To make it more "Ultimate" I would add in something like a HamClock, AirTraffic tracking, Other tools and information displays. Security camera. I'm talking full on command center monitoring with live weather images from over head satalites picked up with a dedicated SDR/laptop and a large display. All of it powered off grid and recharged with solar and wind.
What do you do when a local explosion cracks your touch screen or an emp wipes the front end out? Dust off the old Heathkit, find an inverter and grab some car batteries. Antenna? - there will be plent of downed phone lines to salvage.
Nice station and thanks for presenting. BTW - I'm very active on 1296 and it's far from a line of sight band. I've worked stations as far away as Wisconsin from here in Virginia during tropo conditions. Thanks!
For shtf I would go with a portable 100w radio, small battery, folding solar panel, several wire antennas, portable yagi, and a vertical whip. You can get everything done with that and be able to keep it running, as well as being discrete. Towers will become targets.
What you describe would be a great set up for field comms. 100 watts on any kind of battery would kill it rather quickly though. I would personally go with some kind of QRP radio with no more than 20 watts. The tower set up I have really can't be seen for no more than 100 yards. 50 yards in three other directions even with it being 100 foot tall. Besides if some entity is targeting the tower we all have bigger problems to deal with than radio comms.
@@2alphasolutions 100w will get your signal out if needed, its only on transmit. I run on battery all of the time for many hours on a 12ah battery. You can dial down the transmit power for only what is needed. When the bands fill up with people, that extra boost can come in handy.
@@RustyZipper Well the video is titled The Ultimate SHTF radio setup. I proposed a variation that is stealthy, capable, portable and easily obtained. I'm not going to tell you who I'm talking to though.
I really like the 9700. I haven't even begun to use all the features on it. 1296 is a hard band. Not alot of people have it. And it's very much line of sight. I've only made a few contacts on 1296 so far.
It's a feature rich radio indeed. What I did was try different things one at a time with it. Satellite operating is awesome with this compared to the two radio thing.
Be mindful of a gas generator. I had to run one for 48 hours a few weeks back here in Upstate NY and averaged a gal an hour. Thankfully 1/2 the nearest city had power restored and fuel was available. Otherwise I can only last 25-30 hours
Nice job with all the fabrication! Question are you using a winch on the tow truck to lower and raise the tower, and what kind of gear ratio is needed for a lift of 85 feet! Impressive!
Don't skimp on the important stuff. SWRs and gain are definitely your goals but lightning protection and ground systems are most important and shouldn't be neglected
My SHTF Moment would be when my wife is told how much all these toys will cost. Especially when the vast majority of voices that would be heard were of people just as confused as I would be.
Allot of money spent, but little utility management. A more cost effective solution would be a FT991A, ICOM 7100 and an 80 meter loop. All band coverage, 2 digital modes, and all frequency coverage. Mobility, less cost, less shack complexity!
SHTF radio station???? THIS GUY LIVES IN LALA LAND. To keep it real avoid the ham radio lot, they tend to over complicate, and ego driven, things, so, get yourself a 11m SSB radio for about $100-200 MAX and a cheap 1/2wave antenna, there are MUCH more people active on 11meter band (just look at 1om ham band and compere) On 11m you are bound to hear someone and doing so at a minimum cost....... no license needed.
I’ve been an amateur radio operator for 30 years and your statement is Absolutely False. Electronics are Complicated and can be Dangerous that’s why a License is required. Hams have many different frequency allocations for contacting other operators both DX and Local. Get your facts straight! If money was no issue I would buy multiple high end radios and tower as well. This guy Has invested his own money into a back up system for emergency communications. If that bothers you, I think you’re the problem not him.. DE AA2YG
@@jeffreyverry8467 Agree to disagree , there is nothing complicated with a 27mhz ssb radio, and on a good note IT WORKS. You wrote " your statement is Absolutely False " so sure lol than must be a ham, thank you for making my point stronger. Ham radio is a great hobby the people and their ego lets it down over and over again. 10-4
@@che59vYou saying there is no ego in 11 meter or that’s it’s not also a hobby? There are minimalist on both sides and there are people that invest thousands in both. And no I’m not licensed. I strictly use 11 meter. 881 South Texas.
Your tower is brilliant! Beautiful station.😂
Thanks!!
All it takes is money. If that wasn’t a barrier, we would all have a room full of technology!
Time is essential as well and typically need them both to line up
Now that is about the most impressive thing I have seen a ham do! Glad you had the lowering and raising in there.
This is a very cool setup. The mast stays rock solid when you tilt it over with your tow truck. Very good contruction sir! Best 73 from Nik OE3SZE
The mast is a 3 inch od aluminum sleeved with a steel pipe on the inside. It's definitely solid and very heavy
What an awesome set up and that music tho......outstanding lol
Really nice set-up brother.

Good Pepper set up. Many thanks and regards from the UK.
I dig it. Thanks for the ideas. I am only just starting out building my setup.

I'm in virginia as well. Shoot me an email and maybe we can work on 1296 or another band. My email is in the about section of my channel
MURS, GMRS, Meshtastic for texting, WX Station/Radio, CB w/foot warmer, Solar backup power?
Really good stuff, dude! I think the narrator actually did a great job. Spice up the next video with some chitchat with someone over seas!

Best collection..... I can feel romance of analog radio. Have a good Rx Tx
I seem to recall the song. Protectors of the earth? Victory? {cheats and checks the description] Heart of Courage. Yup. That's it.
I've had a 9700 for a few years now. Fun radio. I built a loop yagi for 1296 but haven't found anyone to talk to.

Badass brother. Excellent video.
Sweet room 😮 love it👍
Are there any backup power since it's the Ultimate SHTF radio station?
Have a whole house generator for now. Other sources coming in the future

Can you rotate them individually?
No. The entire mast rotates and the antennas are all mounted to the same vertical mast.

Yes, using the winch on the tow truck toneaise and lower. Not sure of the gear ratio but it is a 10,000 pound hydraulic winch.
Good stuff!
I didnt notice (and you didnt say) any Lightning Protection on the entry panel into radio room. Were there any and I just didnt see them?

drop the antenna down when lightning is near?
Dannng what a antenna system 😮
It's not done yet. I'm adding more in the spring and stacking some of them
You tellin' me all this time I could've been doing that?? He he... ain't no way. #welldonesir
Holy crap man. Awesome!
I was wondering if you are active on 220 (1.25 meters)?
Not yet. I'm actually looking for a ic-375A to be able to have all modes for 220. Anything newer is just FM only from what I can tell.
@@2alphasolutionscan't the 991A tx 220MHz after mars modification ? or maybe the 9700

Collins S-line maybe? Or Drake. He does have a nice Heathkit linear amp!
