this old man and pregnant 16 yrs old Rachel being a "pure/true love". Idk. Also, if Irving was in that room the whole time then who was the older lady he was saying goodbye to in the middle of the call earlier in the game?
Yours is the only comment I've seen that isn't convinced of Rachel and Leonard's "simple love". She was 16. He was middle-aged. He was her tutor, helping her through her dyslexia. It's technically not statutory rape (16 is the age of consent in Montana), but it seems like he's grooming her. Idk. The ambience and aesthetic of the game are great. The story and the themes could have been handled better. He made up a voice. There was no old lady. He was just pretending.
This was the most interesting and addictive story i've witnessed in a loong time, the twist was amazing tbh. Watched the whole damn thing in one go. All 2 and a half hours of it and loved every bit. Man!!!! I don’t think I can play this game myself! This is amazingly creepy. The set up and progressions makes it even creepier! More like this please Hollow!!!❤️
Haven't finished watching it yet but I think the guy who is "helping" her is the one behind it all. I mean look how he gets all "comfortable" with her and called her Nicky. Then starts getting paranoid later. Telling her not to do this or that.
I watched this from start to finish and was glued to it! The visuals, the suspense, the times I braced for a him scare that never happened, expectations aways just out of reach and the inevitable twist at the end....utter genius! Thank you so much for laying this one out there.
I want to point thing only. Remember the room full of mannequins? Claire was holding a stick over Rachel and her baby while everyone else was looking AWAY from the scene. It perfectly depicted the fact that EVERYONE in the town was more or less KNOWING something about the truth. And yet, they all chose to be silent, even the sheriff and stuff. That’s the part that truly bothers me. Poor Rachel. May she rest in peace.

I knew something was wrong when Irving said;” look at the red cables on the ceiling and follow them out.” How did he know so much about these locations. How did he know exactly where Nicole was standing. (Ex. We told him we went in, but when the power went out we could’ve left without him knowing.) how does he know things were in the same condition as when he had seen them? (He had previously mentioned needing to go there in the past, but things could’ve changed since he last made a trip.) That tipped me off and made me wonder if he was really watching everything.
This story made me so angry!! A grown-ass man fell in "love" with a 16-year-old and it was okay???? And then they dragged Nicole into finding the truth? It was so damn ridiculous!!
Damn...That was beautiful. I hope you can find more like like this one. This was one of the most enjoyable games to watch you play. Thank you and never change Hollow.
I feel like Rachel’s ghost was there, it wasn’t just (spoilers) her brother messing with Nicole or Nicole losing her mind slowly, but surely. The red butterfly was the symbolism for me. And as a survivor of the horrible stuff that Rachel went through myself, I can see why the daughter would be in denial that her father, somebody she idolized and loved, was a monster who destroyed two family’s lives. I felt bad for her, for Rachel and for Irving. I wish there was a way to save them both. ....Alas, that is what fanfiction is for.

@@cinderhellax thank you
This story has really got me on the fence and I find myself sympathising with the mother.
So maybe I’m going to paint myself as the villain in this thread for interpreting and feeling this way about the plot.
it wasn't love, at all
@@kau0303Agreed. People who think Rachel and the father were in a relationship are the same people who think Herbert from Lolita was the victim.
I was thinking along the same lines as you were. Also seems like a better story than what actually played out.
I honestly would've liked that ending better. Like, by a lot.
This couldnt even be a possibility 30 seconds into the game. Your mom's letter says to give money to rachel's family.
I expected the plot twist @ 2:09:00
I was thinking that Rachel didn't actually die but it was set up by Leonard so that he could keep her in the hotel forever. And that the fake child bedroom was actually the bedroom from the child that she would've given birth to in the hotel (as it would be 10 years later) and that the child and Rachel would show up somewhere in the hotel lol
had no one else noticed how everytime he would get further in the story, that wolf pic would get more aggressive looking?? my OCD is real....
i noticed it too 😰
Just went back and looked, very cool. Love little tidbits like that.

I'm with you my OCD is ruining me though
@@CountryBuff08 is there a timestamp available ? im not seeing a wolf.
“Don’t sell the hotel, Rachel is there”. And Hollow was like “😱 oh hell no” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This one's a really good game.
He was just pretending.
the game did not say that. Irving says, and he is also a fucked up person.
The way he pretends to do a womans voice saying "goodnight hun" was so freaky
This was the most interesting and addictive story i've witnessed in a loong time, the twist was amazing tbh. Watched the whole damn thing in one go. All 2 and a half hours of it and loved every bit. Thank you Hollow for playing this game and letting us experience it with you. Keep bringing games like this to us. We really enjoy it. 😊😊
omg, hollow almost cried by the intro letter from 05:51 and to 06:21
aww :(
The twist was predictable but still fun. Just wished for a more 'haunted house' approach instead of Irving composing all the sets.
It was a disgusting game that glorified p*dophiles and trashed the victims. How was this good? Art is subjective, but depicting a p*do as a good guy is shitty
Homie you yelled out “hello” when you heard noise. That’s how people die!! Come on man 😂😂
Haha yeah hello who's there

This is a much better game than the other horror games that just cast you into a storyless insane asylum. This is a slow burn psychological thing, I really enjoy that.
Exactly, I played many horrors, I liked outlast 2 so much, but this is just another type of horror, this is real life horror.
Yeah, the horror of child predatory that leads to so much pain & fall out.

It totally is, snow bound hotel, creepy hallways, and matching red carpet?!?!?
Yeah I don't know how hollow didn't notice
1:44 There’s a lot of space left for writing on those papers.
Its weird when you're names Rachel and he keeps saying "Hello, Rachel"
My names Nicole, so yeah I feel ya. Lol
Man!!!! I don’t think I can play this game myself! This is amazingly creepy. The set up and progressions makes it even creepier! More like this please Hollow!!!❤️
I respect you for not putting ads, much love hollow. Great video.
Haven't finished watching it yet but I think the guy who is "helping" her is the one behind it all.
I mean look how he gets all "comfortable" with her and called her Nicky. Then starts getting paranoid later. Telling her not to do this or that.
That's what I was thinking by day 3
1:38:18 Did anyone else notice the wolf's face has changed from his peaceful look to a murderous one?
37:45 haven't watched the whole thing yet, predicting that Irving is a criminal mastermind lol
That's what I think too.. let's see if our bets get far..

For some reason I kept saying to myself it was Irving the whole time from the start he just seemed so off
Yeah me too..There were things he said that didn't make sense..and I sort of picked up on it..very good.
Same
I knew Irving was a weirdo on Christmas when he pretended to say goodbye to his “coworker”
Robin Bee I ain’t catch that part lol
Right?! Like how he hesitated at first when Nicole first called him by his name I was like “idk might not be his name?”
